The Lodge

Recently decorated, The Lodge is a wooden chalet with 2 bedrooms (kingsize and twin plus camp bed and cot for extra children) and 2 bathrooms. WiFi, Free Sat, ipod dock, DVD, Washingmachine, Dishwasher and local information. Downstairs there is a fully equipped kitchen/dining area including Dishwasher and microwave. There is also a dining table and chairs to seat 6. There is a large living area with comfy sofas and a play area with toy box. There is a large downstairs bathroom with Washing machine, w/c, wash basin and bath with shower over. Upstairs there is also an area with extra hanging space and room for a cot. Outside there is a covered veranda with BBQ overlooking the large private garden with a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and private parking. The village playground with zip wire is opposite the property. The Lodge is set in a peaceful location on the edge of the village only a few minutes walk to pubs, restaurants and Clearwell Castle. Bike storage available.

About the property


We have two rental properties - The Lodge (sleeps maximum of four adults, one child and one baby) and Hawthorn Cottage (sleeps maximum of three in one bedroom). Both properties were redecorated spring 2017.

Both properties are self catering with WiFi, fully fitted kitchens, bathrooms, sitting rooms and outdoor verandas and details of local attractions and restaurants are provided. The wooden Lodge has Washing Machine and Dishwasher. It has a double and twin bedroom and two bathrooms. It has its own private driveway and large garden and is very spacious. No pets allowed.

Our other property, Hawthorn Cottage (sleeps maximum of three in one bedroom) is an open plan converted barn with cosy wood burner and an upstairs gallery with a double and single bed and shower room. Parking. Outside private garden by the stream. 1 pet is welcome in Hawthorn Cottage staying in the large porch.

The village of Clearwell lies within an area of outstanding natural beauty and there are 2 public houses, 2 restaurants, a café at the Clearwell Caves, Clearwell Castle, the church of St. Peter, Puzzle Wood and Perrygrove Railway. All well worth a visit!

Linen and Towels are provided. Check in 4pm/Check out 11am. No smoking. 1 pet in Hawthorn Cottage only.

Washing Machine and Dishwasher in the Lodge only.

Clearwell sits in an attractive valley adjacent to the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the edge of the Royal Forest of Dean. The market town of Coleford is only 1.5 mile away where you find all local amenities. We look forward to your visit!!

Situated in the picturesque village of Clearwell, Stank Farm dates back to circa 1700. It is now home to Andrew and Louise Salter and their two children Will, aged 15 and Lily, aged 11 and numerous sheep, pigs, cattle, rabbits, cats, chickens and doves.

Special interest holidays:

Ideally located close to the stunning Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean both properties are the ideal base for walking the famous Offa's Dyke footpath and there are numerous other walks available whatever your fitness! The Black Mountains of Wales are approximately 40 mins away and the beautiful scenery of Wales is even closer where you may even spot a Red Kite. There a numerous stables offering pony trekking across the Black Mountains.

The Forest of Dean boasts a host of wildlife from beautiful deer to the infamous boar. Horse riding is also available locally. Symonds Yat is approximately 15 mins away where Peregrine Falcons are known to nest. The RSPB volunteer will help you spot one and many of other birds. Canoeing and water sports activities are available at Symonds Yat and the Wye Valley Adventure Centre 20 mins away.

A perfect base for exploring many local castles and forts such as Goodrich and Chepstow Castles. We are also only 15 mins from the dramatic Tintern Abbey.


Wales' beautiful Gower Coast with stunning sandy beaches and coastal walks is just 1.5 hours drive away. Weston-Super Mare is just 45 mins away if you fancy a traditional English seaside with fish and chips and amusement arcades.


Bristol Airport and Cardiff Airport and both approximately an hour's drive. Chepstow National Express coach station has regular services throughout the UK and is just 15 mins away, great if you are on a cycling holiday. We are approximately 10 miles from the M4, M5 and M50 by car.


Stank Farm is within the Village of Clearwell. Coleford is a market town only 1.5 miles away. Monmouth and Chepstow, are both beautiful old market towns only 15 minutes away. Gloucester, Cardiff and Bristol are about 40 mins away.

Coleford has all the convenience shopping you need including restaurants, supermarkets, banks, leisure facilities, cinema, library. Each cottage has an extensive information pack on places of interest for walkers, cyclists, golfers, children or "relaxers".

Booking can be made via email or telephone. A 30% deposit is required to confirm booking by bank transfer. Final payment due 8 weeks before stay. Minimum stay 2 nights. Except at peak season when minimum one week.

Discount for returning guests of 10% of repeat booking.

Changeover Day:
Arrival time is 4pm and departure time is 10am. We are flexible as to the time and day of arrival. Please contact the owner to discuss your requirements.

Notes on accommodation: The Lodge is a great place for a family with lots of outside space. The village recreation ground is opposite with kids play area including zip wire. Hawthorn Cottage (our other property which sleeps three in one bedroom) is cosy and romantic, and also ideal for a couple with a young child. There is a wood burner with all logs provided. Both properties are private and peaceful. Outside: Stank Farm has 22 acres of pasture land with cows and sheep grazing. There is direct access to countryside walks with a public footpath on the property. Both properties have private outdoor space with table and chairs and parking. Both properties sit within the Royal Forest of Dean area of outstanding natural beauty. There are many activities for tourists in the area visit

Stunning property

2 Adults staying at the cottage for 2 nights.

Cottage was beautifully furnished and well equipped with everything that we needed for a cosy, comfy short break.

Garden & surrounding areas were stunning & lots of places to visit locally.

Nothing could be changed to make this any better

Loved the property!! Perfect setting. Well fitted out. Perfectly located for attractions.

We loved the property. Good size, and nicely fitted out. Added bonus having a playground across the road which the kids loved. Owners were very friendly and helpful. The location was perfect. Nice pub in the village. Everything was good. We plan to be back next year.

We absolutely loved our stay in this lodge on Stank Farm!!!

Two adults & two teenagers spent three nights at this wonderful lodge on Stank Farm. All four of us absolutely loved it! The lodge itself was so clean, tidy and well equipped/presented, that it outreached our expectations, and situated on Stank Farm was the perfect setting! The kids loved the freedom to look around the farm, and bikes were available for us to take out. We were a bit worried about keeping two teenagers entertained but the area offered so much too. For us the Llama trekking, deep level caving, and segway experiences were the best. Some fantastic places to eat in the local village also. No local shop though so make sure you stock up on your way. All four of us came away having thoroughly enjoyed our stay & were sad to leave. We would highly recommend this lodge & have already done so to friends!

shame about the lack of interest

Lovely location, nice rental. Unfortunately, because the heating system was on a timer. This meant that on our arrival, the heating didn't kick in until 4pm,took at least another hour for the place to warm up. Came back from a trip out for the day, again had to wait for the timered heat to kick in. Contacted the owner to say that this wasn't working for us in terms of when the heating came on. Only to be told " we're out on a walk at the moment, followed by instructions on how to make sure that the heating would come on. This was the only offer of help that we received. There was no follow up call or knock on the door to see if we were OK. Went home a day early as 3 of our party felt ill due to being cold. The attitude from the owners was disinterested to say the least.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry you did not feel the response from the owners was good enough. Normally they give access to the heating timer control so you can override the system at any time. It was a great shame that you left early without letting anyone know. We have not had this complaint before. Again we apologise for this unfortunate situation.
