Our much-loved little townhouse is perfect for couples looking to spend quality time away together in romantic and comfortable surroundings. This is our own second home which dates back to 1624 and has been sympathetically renovated to retain its original features and character. You'll find many personal touches and real personality here, which we hope will help you to quickly relax, kick off your shoes and feel completely 'at home'.
You'll be in a great location - situated just off the main shopping street in the historic and vibrant Bastide Saint Louis. Ideally placed for exploring, with the medieval city (la Cite), Place Carnot, Canal du Midi, the River Aude, the train station and shops all within walking distance.
There's lots to see and do but it's good to know that at the end of the day, you can relax on our sunny terrace with a glass of wine and continue to soak up the atmosphere of this charming French town.
Simon and I are lucky enough to be balancing two adventures - our new home and renovation project on the stunningly beautiful Isle of Wight and our second home in Carcassonne in the South of France, which captured our hearts during a summer holiday there years ago.
We're now able to welcome couples to stay in our newly available Garden Apartment here in Ventnor (OD E13567) and of course continue to visit our little house in beautiful Carcassonne (OD FR5911).
Shelley Andrews purchased this house in 2008
We love the fact that we can load up our backpacks in the morning and after a short flight, be relaxing on our sunny terrace in the afternoon! The airport shuttle bus is almost door to door for us and our spirits always lift as we cross the bridge over the Canal du Midi and walk into the Bastide. We never tire of exploring the area and seem to find something new with each visit. I tour each of the Brocante shops looking for bits for the house but always find time to visit our nearest 'beach' - just 10 minutes away at the peaceful Lac du Cavayere, or we drive down to the sun-soaked beaches around Narbonne. Carcassonne is surrounded by vineyards as well as remnants from its Cathar past so there's plenty to explore!
We've renovated the house as a home rather than a typical rental property so there's lots of charming features that you may not find in other accommodation. The king-size bed has a luxury mattress and Egyptian cotton linens. There's a roll-top bath in the en-suite bathroom in addition to the large walk-in shower and fluffy towels - we even provide you with bathrobes to lighten your luggage. The spacious living area has lots of books and games as well as a flat screen TV to watch DVDs on, DVD player and CD/iPod docking port. There's a terrace to enjoy that glass of wine or simply look down and watch the people go about their day to day business in this delightful French town.
Ryanair flies straight to Carcassonne and if you just bring hand luggage, you can keep the costs really low!
"We loved your house. The location was superb, more than that it was the cosiest haven one could imagine; decorated with taste, flair and practical style. We had a wonderful time and used your excellent facilities (wanted for nothing) cooking, reading and relaxing. You've done such a great job on this place - keep on doing what you're doing."
"Too many special memories to recount, but thank you for allowing us to share your special home and making our visit inspirational. Thanks also for all your helpful advice pre our arrival! Enjoyed and savoured every minute of our nine days!"
"Fantastic townhouse in a perfect location. We couldn't think of a better place to spend our honeymoon. Thank you for making it so special."
"We felt the warmth of your hospitality right from the moment we booked and that just continued. The house is a real credit to you and a perfect home from home."
"We would love to return! Happy memories of our first wedding anniversary in Carcassonne."
Beautiful house with everything you could possibly need in a really interesting city. Carcassonne is perfect for a couples' trip - so much to see and do with great places to eat and drink. The house was the perfect base. Returning home in the evening to cook dinner in the cosy kitchen diner was always a pleasure and we had the best sleeps in the enormous bed. Only downside is that parking is a bit of a pain.
This homely house in the centre of the Bastide is perfect for a holiday. We stayed 4 days and had a lovely time. The house has everything for a very enjoyable stay. As we travelled with only hand luggage I really appreciated the hairdryer and the towels. The terrace is very welcome to enjoy a glass of wine on at the end of the day. The bed was perfect, plenty of hot water and a great shower. We didn't cook but think all was there that would be needed to cook a meal. Carcassonne was perfect for a break, we cycled along the canal, thoroughly enjoyed a wine tasting day and explored the city. Enough to do but easy and relaxed. Many thanks
We decided to drive to Carcassonne and found the property very easily after following the instructions given to us by Shelley.
Parking outside to unload our luggage was no problem and we then left our car across the road in the residential parking, free, for the whole week.
The little house is decorated beautifully and had everything we required for a perfect holiday.
The roof terrrace was so nice we spent most of our time eating and drinking there.
The proximity to the bars, shopping and restaurants is only a few metres.
We used the small tourist "train" to visit the old part of town and it was very cheap to purchase the tickets.
Beautiful bathroom and very comfortable bed.
We would highly recommend this holiday house to our friends and urge you to give it a try.
Walking around the whole area seemed very safe and at night became lovely and quiet.
My wife and I spent a wonderful week in late August 2016 in Carcassonne. The weather was wonderful, and the temperature was in the mid 30s Celsius each day, I think we saw two clouds the entire time.
The property is excellent. It's centrally located in the town and is very handy for shops, bars and restaurants. The property itself is beautifully styled and furnished and has all the luxuries (and indeed necessities) of home. In fact it was so nice and comfortable, and the produce in the local markets and shops was so good that we ate in most of the nights during our stay (being a frugal Yorkshireman I was very happy with this).
We spent some time up at the castle which is a truly beautiful piece of history, both during the day and at night (it's very beautiful at night). We ventured on foot to the lake (although you can bus it). We also walked routes along the canal and the river (many hire bikes and go that bit further).
The lake was great, there are two beached areas where swimming is allowed and where life guards patrol.
We ended up spending a lot of time in the lido in Carcassonne because it was so handy, and the weather was so good. Fellas - be warned! You need tight/clingy shorts in order to swim at a public baths in France, I had to swallow my pride and buy a pair of cheap speedo style pants, and they took quite some time to track down in the shops in Carcassonne. I'm still trying to delete the photographic evidence that it ever took place.
Shelley - our hostess was wonderful. She kept us up to date and informed at every step of the process - through booking, paying, sending out the key and information about the stay. We had all the information that we needed to make our stay a great experience.
I would not hesitate to recommend Carcassonne to anyone considering a wonderful relaxing holiday, and I would especially recommend this property to anyone who wished to stay in this area.
Thanks to both Shelly and Simon.
Amazing house! Perfect for a couple, with everything you could possibly need. Extremely clean with lovely bedroom and en suite bathroom. Superb information about the area and transport links, where to eat and local supermarkets. We were sent via email all the information on how to get to the house from the airport, which was extremely easy. We had amazing weather for the whole 9 days so no complaints from us!
My wife and I had a great 7 night stay in this old townhouse with roof terrace. The top two floors are spacious and beautifully furnished with lots of nice touches and all you need for a self catering stay - although we ate out once or twice a day. Situated right in the centre of the old town, close to its central square and within 20 minutes easy walking distance of the medieval city and castle, this French town has lots of bars, restaurants and shops nearby. It was great to explore and then return to sit on the roof terrace with a drink and relax. The hosts are very thoughtful and have gone to some lengths to provide information, books, dvds and other comforts for visitors. It was easy to arrive at the airport, walk outside and get on a 15 minute bus ride to town and then walk a for 10 minutes to arrive at the house. Highly recommended.
Ask someone to imagine a French marketplace and they'll probably conjure up images of bright awnings, colourful fruit, vegetables, flowers, breads, cheeses and pates of all description. The thrice weekly market held in Place Carnot, Carcassonne is one of the best we've seen and a true feast for the senses. Relax with a coffee and pastry at Bar Felix and people-watch the morning away!
Place Carnot is a two minute walk from the house and you'll find many great restaurants, shops and facilities here too including banks, chemist, patisseries and chocolatiers. There's also a covered market just a few streets past the square, selling fresh fish, meat and pate. With all of the tempting boulangerie nearby, you'll be spoilt for choice on where to buy your fresh, warm croissants in the mornings!
The Canal du Midi is also just a five minute walk away. You can hire bicycles locally (we have space for you to store them), walk, take a boat along the waterway or just relax on a bench and watch the boats go by. A ten minute stroll in the other direction will bring you alongside the River Aude, cool water perfect for dipping hot feet into! There are lovely walks along this route, including the lesser-known path up to la Cite.
The tranquil Lac du Cavayere is located in the beautiful hills surrounding the town and combines a sandy beach with water sports, walking, tree-based activities (climbing, zip-lines etc) as well as relaxing walks and swimming. You can cycle there, take a bus, drive there in ten minutes or walk there in about an hour and a half.
Carcassonne always seems to have activities organised for its residents and visitors throughout the year, making it a great destination whatever the season. Spring brings Jazz Week, a must for any jazz enthusiast.
In Summer it's the 'Festival of two towns'; a series of musical events featuring pop, rock, opera, dance, theatre, French and international music - many of the performances are free.
The date in everyone's diary is July 14th, when at 10.30pm, the skies above la Cite are set ablaze with an amazing fireworks spectacular lasting over 25 minutes, it's an incredible display and reputed to be one of the best in Europe.
Then, during the last week of August, it's the turn of 'Spanish Week' when shows, events, concerts, dance performances, and gastronomic specialities combine to make a great party atmosphere.
We love Christmas in Carcassonne when the town is transformed into a winter wonderland with ice-skating rink, festive market, big wheel and rides, toboggan run and a fireworks display. You'll find the location of our house very convenient for all of these events and more.
Getting here is easy with Carcassonne's airport less than a ten minute drive from the centre of town. The airport shuttle bus meets each flight (5 Euros per person) and will drop you at the train station (Gare SNCF) - just a few minutes walk from the house. If you fly to Toulouse or Beziers then you can catch a direct train to Carcassonne.
Carcassonne is surrounded by vineyards but you don't have to miss out on wine tasting if you're travelling without a car. You could join one of the excellent local tours we recommend or walk to one of the 'caves' here in town. You will need a car or to join a small tour group if you'd like to visit the Cathar sites such as Montsegur, Lastours, Queribus, Peyrepertuse and Puilaurens,
The beaches along the south coast are a 45 minute drive away. Head to Narbonne and turn right to explore the coastline towards Perpignan and Spain or left towards Montpellier and the Cote d'Azur.
There's so much to do in this beautiful and impressive region and we hope you love it as much as we do.
