Converted Barn for 6 to 12 guests, comfortable and generous, glorious views
Our 55 acre estate is a haven of exceptional peace and tranquility 1000 feet up into the rolling foothills of the Pyrenees. We offer generous and comfortable accommodation and a luxurious sense of space and calm.
The Barn has a huge living room, lovely stone dining room, big well-equipped kitchen, and 6 en suite bedrooms. You can eat, rest, and play in the sheltered courtyard, or the big terrace with open views over our wheat and sunflowers and the rolling countryside. You will have exclusive use of the heated pool and all the gardens, orchards, and grounds of the estate. Large areas are left undisturbed as a haven for wildflower, bird, and other wildlife. We can arrange a variety of services, and we will talk you through the huge range of things to do and see in this beautiful region.
At the end of the drive you arrive at our open courtyard, built in the local golden stone. The Barn fills two sides of the courtyard. Double doors lead to a huge living room of 170 sq m, with big sofas and rug in front of the open fireplace and a second sitting area at the library end, near the pool table. More double doors and picture windows open on to the large terrace, set up for summer dining, which has lovely views over our own fields and the rolling hills and valleys of the area. There is a separate stone dining room with a second open fireplace. The wonderful and well equipped kitchen has oak work tops, a large gas hob with two electric ovens, two dishwashers, an American style fridge/freezer, and double sinks. Upstairs are 6 en suite bedrooms, simple but comfortable, most with king size beds. They look out either onto the courtyard or the fields, and rise up about 4 metres to the exposed beams of the Barn. We provide good quality linen and towels for everyone. The whole place combines our own more modern style with the best of French tradition - old floor tiles, stone wall, and lots of exposed timbers.
Outside, you will have exclusive use of our 11 x 5 m solar heated pool, which is in its own walled garden, and all the gardens and grounds of the Domaine. We can also offer additional housekeeping, and extra services like massages for a fully pampered experience. More photos and reviews are on the owners web site.
There are exceptional views of the Pyrenees from our land, as well as our local 12th Century village. You can walk all day straight from the door, through the gentle hills and oak woods, and will rarely meet another person. Sweet Mirepoix, 15 minutes away, is one the most beautiful and complete early medieval market towns in France and where we go for shopping and eating out.
There is a vast range of sites and activities within easy reach in every direction. South are the Pyrenees, the Cather Castles, the ancient cave paintings of the Ariege region, and lakes and wildlife parks. East is Carcassonne, perhaps the finest medieval citadel in Europe, and beyond that hot hills of the wine land of the Corbiere and Roussillon, and of course the Mediterranean. North are the Montagne Noir, the Canal du Midi, and famous abbeys and churches. West is Toulouse, an ancient and sophisticated city. And everywhere there are the glorious views, ancient old market towns and villages, open countryside, and peace.

Janie is a coach and facilitator for individuals and organisations across the world. John was a senior public servant and consultant with academic and international experience. We are interested in people, books, music, history, society, and the world around us. Le Puget is our way of expressing our love of France and the countryside, good food and living, and our pleasure in offering hospitality.
janie purchased this Barn in 2008
Why janie chose Arrondissement of Carcassonne
This is an area of great tranquility and beauty, but easy to get to and with easy access to the sea, cities, and the rest of France. We love the warmth of the people and the warmth of the weather, the quiet roads and pretty market towns, and the spectacular sights of the Pyrenees mountains like the Cathar Castles, the caves and rivers, the Canal du Midi, elegant cities like Toulouse and Narbonne, the vast range of Languedoc wines, and Andorra. We also like to walk for miles from our door through the rolling fields and oak woods that surround us.
What makes this Barn unique
Le Puget used to be a well known and very popular country restaurant, known for many miles around for its charm. Its played an important part in many people's lives, as a venue for parties and celebrations over the years. We enjoy that history, and want our guests to feel the same sense of peace and relaxation - and pleasure - that many people have found here over the years.

Lovely large rustic property with all mod cons for a great 'get away from it all' for a large group
We stayed at this really lovely property with our family including our four grandsons who absolutely loved it. They were able to run around the large grounds, play and swim in the pool, play table tennis, pool, chess and other games provided. They also went fishing in the lake and caught quite a number of fish!
The house is very well equipped and had everything we needed.
We visited the near by town of Mirepoix on Market day. It is a delightful town with good shops and restaurants and the market was excellent.
John and Janie were very friendly, helpful hosts.
Full of French Character and Charm
Le Puget offers guests a completely authentic experience of rural France in an elegant auberge full of character and charm. If you are looking for a restful and restorative holiday, this is the place for you. The accommodation was perfect for our party of 8 with oodles of space to relax, read and enjoy french cuisine as well as having the french countryside with fabulous walks on the doorstep. Ours Hosts Janie and John could not have been more hospitable and helpful including hosting a sumptuous evening meal for us on arrival in front of a roaring fire in fabulous dining room making it a memorable start to our holiday. Highly recommended.
Just like the photos
Sometimes photos on these types of websites can be deceptive; but these show le Puget as it really is - a lovely old auberge, carefully renovated by Janie and John and full of character and interest (le Puget and them!).
You can wander down to the lake or go for longer walks in the beautiful countryside around, with medieval towns nearby to explore and wonderful local vineyards.
Janie and John are excellent hosts - friendly, kind and knowledgable, as well as being great cooks and wine experts! Definitely to be recommended!!
Living the good life
The perfect getaway - spacious, comfortable, and with the loveliest hosts in John & Janie who make sure you have the best time. We were part of a group and ate every night in a different place - from the wonderful courtyard shaded by an ancient olive tree to the dining room with its fabulous fireplace. The pool was terrific and welcome after a 'busy' morning at the local market. Lovely walks from the house itself and so easy to drive to the nearby treasures of Mirepoix and Carcassonne. Reluctant to leave my comfy bed and the sheer tranquillity of the place. Highly recommended.
The perfect place for a rural French holiday
The charm and beauty of this rural setting is reminiscent of a French film at their best. You can imagine Manon des Sources offering you the sweetest figs straight from the tree. Isabelle Huppert could be discussing Existentialism with you over the petit déjeuneur on the garden table overlooking the valley before the nearby medieval village. Better still, you could dream of frolicking dans la piscine with Alain Delon (or Romy Schneider/Jane Birking if you are so inclined). We were there as a gay couple part of a large mixed group. Janie and John captivated all of us with their charm, amazing food and deep understanding of the local culture and of what we tourists wanted from a French holiday. Highly recommended.
An inspiring place to stay
I've been to Le Puget twice now with a group of friends, and intend to keep coming back! It's an inspiring place to stay - the sense of space is fantastic, with the wonderful large dining and lounging spaces (perfect for groups) and the glorious views over rolling countryside. Walking to the nearby village and driving around offers a taste of the real France, but on cooler days, it was hard to drag ourselves away from the roaring log fires and massive sofas. Janie and John are amazing hosts - friendly, warm, knowledgeable and interesting, but never intrusive. There is a sense of generosity about this place which is very special. The bedrooms are simple and it's great to have your own ensuite in such an historic building. Each time I've been, I feel re-energised!
There is a huge range of things to see and do within an hour or less in every direction. Magnificent Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi are two World Heritage sites, both close to us. To the south are the Pyrenees for walking and climbing, the Cathar Castles, lovely Abbeys and churches, and great caves and lakes. Closer still there are local beauty spots, lakes, and rivers for swimming, boating, kayaking, horse-riding, and fishing all within 30 minutes drive. The cities of Toulouse, Beziers and Narbonne and all easily reachable, and the long beaches and coastal fishing towns of the Mediterranean start just over an hour's drive away. And of course there are beautiful medieval villages and towns all around, many with their own markets. Travel: Toulouse airport is about an hour away, Carcassonne (Ryanair) about 30 minutes and Montpellier or Perpignan within two hours. There are major TGV stations at Toulouse and Bezier, both within an hour and a station at Castelnaudary about 20 minutes away. Car hire is recommended as there is no rural public transport other than taxis. Distances: Shops and restaurants start at Fanjeaux, about 10 minutes drive, and at Mirepoix, 15 mins, which is one of the most lovely small market towns in France. Further Details: More information on our website.
