We are in our 60's and consider ourselves semi retired. Our working life in England was split between London and Gloucestershire in the antique jewellery business.
Although our French is pretty basic (some more basic than others) we have many french friends and Susie is a local councillor. We thoroughly enjoyed our first full season and met many charming people who were very kind in their comments about La Petite Grange. We like to keep a low profile but are always on hand if needed.
John Rivers purchased this farmhouse in 1980
We bought the property 25 years ago as the fulfilment of a dream to have a second home in France. The peace, tranquility and pace of life were compelling attractions as was the gentle rolling countryside and soft limestone buildings. When we decided to move to France permanently we embarked on a major building program, upgrading and extending our original holiday home, which is now a four bedroom gite and converting two barns in the grounds to a one bedroom gite and our two bedroom house. This winter we upgraded and extended the sun terrace around the salt water pool and are considering installing solar heating for the pool thereby making swimming from May to November feasible.
A.M. Aug.09 What a blissful place La Vieille Grange is.Early morning swims before the heat of the day gets up; breakfast on the terrace, aperitifs on the swing seat; salad lunches under the giant parasol; an afternoon zizz; and then candlelit dinners under the stars. This is one of the most beautiful gites I have ever stayed in(and I've stayed in some).
F.S. Aug 09 John and Susie, the owners and neighbours, are very welcoming and extremely thoughtful in their approach to letting their beautifully decorated and furnished house. My teenage family had a really good time. I would have no hesitation recommending La Vieille Grange to family and friends.
C.B.Sept 09 A lovely peaceful home with pool. Our family of two adults and three kids really enjoyed our time here. We would recommend this home to all.
S.W July 17 Exceeded expectations in everyway. A superb holiday for all of us ..
K.C. 27/8 What a wonderful place to stay-the best equipped property we have stayed in....
We were 3 generations in 3 cars and this was the first time, other than Christmas, when the whole family could holiday together. The accommodation was perfect for our group ranging from 2 years old to 72. Very clean and nicely presented and by far the best rental kitchen we have ever had. The pool was warm and well maintained and the situation perfect. What a shame we just missed the sunflowers - miles of them reaching right up to our boundary. Eymet is a lovely old town and Bergerac certainly worth a visit. John and Susie are the PERFECT hosts and went the extra mile when we needed some help. We met repeat visitors in the one bedroom gite also on the property - no wonder they keep coming back. If you are looking for peace and quiet in beautiful countryside this is it !
We recently enjoyed our week in Le stang, a peaceful hamlet close to the beautiful town of Eymet. This house had everything in it that you could possibly need; in fact I was able to bake a birthday cake with electric beaters and use the magi max food processor. Not normal items to be found in a holiday home. The owners have thought of everything. The attention to detail in the furnishings is not shown fully in the photographs. In fact this house is even better in reality than in the photographs
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this spacious and comfortable house to explore a beautiful part of the Dordogne.
Waking to birdsong from the beautiful main bedroom was a delight. The whole wall is glass mounted in polished chestnut. Everywhere the standard was so high. Susi has such an eye for detail. Soft colours, exquisite bedding, antiques and fine paintings created the gentle ambiance of this beautiful farmhouse. The sun crept out each afternoon, so sat and read by the pool. In such a short trip visited markets at Bergerac and Emeye. Wine tastings in a chateau and lovely evening meal in Emeye under the arches. I cannot recommend this perfect holiday location enough. Perfect for a large group, although we were lucky enough to be there at a quiet time in early May. The small gite ideal for a couple with a baby or grandparents who may wish to have their family share the holiday in perfect french style. A car essential although Bergerac airport only 20 minutes away as the roads are so quiet.
We had a wonderfully relaxing time in John and Susie's gite The accommodation was spacious, comfortable and well-maintained, and the kitchen was one of the best equipped I have used in 30+ years in gites. John and Susie were ideal hosts-always on hand when required, and attending to minor problems immediately-and supplying us with fruit and vegetables on occasion.
The pool area was superb-clean, attractive and well supplied with loungers and shade.
The area around the gite is our favourite part of France-lovely rolling countryside with many attractive villages for browsing and coffee! There is quite a lot of wildlife around- we saw several groups of deer and a large variety of birdlife. There are local markets every day of the week, and a very good local Carrefour in Eymet nearby.
We planning a possible return next year and would unhesitatingly recommend the gite to friends and relatives
Bergerac airport is a leisurely 25 minutes drive away. The channel port of St.Malo is a 6-7 hour drive.
Our nearest town is Eymet(7kms), an unspoilt 13th Century bastide with numerous fetes, festivals and markets throughout the summer. Bergerac with its charming old town is 24km away. We are ideally placed to visit numerous fascinating places. Our nearest baker is 2kms in Fonroque.
Canoeing on the majestic Dordogne river, Go-Karting, Golf at the beautiful Chateau des Vigiers, Tennis, Horse riding and wine tasting are all within easy reach.
