Set in scenery that will take your breath away, this enchanting ‘get away from it all’ cottage offers superb comfort and style, total peace and quiet, fantastic walking from the door – and fun family attractions within a short drive. Full of comfy sofas, books and games, with a log-burning stove in the farmhouse kitchen and cosy open fire in one of the two sitting rooms, it's all you've ever wanted in a holiday home - and offers excellent value, with everything included in the price.
We're Candy and Andrew Goad - and we're lucky enough to live in the Lake District, waking up every day to the sight of mountains and rushing rivers, and the sounds of skylarks and sheep. I was a creative director in a previous existence and love designing the ultimate holiday cottage - warm, welcoming, stylish - and a real home from home.
Andrew loves doing up old houses and bringing them back to life. So he maintains the properties (and is on call if you need any help!) while I organise the bookings and make sure each of our three cottages is as gorgeous as it can be.
Candy Goad purchased this cottage in 2001
High Ground Cottage was love at first sight. I'd never seen anywhere like this - set amidst wild moorland and the glorious fells, with Britain's highest mountain, Scafell rising before your eyes.
It was owned by an artist before me, and is the perfect retreat for anyone with an artist's soul!
There's something magical about this place - and I've had to promise my two sons that they can still come and stay here sometimes during the year, even though we don't live here any more...
Total peace, the essence of the Lake District all around you, skylarks, wild cloud formations and rainbows, snow on the tops, herdwick sheep grazing in front of your garden - but also some wonderful things to see and do nearby.
It's perfect for grown-ups who need to recharge their batteries and regain their zest for life - and brilliant for kids who will have a great time on the little steam train nearby, the great beaches you can drive to, the owl sanctuary and much more.
Here are a few of the lovely comments we've had about High Ground:
"Fantastic location, beautiful views, superbly presented, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, comfortably fitted us all in, 6 adults 4 children and 2 dogs. Would love to stay again and will definitely be recommending the cottage."
"We had a wonderful time Candy, You have such a beautiful house."
"We had a great time at your cottage in High Ground, its a lovely place."
‘Fantastic location, beautiful views, superbly presented, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here’
We chose High Ground Cottage because it not only looked lovely but was big enough to fit all of us in and would welcome the three dogs!!
It turned out to be the best choice we could have made. Not only is the cottage as beautiful in reality as it is in the pictures it is cosy, comfortable, peaceful and boasts the most amazing views across the fells with only sheep and cows for company. The cottage comes with everything we needed including a wonderfully well stocked library and plenty of board games to suit all ages (in our case fro 7 to 65!). There are lovely walks right outside the cottage door and loads of things to do further afield including some lovely pubs with excellent food and the wonderful La'al Ratty steam train to take you all the way to the coast at Ravenglass.
We had a wonderful week and will, hopefully, return to High Ground in the not too distant future.
Thank you Candy for allowing us to rent your beautiful cottage
Comfortable , clean, well stocked ,stunning views. Perfect
place for a family holiday. Our ages ranged from one year to 82 and there was plenty of space to spread out. Lots of walks from the house and sheep , cows and the occasional hare to re-enforce the holiday feel ! To be highly recommended.
We have just had another fantastic week at high ground cottage. Whilst there in August we booked for may half term. High expectations and rose tinted memories did not disappoint. Four adults, five odd and two dogs all had a brilliant time the house is spacious and comfortable with the most amazing views and setting - good for the soul. Being able to walk out the door and head to the lake and go Stanley they'll waterfall meant we had lots of great days without getting into the car! We will definitely be back. The Carroll's and the White's.
Our stay at Highground cottage was perfect, the location and views are as lovely and inspiring as any in England and you feel as though you are miles from anyone gazing over the green sheep and lamb filled fields to climbing fells and rocky peaks. The house is very well equipped with cooking facilities and surprisingly good internet connection as well as satellite TV. The rooms each have a different character and while our group favored the large kitchen table, we also gathered around a fire in the study and played board games in the lounge. As mountain bikers we explored the surrounding hills and passes mostly from the house but also made a short journey by car to Grizedale for a day of trail riding. The owners were friendly and communicative making booking and getting information a pleasure. Overall a wonderful place to stay that will remain in my memory for a long time to come.
Just a quick note to say thank you for the opportunity to stay at High Ground Cottage. We had a wonderful weekend, and the weather was great. We stopped at the market at Cartmel on the way up, went on the Ratty, picnic'd at Muncaster, ice creams at Seascale, walked to Stanley Ghyll.
The cottage was great. We were a party of 10 - 7 adults, 3 small children, and it had everything we needed. Toys, space, plenty of hot water and a table big enough for all of us to get around. And unbeatable best views.
I went for a week with my husband and our two dogs. It is one of the most beautiful places i have been to. The view from the cottage was beautiful - waking up every morning and looking out of the window was superb and the location is amazing. The garden is a fantastic size and so peaceful - you just look onto the beautiful landscape. There are so many local walks and pubs close by as well. scafell pike is a short drive away. The cottage is lovely and modern. I loved the kitchen it was so homely. It was so peaceful. I can not describe in words how amazing this cottage and location are. We will definitley be back ! miss it already x
You are in a very special place here - it's just a half hour's drive to some of England's most beautiful beaches at Silecroft and St Bees (which has a great beach cafe). Vast and sandy, these unspoilt beaches have the mountains as a backdrop.
The nearest airport is Manchester or Liverpool, both about 2 hours by car. The nearest train station is Ulverston - around 30 minutes by car. Oxenholme-the-Lake-District station is an hour away by car and now has an excellent, fast service.
High Ground Cottage is a five minute drive from the post office and stores in Ulpha and not much more to the general store in Eskdale Green. Broughton-in-Furness is a very attractive and ancient little market town just 7 miles away, with excellent food shops selling the best of local produce, plus a bank, several inns, a post office and cafe/bread and cake shop.
There are some excellent inns serving good food within an easy drive of High Ground - the nearest is three miles away at the foot of the Hardknott Pass. Sit outside and drink in the drama!
For a big shop you can go to Barrow - about 40 minutes away by car - which has a 24 hour Tesco Extra store and an Asda. Or why not order a home food delivery from Tesco?
You are spoilt for things to do, like a trip to the coast on the Eskdale to Ravenglass miniature steam railway, Muncaster Castle with its Owl Sanctuary and gardens, Lake cruises on Ullswater and Coniston, the wildly beautiful Wastwater lake nearby, the Animal Park at Dalton, Motor Museum at Holker Hall - while all the Lake District favourites from Beatrix Potter's Hilltop Farm to Wordsworth's Dove Cottage are all just 45 minutes to an hour away by car. There is also riding, bike hire and canoeing.
