We had a great stay at nil desperandum . The cottage is charming and the village is very quiet, with great walks. Enjoyed the food at the bell and the eels foot. We will be back!
Nice cottage in lovely village
Lovely old cottage complete with beams, log burner and sloping floor! Very steep stairs up to the upstairs bedroom - part of the character of the place but beware if you are not so steady on your feet. All clean and reasonably well looked after. Well equipped kitchen.
Very quiet location. Nice pub with good beer and decent food 5 mins walk away in the village, and farm shop out on the main road - 10 min walk - does a nice breakfast.
30 minute walk takes you to the Eels Foot Inn - definitely recommended. Outdoor wood fired pizza oven on summer days, indoor food all year round. Minsmere is a similar distance or short drive to Southwold, Walberswick etc etc.
Visibility for getting out of the drive is terrible - but the road is very lightly trafficked.
Bring a couple of toilet rolls - only one supplied in the bathroom, and we had to make a special trip out to buy some. Enough wood and kindling supplied for one evening - you have to buy more from a garage or shop if you want the fire on each evening. Both felt a bit 'tight' considering the price paid for the stay.
Thank you for your comments , We do hope you enjoyed your stay and were able to enjoy the complimentary bottle of wine. I am sorry you were disappointed with the provisions we left we will certainly look into this.

Lovely cottage in quiet village.
Enjoyed our few days in the cottage, very cosy and comfortable. Great position for visiting Aldeburgh, Thorpeness, Snape Maltings, all within a few miles. We would have appreciated a few basics in the kitchen, kitchen towel in particular, perhaps some oil and condiments which have been available in other properties we have stayed in. But overall a lovely property.
So glad you enjoyed your stay and hope that you found the bottle of wine and sachets of sauces , sugars and seasonings that we leave.
It’s difficult to leave oils as people have so many dietary requirements these days.
Best wishes Julia
described accurately and welcoming on arrival.
very enjoyable. Good accommodation ideally situated to explore the area, most of which was new to us
Charming Characterful Comfortable Cosy Cottage
We had a lovely stay at 2-Nil Desperandum, the cottage had everything we needed and was very convenient for getting to shops/pubs/the beach! A particular highlight was a trip to the Electric Palace Cinema in Southwold. I would highly recommend this cottage, Julia (the owner) and her family clearly work hard to maintain the homely aesthetic, and their efforts do not go a miss! It's a shame we couldn't stay longer, but we'll be back for sure.
Chloe thank you. We try to make our cottages as homely as possible and I'm glad that this was evident during your stay.
Look forward to welcoming you again.
Stop, you've found the perfect cottage.
I felt the need to post a review as I'm not sure how anyone could fail to give five stars to this little place. We've stayed in many holiday cottages and actually own one ourselves, and Nil Desperandum really wowed us.
The cottage itself is very pretty: lots of exposed ancient timbers and character by the bucketload. Tastefully and comfortably decorated, good bathrooms and kitchen, everything very clean and of genuinely high quality.
As the owner says in the helpful welcome folder, she has tried to think of everything to make for a comfortable stay. There's even a picnic basket to take out for the day. Lots of nice touches.
Yes, the stairs are very steep and unsuitable for those with poor mobility, but this is what you get with a character cottage, and there is a lovely twin bedroom with en-suite on the ground floor.
We found the garden to be both lovely and totally secure for our large rescue greyhound - the previous reviewer's dog must be a real escape artist!
The landlord at the local is a fun character. I suppose this could be read as 'over familiar' if that's your inclination. He made us chuckle.
The cottage is perfectly located for the Suffolk coast - not too far from either Southwold or Aldeburgh, both of which are delightful. Fabulous walking country, and just next to Minsmere reserve, lots of pretty villages around. Dunwich beach and The Ship Inn were my favourite places in the locality - long pebble beach with big waves, and a traditional pub with fab food and ales to retire back.
If we were going back to the Suffolk coast I wouldn't hesitate to stay at Nil Desperandum again.
We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay at our cottage and found the delights that Suffolk can offer .
Nil Desperandum is very special to us and hope that we may welcome you and other visitors again
