Charming townhouse in the heart of Carcassonne - Perfect for couples

Bedrooms 1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 - 7 nights

About the property

Townhouse with terrace in Carcassonne, Languedoc, France - Excellent location, furnished as a 'home from home'

Our much-loved little townhouse is perfect for couples looking to spend quality time away together in romantic and comfortable surroundings. This is our own second home which dates back to 1624 and has been sympathetically renovated to retain its original features and character. You'll find many personal touches and real personality here, which we hope will help you to quickly relax, kick off your shoes and feel completely 'at home'.

You'll be in a great location - situated just off the main shopping street in the historic and vibrant Bastide Saint Louis. Ideally placed for exploring, with the medieval city (la Cite), Place Carnot, Canal du Midi, the River Aude, the train station and shops all within walking distance.

There's lots to see and do but it's good to know that at the end of the day, you can relax on our sunny terrace with a glass of wine and continue to soak up the atmosphere of this charming French town.

About Shelley Andrews

Simon and I are lucky enough to be balancing two adventures - our new home and renovation project on the stunningly beautiful Isle of Wight and our second home in Carcassonne in the South of France, which captured our hearts during a summer holiday there years ago.

We're now able to welcome couples to stay in our newly available Garden Apartment here in Ventnor (OD E13567) and of course continue to visit our little house in beautiful Carcassonne (OD FR5911).

Shelley Andrews purchased this house in 2008

Why Shelley Andrews chose Carcassonne City

We love the fact that we can load up our backpacks in the morning and after a short flight, be relaxing on our sunny terrace in the afternoon! The airport shuttle bus is almost door to door for us and our spirits always lift as we cross the bridge over the Canal du Midi and walk into the Bastide. We never tire of exploring the area and seem to find something new with each visit. I tour each of the Brocante shops looking for bits for the house but always find time to visit our nearest 'beach' - just 10 minutes away at the peaceful Lac du Cavayere, or we drive down to the sun-soaked beaches around Narbonne. Carcassonne is surrounded by vineyards as well as remnants from its Cathar past so there's plenty to explore!

What makes this house unique

We've renovated the house as a home rather than a typical rental property so there's lots of charming features that you may not find in other accommodation. The king-size bed has a luxury mattress and Egyptian cotton linens. There's a roll-top bath in the en-suite bathroom in addition to the large walk-in shower and fluffy towels - we even provide you with bathrobes to lighten your luggage. The spacious living area has lots of books and games as well as a flat screen TV to watch DVDs on, DVD player and CD/iPod docking port. There's a terrace to enjoy that glass of wine or simply look down and watch the people go about their day to day business in this delightful French town.

Ryanair flies straight to Carcassonne and if you just bring hand luggage, you can keep the costs really low!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We loved your house. The location was superb, more than that it was the cosiest haven one could imagine; decorated with taste, flair and practical style. We had a wonderful time and used your excellent facilities (wanted for nothing) cooking, reading and relaxing. You've done such a great job on this place - keep on doing what you're doing."

"Too many special memories to recount, but thank you for allowing us to share your special home and making our visit inspirational. Thanks also for all your helpful advice pre our arrival! Enjoyed and savoured every minute of our nine days!"

"Fantastic townhouse in a perfect location. We couldn't think of a better place to spend our honeymoon. Thank you for making it so special."

"We felt the warmth of your hospitality right from the moment we booked and that just continued. The house is a real credit to you and a perfect home from home."

"We would love to return! Happy memories of our first wedding anniversary in Carcassonne."

This is our 'second home' and we have invested much love and care into the renovation. We specifically rent to other couples who are looking for something with charm and character - a special place in which you can relax and spend time together in comfort. The photographs we display on our advert and website will give you an idea of what the house is like rather than showing you every cupboard and corner. We love to keep some of the details as a surprise for your arrival and always aim to exceed your expectations. If you would like any specific information about the house then of course we are always happy to provide it. And, if you are celebrating a special occasion and would like our help in planning a surprise for your partner then please do get in touch. For safety reasons we do not permit smoking anywhere in the property or on the terrace. As our home is just for couples, we do not accommodate children or pets. We have a sunny, paved terrace accessed from the living area - a rare space to have in the Bastide! Table and chairs are provided for dining / relaxing. There is parking available immediately outside the house - this is metered at certain times of day. There are also some free parking spaces about 5 minutes walk away and we can provide easy directions for finding these if you're not familiar with the area. If you prefer secure underground parking, there are several locations to choose from also within easy walking distance. You're welcome to use our washing machine, iron and ironing board, hairdryer, cool bag, beach mat and umbrella, beach towels, umbrella, shopping bags and basket, torches, sewing kit and UK / EU adapter plugs. The property is cleaned at the end of each stay and this is included in the rental price. High quality bed linen, towels, face cloths, bathrobes, tea towels, napkins etc are all provided and the laundry cost is included in your rental price. We have a large downstairs storage room where you can keep bicycles if you decide to hire them during your stay. This space is also useful for storing heavier cases if you are staying with us as part of a longer trip and have lots of luggage.

Charming townhouse in the heart of Carcassonne - Perfect for couples
average rating of 4.965517 based on 30 reviews

A comfortable home from home in the historic heart of Carcassonne

  • 5 of 5

The property was very easy to find and very convenient for the shops, the railway station and the local attractions. Shelley and Simon have decorated it beautifully and have thought of everything their guests might need to enjoy their stay.

We also found Carcassonne an excellent centre for visiting other places, we particularly enjoyed our day out on the train to Narbonne. Many thanks to Shelley also for the very comprehensive information we received before we left for France.

La Petite Maison was all that the reviews said it would be. Coming from a tiny quiet town, we had some concerns that it would be noisy, but it was very peaceful and quiet. We were very glad to be there from May 15-27, 2017 before the tourist season and the much hotter temps to follow during the summer months. Shelley provided all that was needed, including amenities such as T.P. salt and pepper, garbage bags, Kleenex...things that are often lacking at other gites and VRBOs. Be prepared for the spiral staircase and using electric lights during the day when the shutters are closed against the heat. We loved our stay and recommend it highly. excellent townhouse in the heart of the old city

  • 5 of 5

The townhouse is ideally located five minutes from the railway station in the old city. Bars, restaurants and shops all within a couple,of minutes walk. The house has been tastefully renovated with agenerous size bedroom and lovely bathroom. On the top floor is the kitchen/lounge with a very nice roof terrace. For two people this is an ideal short break. Carcassonne has a lot to offer. The castle is world class, the Saturday market is wonderful, and the canal, midi a delight. Train trips to nearby locations are very straightforward. I would highly recommend this accommodation and the area. We,went for a week and will be returning.

Great house in a wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week in April and loved it. The house is excellent and very well equipped. It is close to the main square in the Bastide and near shops, cafes and supermarkets but the best shopping is the markets - three per week- in the square and in the indoor market hall.

The house is on three floors with the kitchen and seating area at the top - this opens onto a spacious terrace which would be perfect for drinks and meals later in the season (it was warm enough a couple of times for us to have a drink outside).

The owners are very helpful and provide lots of information to help to make your stay a success. Similarly the local manager is easily contacted if the are any questions or issues during the stay.

We would highly recommend it.

A couple of hints for older people - the stairs are steep so if you find stairs difficult this may not be for you. We are both nearly 70 and did manage but with lots of care. We also found the walk to the medieval city rather steep- resolved by getting taxis up there and walking back (worth it because there are a couple of really good restaurants up there as well as the charm of the place).

Magical moments in La Petite Maison in Carcassonne

  • 5 of 5

Despite some initial difficulties due to our late arrival, once we eventually got to La Petite Maison they were quickly forgotten. The photos do not lie. It is a delightful little house, as cosy and romantic as Shelley described it. Although we didn't use it, there is a lovely little terrace.Everything has been carefully thought out to make guests feel comfortable and at home, with an abundance of useful information from places to visit, how to get to them on foot and by other means it transport, as well as restaurant recommendations. The only criticism is no television, not from me, but by husband. However there was a lovely variety of CDs, and you can connect to the Internet to watch online movies, news etc.(Although secretly, I know my husband would have liked the option of television.) it is spotlessly clean and well maintained.

The location is fantastic being right in the middle of Carcassonne. Shopping is practically on the doorstep, and places to visit within easy walking distance. Even parking is not a problem, as it is free from 6.00pm until 9.00am, and you can find places to park for free in the streets a bit further away, although we never needed to.

Car: not necessary

Ask someone to imagine a French marketplace and they'll probably conjure up images of bright awnings, colourful fruit, vegetables, flowers, breads, cheeses and pates of all description. The thrice weekly market held in Place Carnot, Carcassonne is one of the best we've seen and a true feast for the senses. Relax with a coffee and pastry at Bar Felix and people-watch the morning away!

Place Carnot is a two minute walk from the house and you'll find many great restaurants, shops and facilities here too including banks, chemist, patisseries and chocolatiers. There's also a covered market just a few streets past the square, selling fresh fish, meat and pate. With all of the tempting boulangerie nearby, you'll be spoilt for choice on where to buy your fresh, warm croissants in the mornings!

The Canal du Midi is also just a five minute walk away. You can hire bicycles locally (we have space for you to store them), walk, take a boat along the waterway or just relax on a bench and watch the boats go by. A ten minute stroll in the other direction will bring you alongside the River Aude, cool water perfect for dipping hot feet into! There are lovely walks along this route, including the lesser-known path up to la Cite.

The tranquil Lac du Cavayere is located in the beautiful hills surrounding the town and combines a sandy beach with water sports, walking, tree-based activities (climbing, zip-lines etc) as well as relaxing walks and swimming. You can cycle there, take a bus, drive there in ten minutes or walk there in about an hour and a half.

Carcassonne always seems to have activities organised for its residents and visitors throughout the year, making it a great destination whatever the season. Spring brings Jazz Week, a must for any jazz enthusiast.

In Summer it's the 'Festival of two towns'; a series of musical events featuring pop, rock, opera, dance, theatre, French and international music - many of the performances are free.

The date in everyone's diary is July 14th, when at 10.30pm, the skies above la Cite are set ablaze with an amazing fireworks spectacular lasting over 25 minutes, it's an incredible display and reputed to be one of the best in Europe.

Then, during the last week of August, it's the turn of 'Spanish Week' when shows, events, concerts, dance performances, and gastronomic specialities combine to make a great party atmosphere.

We love Christmas in Carcassonne when the town is transformed into a winter wonderland with ice-skating rink, festive market, big wheel and rides, toboggan run and a fireworks display. You'll find the location of our house very convenient for all of these events and more.

Getting here is easy with Carcassonne's airport less than a ten minute drive from the centre of town. The airport shuttle bus meets each flight (5 Euros per person) and will drop you at the train station (Gare SNCF) - just a few minutes walk from the house. If you fly to Toulouse or Beziers then you can catch a direct train to Carcassonne.

Carcassonne is surrounded by vineyards but you don't have to miss out on wine tasting if you're travelling without a car. You could join one of the excellent local tours we recommend or walk to one of the 'caves' here in town. You will need a car or to join a small tour group if you'd like to visit the Cathar sites such as Montsegur, Lastours, Queribus, Peyrepertuse and Puilaurens,

The beaches along the south coast are a 45 minute drive away. Head to Narbonne and turn right to explore the coastline towards Perpignan and Spain or left towards Montpellier and the Cote d'Azur.

There's so much to do in this beautiful and impressive region and we hope you love it as much as we do.
