Merrivale is situated in the south west corner of the South Hams on the Devon/Cornwall border and enjoys uninterrupted panoramic sea views from its superb hill top position in the coastal village of Heybrook Bay within the parish of Wembury, an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB). The location is perfect for couples or family holidays, walking the coastal paths, exploring the nearby beaches or simply relaxing in the garden or on the terraces soaking up the sun and watching the many boats and species of birds.
Merrivale is spacious and modern with most rooms having sea views. Three good sized bedrooms on the ground floor with three bathrooms and master bedroom and bathroom upstairs with balcony and stunning sea views. Each of the bedrooms has a bath/shower room either en-suite or adjacent. There is a large living room with log burner and Sky TV, a spacious well equipped kitchen, which opens into a large dining room with spiral stairs down to the games room. There is a balcony at the front of the dining room and large terrace in front of the lounge overlooking the sea, so that you can relax inside and outside.
Merrivale has gas fired central heating throughout with triple glazing to most of the windows an doors to provide a cosy feel when the south westerlies are blowing.
A lower terrace allows guests to sunbath in peace sheltered from the house.
The games room has a comfy sitting area with pool table, table football and air hockey, as well as a range of board games and jigsaws for all ages. There is another patio in front of the games room with bistro table.
To the east side there is another terrace, which is ideal for enjoying the morning sun with coffee and croissants whilst gazing over to the Mewstone.
There is a washing line, as well as an airer (clothes horse) indoors along with washing machine and tumble drier for guests use.
The internal hall acts as a study area and with WiFi for guests use.
There is ample parking for multiple cars and there is just one step up into the entrance porch from the gravel drive.
I live in Birmingham with my wife Sarah and daughter Hannah, whilst our son Josh is having fun and working hard as a student in London. Our hearts are by the sea, which is why we love Merrivale and the peace of Heybrook Bay.
We get a lot of pleasure knowing that others can enjoy the peace and tranquility that Merrivale offers. The sea air is very therapeutic and blows away the pressures of busy lives.
Richard Lait purchased this bungalow in 2006
We fell in love with the fabulous uninterrupted sea view and peaceful location.
Merrivale is a beautifully spacious home and its location is convenient to explore both Devon and Cornwall with close proximity to the historic Barbican and Plymouth Hoe, as well as Dartmoor National Park.
This is the undiscovered part of the south coast between Salcombe and Looe, so why not come and discover it?
When we are ready for a slower pace of life, this is where we intend to retreat to live.
We enjoy the sea, peace and quiet, whilst being close to fabulous beaches, the rugged wilderness of Dartmoor national park and the city life of Plymouth, with its maritime history.
In the summer months we enjoy walking the coastal path to Wembury and on to Newton Ferrers or Noss Mayo to enjoy a pub lunch overlooking the River Yealm. Just don't miss the last ferry as it is a long walk back!
Sitting on one of the many terraces or balconies watching the boats on a shimmering sea with a cup of tea and a home made scone loaded with jam and clotted cream is a perfect holiday treat.
Of course a glass of chilled wine watching the sunset over Cornwall is another holiday treat to be enjoyed.
What a fantastic house and setting- we have had a great break from London and enjoyed the house and views so much. July 2010
A lovely week! What a fantastic setting and house- all the comforts of home and very well decked out. August 2010
Superb location, lovely house, sunshine, fresh air & clotted cream. Sept 2010
What a fabulous house! Such amazing views. A week is not long enough.... Certainly the most well equipped house we've ever stayed in. February 2011
We are so impressed with your house and the attention to detail you have give it. The view, especially on a sunny day, is fantastic. May 2011
The best place we have stayed in. Wish we lived here! May 2011
Your house is so lovely, the mod cons are excellent, all rooms are beatiful & the views are just breath taking!!! June 2011
We had lots of things planned to do before we came, however just ended up spending most of our time on the deckl! A lovely holiday very relaxing & really enjoyable. July 2011
A fantastic break over new year. The views really are amazing, with stunning sunrises and sunsets. Perfect location for a stroll to the local pubs or a more adventurous trek (the coastal path is at the end of the driveway). A drive away, but the Oyster Shack in Bigbury is a fantastic seafood restaurant. The house is spacious and equipped to the highest standard and the games room is a great way to occupy the children (and parents!) on rainy days.
Wonderful house. Very helpful owner.
Beautiful home , beautiful location - 4th time here and never disappointed ! Every thought has gone into this property from the home made scones on arrival to the fresh flowers and the excellent customer service from the owners. Thank you very much Merrivale for leaving us with lovely holiday memories !
There is only one word to describe Merrivale and its location on Heybrook Bay - STUNNING. When you arrive it just takes your breath away. Every room is beautifully furnished and decorated. Mostly with a nautical/seaside theme, so in keeping. The dining room is just amazing. There is a floor standing telescope in this room and by downloading an app on either mobile or iPad you know exactly the larger vessels coming in or departing from Plymouth. all the bedrooms have either an en suite or an ajacent bathroom. There is a great games room downstairs accessed by a beautifully lit spiral staircase from the dining room. We experienced such brilliant weather we did not spend a lot of time down here, but it is reassuring to know that if you were all confined to the house with bad weather you could pass many happy hours down here. Three table games - table tennis, air hockey and table football and so many games and jigsaws. There are if I remember correctly six TVs throughout the property. The kitchen is beautifully appointed which is so well equipped with everything you could ever need. The property is so fresh and beautifully clean, looked after by Sue. We were greeted by fresh scones, clotted cream and jam. Butter, milk, flowers and wine. Very much appreciated after our near 300 mile journey. We organised a delivery from Waitrose to coincide with our arrival.. Lots of places to visit. With the wonderful weather we did a boat grip from the Barbican area in Plymouth up the river Tamar which took us across the bay up past the naval dockyards. Another day we caught two different ferries from Plymouth to get across to Mt Edcumbe, a country park with beautiful gardens and lovely sea views and a very good restaurant. Not too far to drive around the back of Plymouth to Cornwall - Looe and Polperro. If you like gardens it is worth the short drive up to the Garden House on the southern edge of Dartmoor. Plenty of walking. The footpath down to the coastal path is at the bottom of the drive! An hour to Wembury Bay where there is a National Trust tearoom and a lovely beach. As a group of 8 we have rented many holiday homes but this was by far the best! We loved it so much we have already booked for next year. Thankyou for a wonderful holiday
Perfect property for us a group of 8 adults! Spotlessly clean throughout, extremely spacious with everything that you could possibly need! The position of the property is ideal with uninterrupted views on all sides especially from the dining room, which has fabulous sliding doors out onto balcony and patios!
The little touches of fresh flowers,Devon cream tea, wine and sparkling water were much appreciated by all!
There's a pub serving food within walking distance and The Mussel Inn a mile away.....both good! Great area for walking, birdwatching or just chilling, with many beautiful places nearby!
All communications with Richard, the owner, have been speedy, friendly and very informative with comprehensive instructions/directions!
We all said that we didn't want to leave at the end of the week! We would highly recommend this property to anyone of any age!
A big thank you to Richard and to Sue for her excellent caretaking skills!
We found Merrivale to be a lovely quiet place, fully equipped with everything you could possibly need. Stunning views over the sea from house and terraces. What a great find, would recommend this place to anyone.
Merrivale is only 5/10 minutes walk from the coast via a footpath at the end of the drive and within a mile along the coastal path to the east is the National Trust beach at Wembury and to the west the beach at Bovisand, both with toilets and cafe/shop. Within easy reach by car you are many of the Devon and Cornish beaches such as Whitsands, Bigbury, Thurlestone and Bantham, as well as the north coast beaches such as Bude, Polzeath and Newquay.
