About PHIL SILVESTER CBE

Phil and Glyn bought a beautiful charentaise farmhouse in 2003, clinching the deal on the same day England won the rugby world cup in Australia! For 5 years this was our maison secondaire (holiday home) or 'bolt hole'! Phil was a successful Headteacher of a large special school in Dorset for 16 years, after a teaching career which began in Coventry and Warwickshire. Phil was awarded the CBE in 2008 for services to special education. Glyn played the role of home maker for our 3 lovely children (Sam, Rebecca and Kate) whilst (also) working as a childminder, hospital receptionist and teaching assistant in schools. We moved to Puddletown (Dorset) in 1993 from Kenilworth (Warwickshire) due to Phil's new job. From 1989 to 2007 we built, established and managed Cote Holiday Cottages in Dorset. We emigrated in 2008 and started 'Gites de Brives' in 2009...!

PHIL SILVESTER CBE purchased this cottage in 2003

Why PHIL SILVESTER CBE chose Charente-Maritime

We have always loved France and (particularly) the south west of France. We have taken one or two holidays a year in France for almost 30 years and we always intended to buy a holiday home here. We chose the Charente maritime because it remains 'la vrai France' and it has a superb climate. The Charente maritime is the second sunniest area of France, after the Mediterranean.

The Charente has everything - beautiful villages, historic towns and cities (Cognac, Saintes, Angouleme, Pons and La Rochelle), picturesque countryside (vines and sunflowers aplenty!) - a majestic river and beautiful beaches. Moreover this region is unspoilt and easily accessible by car, train or plane (regional airports at Angouleme, La Rochelle and Bordeaux with Poitiers and Limoges a little further away).

What makes this cottage unique

We are ten minutes' drive from Cognac and Pons, twenty minutes from Saintes and an easy half an hour drive from the coast. We are in the middle of the 'golden triangle' of Cognac - Pons - Saintes in the Petite Champagne, the heart of the cognac producing countryside.

We enjoyed running holiday homes in the UK for ten years before emigrating to France in 2008. We had always planned to give up our 'day jobs' in schools to live our dream in France.

After a long year of building work we are now 'itching' to get started. We are looking forward to sharing our French oasis with others who need to relax and re-charge their batteries a little!

As good the picture? No BETTER!!

  • 5 of 5

Looking for a relaxing holiday - we were and we got it.

The quiet, the space, so relaxing. Space for the children to run, play badminton, football, boules, or just run in safety, with so much room.

The swimming pool bigger than most, able to properly swim, and cool down from the beautiful sunshine.

The house itself was lovely and clean, spacious and very well equipped. Lots of really nice touches - the welcome box filled with essentials to make sure you could settle in straight away, very thoughtful.

Really enjoyed Gite De Brives - look forward to return visit!

Great family holiday location

  • 4 of 5

We found the whole setup at Gites de brives to be really excellent - large open area for the kids to explore and play, great good sized pool and a really nice local area being secluded and yet close enough to get to the coast in a fairly short drive and nice towns to shop at or visit nearby.

The host, Phil and Glyn, were brilliant from the initial enquiry via email through to providing any advice or help needed whilst we were staying at the Gite. They seemed to strike a good balance between being around when you needed them or to say hello and chat whilst providing privacy and allowing you to 'get on with' your holiday.

The gite we rented was called 'La Figuerer' which had two bedrooms and a nice outside area with barbeque. It was well equipped, very clean and some nice features inside. It easily accommodated our 3 kids in the one big bedroom with us in the other double bedroom next door. Little touches like having the mosquito nets / grid on all windows so you could leave them open at night without worrying about insects (not that there seemed to be many around) were good as was having a great little welcome box with wine and bread and pasta and things was really appreciated after a long drive. We also both commented on the fact that it was nice to have a lot of the basics provided such as bin bags, toilet rolls and coffee and tea as we'd stayed in self-catering places before where those kind of things were missing and it was a pain to go and shop for them as soon as you arrived.

Having other families nearby worked really well for us with our kids making friends with the kids next door and there being plenty of space for them all to go and play, but in a very safe and nice environment.

I'd really recommend Gites de Brives to others.

Great Gite

  • 5 of 5

Good holiday property, well managed by on-site English (but also French speaking) owners.

Whilst not intrusive, they are always available for advice on things to do.

Well maintained pool. Fast wifi.

Our teenagers loved it.

Gites de Brives

  • 4 of 5

We found the Gites de Brives charming; great facilities (pool, table tennis, badminton, boules etc) with hosts Phil and Glyn striking the perfect balance of being helpful (nothing too much trouble) but not invading our precious holiday time too much. We cycled, swam in the river, toured distilleries, canoed (down weirs!), walked, played tennis, and spent time on the lovely coast about 40 mins drive away. Location was a great balance of the quiet, french rural idyll, the activities of the river and the relative proximity of the coast.

Special interest holidays:

We have experience of providing corporate hospitality and can arrange bespoke weeks focusing on team-building, leadership training, wine/cognac/pineau-tasting, relaxation, yoga, local walks, French, or machine embroidery (etc!) by arrangement.

If this provision appeals to you or your group or organisation -please contact us to discuss your individual requirements. We can accommodate up to 30 people at any one time (this is much easier in the quieter months), other bookings permitting.

Coast/Beach:

The nearest beaches of the beautiful Cote Sauvage (including Royan) or the Gironde estuary are about a half an hour's drive away. The child friendly beaches of the Gironde Estuary, with miles of safe sandy beaches and lovely little coastal villages and towns are definitely not to be missed if sand is an important part of your holiday! Two of the best local beaches are St Georges-de-Didonne and St Palais-sur-Mer (both near Royan).

Travel:

We are 4.5 hrs drive from St Malo and Caen; 6 hrs from Cherbourg, Le Havre and Roscoff; 7 hrs drive from the Tunnel, Calais and Boulogne. Using the motorway - exit the A10 at junction 36 (for Pons). A car is really handy due to the number of places to visit! Train: TGV (Paris to Angouleme or Saintes). Airports: Angouleme 30 mins, La Rochelle 1 hr 10 mins, Bordeaux 1 hr 15 mins. It is also possible to fly to Poitiers or Limoges. Use Ryanair, Easyjet, BA, Flybe, BMIBaby, Jet 2, Air France.

Distances:

We live in a quiet hamlet (Les Morinauds) on the outskirts of the pretty village of Brives sur Charente. The next village (Salignac) is 2 miles away. Our rural setting is perfect for walking and cycling and, generally 'getting away from it all'!

Places of interest include Cognac 7 miles, Pons 9 miles, Saintes 12 miles, Chaniers 18 miles (chain ferry), Jonzac 18 miles (thermal centre), Angouleme 32 miles, Royan 35 miles and La Palmyre Zoo (biggest in Europe, 1600+ animals!) 45 miles.

Further Details:

The surrounding area has a great deal to offer from the buzzing town of Cognac (lots of cafes and boutique shops - not forgetting world-famous distillery tours etc!), to the beautiful ancient towns of Pons and Saintes. Weekly local markets are held in Cognac, Pons, Jarnac and Saintes. There are a multitude of local restaurants and bars all within an easy drive from the property (see below). Some are (luckily!) only about 15 minutes by bike.

Briefly:

Post Office - Brives sur Charente.

Local shop (general stores, boulangerie and Post Office) - Salignac, Perignac, Dompierre and Rouffiac.

Local restaurants - Salignac, Rouffiac, Orlac, Ars, Montils, Dompierre, Perignac, Cognac, Pons, Chaniers etc.

Supermarkets: Cognac, Pons or Saintes.

Cash point: Chaniers (Credit Agricole) and at all local supermarkets (see above).

Banks: Cognac and Pons.

Tennis: Rouffiac or Ars.

Swimming (indoor and outdoor): Cognac and Saintes, coast, Charente.

Fishing: Charente.

Canoeing: Charente (Brives, Rouffiac, Dompierre), Seugne (Pons), coast.

Surfing: Cote Sauvage.

Aquatic Centre (pools, gym, sauna, massage, beauty treatments): Jonzac

We also run a B&B should you need additional rooms or want friends or family to visit you while you enjoy your holiday with us.
