I hired the chateu for a family holiday consisting on eleven persons; we had an enjoyable week, more due to the company, weather and beauty of that part of France. Unfortunately the property itself was a little disappointing and in desperate need of some TLC, whilst I did expect a shabby chic interior, I did not expect a run down, badly equipped, full of hidden dangers. Most of the chairs in the garden, dinning room and kitchen where in need of repair and unusable. The Bed in the master bedroom where my parents slept was broken, and twice in one week the bed collapse hurting my Mums back. There where damp and flaking patches in the ceiling on the top floor, and the bathroom was full on mildew on that floor. Cupboards in various bedrooms and the dining room were broken and if you attempted too open them they fell off. There where only 3 sun loungers in the garden with no other comfortable furniture supplied. The covers for the sun lounger had seen better days. There where weeds round the edge of the pool and the outside space front and back had not been maintained. The table in the garden was flaking with paint. In the kitchen whilst there is the most beautiful agar, in the hot summer months this is not on, leaving only a small cooker stuck in a walk way making it really difficult to cook for a large group, also the size of the fridge was inadequate for a property of that size such a distance from provisions. The whole house was dusty and dirty with damp and cobwebs everywhere. Numerous broken windows not repaired extremely dangerous for little hands, one whole room on the top floor was left in an undecorated state with tools and access to the loft (very dangerous if you have adventurous children). We never located the bread shop 200 yards, the property is located is a small sleepy village and the nearest facilities are a 10 minute drive, whilst this was not an issue the property description to amenities is incorrect. In general the whole property could do with some basic DIY and a few improvements. Better layout in the utility area to the side on the kitchen that contains the fridge and dishwasher, a few work surfaces in there would be helpful, better cooking facilities in the summer months, with a larger fridge.Due to the difficulty in preparing meals for eleven person on the small cooker we opted for barbeques, but unfortunately there was no lighting supplied in the garden or round the pool making it unsafe for children and difficult to cook.
Merci. You were lovely guests.
50 minutes to skiing and mountain walks. 50 minutes to the Mediterranean. We are in the middle of Cathar country with all the history of the castles, mystery of the Da Vinci code and of course Carcassonne. Canal du Midi is only a few minutes away at Bram.
Carcassonne has multiple bargain flights from UK. See Ryanair. Toulouse (50 minutes) is an international airport with low cost as well as maor carriers. Beziers has flights to UK plus other european destinations. There are further airports at Perpignan, Montpelier and Girona. Train to Carcassonne from Paris.
Edge of village 200 yards for bread. Carcassonne 20k. Toulouse 65k. Canal du Midi 10 minutes. Mirepoix 25k. Limoux 18k. Surrounded by wineries and markets.
Lovely restaurants in Castelnaudary, home of cassoulet! Supermarkets 5 minutes, bank 8 minutes. Great countryside for walking.
