About the property

Cottage in Hope Cove, Nr. Kingsbridge / Salcombe, Devon. right next to the beach

Step inside to the cosy and charming beamed sitting room with its stunning sea views and comfortable sofa. Some of the beams are said to have come from ships sunk from the Spanish Armada. A dining table seats four with and extra 2 or 3 able to sit on the window seat if needed. There's a multi fuel stove to give extra warmth in the winter (burns wood or smokeless fuel) and storage heaters provide background heat. We have a great music system, selection of CDs, games cupboard and stocked bookshelves. The well equipped kitchen includes coffee cafetiere, microwave, fridge/ freezer and dishwasher. There will usually be basics like washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets and tea bags supplied. The washing machine and tumble dryer are in a separate room. In the downstairs bathroom is a shower over the bath, heated shaving mirror, heated towel rail and separate toilet. Great water pressure for the shower. The garden looks directly over Mouthwell Beach and out into the bay towards Burgh Island, table/ seating for 6 is provided. Up a steep staircase with handrail and ropes to help you, are the 2 bedrooms, one double room with a standard double bed, sea views and sloping ceilings. The other is a small cabin-style room with 2'6" bunks - more suitable for children than adults and another sea view from this window. Mind your head - ceilings are low throughout the cottage! And just to add, if you are over 6' or 1m96, you will definitely have to stoop and be extra careful not to bang your head.

Outside the garden looks directly over the beach, in summer there is a garden table and seating for 6 as well as sun loungers.

Weekend breaks are available: £190 for 2 nights and £230 for 3 nights which includes bed linen. Pets are not accepted. This is a low tech zone - no TV and very poor mobile signal but we do now offer wifi- enjoy!

About Melanie Ashton

I live in France with my husband and 3 young boys, we decided to move here in 2002 to satisfy our love of the mountains. We also love the sea and I need regular visits for my ocean "fix"!

Why Melanie Ashton chose South Hams

The Cabin has been in my family for 4 generations and is a very special place for all of us. During summers we occupy wooden chalets on the cliff above the cottage and can offer a variety of catered options from birthday teas to dinner, arrange for your fridge to be filled or flowers. As it is so close to the sea, maintenance and improvement are ongoing - we have been modernising the cottage using traditional materials. During the rest of the year we are based in France between Annecy and Chambery. We offer cycle tours in Spring and Autumn and family skiing breaks in the winter with local resorts only 20 minutes away. Please see the website for more info and feel free to contact me with any special requests.

What makes this cottage unique

The uninterrupted sea views are ever changing and the sunsets stunning, whatever the weather, there's always something to enjoy. The history of the cottage, it's gorgeous snug feel and thatched roof and just the fact that its so pretty as well as being my home make it an incredibly special place.

The Cabin is right next to beautiful sandy Mouthwell beach - energetic children often jump off the garden wall onto the sand! It is less than a minute's walk to Boat Beach in Hope Cove for anyone bringing a boat. Along the coast are numerous other beaches - accessible by foot, boat or by driving. The South West coast path passes the front door giving access to miles of fabulous footpaths.

The nearest major airport is Bristol - approximately 2 hours drive and a car is essential. There is also the channel port of Plymouth which is about half an hour by car. Exeter airport is 1 hour away.

Nearby is the market town of Kingsbridge (approx 5 miles) and the seaside resort of Salcombe is a similar distance. Plymouth is approximately a 30 minute drive. Totnes with its interesting shops and mainline station is 30 minutes away and then you have Torbay, Dartmouth and many other places of interest within easy drive.

Further Details:

The Hope Cove post office is an extremely useful local shop just a few steps from the front door. You can get freshly baked croissants and bread if you are quick in the morning and a wonderful selection of locally grown veg. Adrian can fulfil most seaside needs. Kingsbridge has an excellent tourist information office along with great fishmonger, local shops and a reasonable size supermarket. There are plenty of pubs and restaurants situated throughout the area and lots of shopping opportunities in Salcombe. There are banks in both Kingsbridge and Salcombe and a very useful Co-op shop attached to Marlborough garage - just a couple of miles up the lane. The beaches at Hope provide endless rock pooling, sand castle and stream daming and during the summer are very popular. The famous Hope Cove weekend which takes place over the August bank holiday is incredibly popular with families. Outside the holiday periods the village is more tranquil and an excellent base for coastal walking. The cottage is constructed with very thick walls so remains peaceful whatever the time of year.
