Holiday Home in Uzumlu, Nr. Fethiye, Aegean Region, Turkey - Very Peaceful, Yet Only 100ms to Village Centre

Orchard house, in the village of Uzumlu, is unique and like no other house in the area. The original house dates back to the early 1900's and during renovations great care has been taken to retain as many of the original features as possible (beamed ceilings, original doors etc).

The house was renovated using local stone and local tradesmen.

The property is surrounded by high stone walls and entrance is via a solid steel gate so guests can be assured of privacy and security throughout their stay.

To maximise the 'al fresco' lifestyle there are 2 bedrooms and a bathroom on the ground floor and 1 bedroom, sitting room, kitchen and dining area on the first floor. A very large L shaped balcony is accessed from the dining area, from here guests may spend hours dining, enjoying chilled beer or wine, delicious locally produced organic fruit/vegetables and simply marvel at the beautiful mountain views. The village centre is only a 2 min walk away (which is very rare for rental villas) where the village square is surrounded by Turkish tea houses, bars, restaurants and several small shops selling locally hand woven goods such as table cloths and curtains as well as basic supplies. There is a regular bus (dolmus) service to Fethiye but a car would be advisable.

I am a British artist living and working in Lincolnshire.

As an artist I am always looking to find beauty and inspiration wherever I look, which is one of the main reasons I bought this house in Turkey (within a week of setting foot in the country for the first time ever!).

My father lived in Spain for many years and I used to be a frequent visitor there, but as lovely as Spain is it has become a little too 'English' for me. In essence, this area of Turkey reminds me of what Spain used to be like about 30 years ago, especially in this particular area of Turkey.

The Turkish people have an individual charm all of their own. They are a proud nation, very traditional and respectful in their nature....and of course there is the wall to wall sunshine throughout the summer months.

I have owned this property for several years and, with the aid of a good Turkish friend of mine, have restored and renovated it in a sympathetic and traditional way.

I first holidayed in Turkey 15 years ago and was surprised and delighted with the friendliness of its people, the clarity and temperature of its waters and the vast beauty of its countryside.

Although in the early days I enjoyed the all night party atmosphere of Hisaronu I now prefer the peace and tranquility of Uzumlu where I can paint, read or just simply relax with friends and family.

To me, although fairly simply furnished, this house offers everything anyone could ever want from a holiday home. I hope my guests come away with the same impression.

What makes this villa unique

Many of the new villas in Uzumlu have been built on the outskirts of the village in totally tourist developments.

This house is in the centre of the village where your neighbours are Turkish village folk and you are only a couple of minutes gentle stroll away from the village shops, bars and restaurants. You will be charmed by their friendliness and generosity. You won't hear loud music banging through the night and you won't be embarrassed by drunken party goers. The only sounds you will hear are distant dogs barking, cockerels crowing, cicadas chirping in the trees and of course the calling to prayer every few hours from the local mosque.

The house is situated in a secure and private high walled garden with steel gates at the entrance.

We enjoyed staying at the villa and loved the setting in the village below the mountains. The fruit trees in the garden were lovely to see and we did find a ripe orange which was a treat - you don't get those growing in Scotland!

What a beautiful home

We had a fantastic 2 weeks in this beautiful home which is equipped with absolutely everything you need to enjoy your stay, the most comfortable place that we have ever stayed. Gersel came everyday to clean the pool and was friendly although unobtrusive. We spent some wonderful evenings sitting on the upstairs terrace watching the sun go down and listening to the call to prayer echoing around the mountains ( absolutley beautiful). we tried every restaurant in the the village and they were all nice, friendly and well priced. All in all an amazing holiday in a stunning home .

Relaxing break, lovely surroundings

We met up with old friends, and the villa and it's location was perfect for us. The villa has been sympathetically restored and the location, in a quiet street within easy walking distance of the village centre, was ideal. We liked the fact that it was in a real village and not a complex of modern villas, loved the laid back way of life. The Owner's caretaker Gurzel, was lovely and couldn't have been more helpful.

We deliberately did not hire a car as we were there for only one week, we relaxed by the pool and ate (and drank) locally. Plenty of choice of restaurants and coffee shops and we tried to spread our custom around. When we did venture further afield we used the regular local bus or Dolmus, which was a great way to get about. Loved Fethiye (less than 30 minutes on the bus) but always glad to get back 'home'.

Suspect if you were trying to entertain children it would have been a little harder, but for us it was perfect!

Amazing house in a nice mountain village

We had a great time at the villa Orchard. Uzumlu is a beautiful location (very centrally for trips), also the village itself has a lot to offer (nice restaurants, scenic views, contact with local population). This holiday home is a true dream: nice swimming pool, lovely garden and a small but practical kitchen and spacious bedrooms. Our congratulations to the owner for this lovely stone built property and thanks for the nice holiday. This house is a must for anyone who wants to discover Turkey in a different way.

Special interest holidays:

This area is an artists haven, whether a figurative or landscape/seascape painter there is an abundance of material from which to draw inspiration from.

For historians this part of Turkey offers a wealth of historic attractions (Cadianda which is a 500bc Roman village is only 6km away, Kayakoy 'Ghost village' is 30 mins away).

For hikers and ramblers the local area has many fine scenic walks, and for the more energetic there is of course the 'Lycean Way' which begins just outside Hisaronu 30 mins away.

Other special interest holidays in this area include: PADI scuba diving courses from Fethiye, horse riding, paragliding and jeep safaris.

Coast/Beach:

Calis Beach is a long sandy beach near Fethiye harbour it is reached in 15 mins by car.

Olu Deniz Beach (the most photographed beach in Turkey) is a white pebble beach with crystal clear water. From here many activities are available including numerous watersports, paragliding and boat trips (12 island and Butterfly Valley). Adjoining Olu Deniz beach is the Blue Lagoon which is calm and gently sloping which is perfect for young children.

Travel:

Dalaman Airport is 40 mins by car. Antalya Airport is 2.5 hrs by car. Rhodes (Greece) is 45 mins by hydrofoil from Fethiye. Although a car is not essential (taxi from Dalaman to house cost approx £50), to fully explore this wonderful area of the Turquoise coast I would advise hiring a car (driving license required). I would be happy to arrange this on your behalf.

Distances:

Uzumlu village centre: 2 min stroll.

Fethiye town and harbour: 15 mins by car.

Saklikent Gorge: 45 mins by car.

Tlos & Yaka Park: 45 mins by car.

Hisaronu (countless bars, clubs, restaurants and shops). 30 mins by car.

Olu Deniz/blue lagoon: 35 mins by car.

Kayakoy Ghost village: 35 mins by car.

Patara Beach: (beautiful sandy beach) 45 mins by car.

Dalyan (mudbaths and nesting ground of Loggerhead turtle): 1 hour by car. Ephesus (truly amazing ancient site): 190 miles.

Further Details:

In Uzumlu there are several local shops supplying all the basic provisions including locally baked bread, meats, organic fruit/veg. There is also a market every friday where local farmers and traders sell their goods at very reasonable prices. There are some excellent restaurants and pide (Turkish pizza) houses in the village. Fethiye markets and supermarkets (Carrefor, Kipa and Migros) are excellent for most shopping needs. Also located in town are banks, bureau de change, Hospitals, boutiques as well as an abundance of leather goods, jewellery, and Turkish carpet/rug traders (enjoy haggling for a good bargain). Other places of interest in the town are the traditional Turkish baths and the fish market where you may choose from locally caught fresh fish from the market and it will be cooked for you by one of the surrounding restaurants.

Notes on accommodation: Please note: I would prefer guests not to smoke inside the house. There are ashtrays available should guests wish to smoke outside or on the balcony. There is air-conditioning in all bedrooms but as electicity in Turkey is very expensive I would really appreciate guests turning the A/C off when rooms are not being used. Outside: The private garden is one of the features of this property. Accessed from a very quiet lane in the village via ornate lockable steel gates, there is off road parking for 2 cars. The garden has 7 types of fruit trees including orange, clementine, pomegranate, fig, olive, lemon and grape. The private pool (3m x 5m) is 4' deep at the shallow end and 6' at the deep end. There are ample sunbeds, tables and chairs. Please note: The pool is not heated. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and bed linen are provided (please bring your own beach/pool towels). The house, towels and linen are cleaned prior to your arrival, extra washing/cleaning available at extra cost. Other: Artist studio in the garden (currently used for storage) has light and power, tiled floor (dimensions: 5m x 3m).
