Phil and Glyn bought a beautiful charentaise farmhouse in 2003, clinching the deal on the same day England won the rugby world cup in Australia! For 5 years this has been our maison secondaire (holiday home) or 'bolt hole'! Phil was a successful Headteacher of a large special school in Dorset for 16 years, after a teaching career which began in Coventry and Warwickshire. Phil was awarded the CBE in 2008 for services to special education. Glyn played the role of home maker for our 3 lovely children (Sam, Rebecca and Kate) whilst (also) working as a childminder, hospital receptionist and teaching assistant in schools. We moved to Puddletown (Dorset) in 1993 from Kenilworth (Warwickshire) due to Phil's new job. From 1989 to 2007 we built, established and managed Cote Holiday Cottages.
PHIL SILVESTER CBE purchased this barn in 2003
We have always loved France and (particularly) the south west of France. We have taken one or two holidays a year in France for almost 30 years and we always intended to buy a holiday home here. We chose the Charente maritime because it remains 'la vrai France' and it has a superb climate. The Charente maritime is the second sunniest area of France, after the Mediterranean.
The Charente has everything - beautiful villages, historic towns and cities (Cognac, Saintes, Angouleme, Pons and La Rochelle), picturesque countryside (vines and sunflowers aplenty!) - a majestic river and beautiful beaches. Moreover this region is unspoilt and easily accessible by car, train or plane (regional airports at Angouleme, La Rochelle and Bordeaux with Poitiers and Limoges a little further away).
We are ten minutes' drive from Cognac and Pons, twenty minutes from Saintes and an easy half an hour drive from the coast. We are in the middle of the 'golden triangle' of Cognac - Pons - Saintes in the Petite Champagne, the heart of the cognac producing countryside.
We enjoyed running holiday homes in the UK for ten years before emigrating to France in 2008. We had always planned to give up our 'day jobs' in schools to live our dream in France.
After a long year of building work we are now 'itching' to get started. We are looking forward to sharing our French oasis with others who need to relax and re-charge their batteries a little!
Bookings are only accepted with a 25% (non-refundable) deposit. Holidays (priced in euros) can be paid for in sterling at the prevailing rate of exchange. We require full payment 8 weeks before the holiday (to include a 200 euro cleaning and breakages 'bond'). This will be refunded after your stay and we have checked the inventory. The refund will be within 2 weeks of your leaving date. Bookings which are not fully paid at this time will be re-advertised. See 'Booking Form'.
Our changeover day is usually Saturday. This can be flexible in the quieter months (not the UK school summer holidays) when we are not fully booked. Arrival 4.00pm or later (please confirm by email). Departure 10.00am or earlier. Thank you.
Notes on prices:
Prices in euros per week. We require a 25% deposit to secure the booking and the balance is payable 8 weeks prior to arrival. With the balance a 200 euro cash deposit is also payable (to cover the cost of any cleaning/breakages following your stay). This will be refunded within 2 weeks of your departure, subject to any deductions. See Booking Form. We are happy to negotiate discounts for winter lets and holidays of 2 weeks or more. Please contact us. Thank you - looking forward to meeting you!
We stayed in the Studio flat in July and were pleasantly surprised as it was nicer than in the video, and the views from the windows were much greener. We found it well equipped and comfortable and we had plenty of space for 2. The fly screens on the windows are a real boon! We didn’t miss an oven and the hanging space was quite OK.
The pool was immaculate, though it could get busy at times. We also enjoyed playing table tennis and boules, but never quite got around to badminton. But we did hire bikes and have a great spin around the sunflowers and vineyards. And we had some great trips out in the area - there is so much more to do than we realised. Definitely needed another week!
Glyn and Phil are very helpful and friendly, and gave us some great advice about the area. We really enjoyed our stay and we'd love to go again!
Thanks to Phil & Glyn for a wonderful week in the lovely well kept, well provisioned Le Studio. Peaceful surroundings with a gorgeous pool for cooling off in the afternoon sun ! 15-20 minutes to Cognac and the usual tourist attractions for the distillery visits or a lazy boat ride down the river, and in less than an hour to the seaside resort of Royan and the beautiful beach at St.George de Didonne, For the connoisseurs there are umpteen local Pineau producers, so spoilt for choice. All in all a very relaxing weeks vacation.
Special interest holidays:
We have experience of providing corporate hospitality and can arrange bespoke weeks focusing on team-building, leadership training, wine/cognac/pineau-tasting, relaxation, yoga, local walks, French, or machine embroidery (etc!) by arrangement.
If this provision appeals to you or your group or organisation -please contact us to discuss your individual requirements. We can accommodate up to 30 people at any one time (this is much easier in the quieter months), other bookings permitting.
The nearest beaches of the beautiful Cote Sauvage (including Royan) or the Gironde estuary are about a half an hour's drive away. The child friendly beaches of the Gironde Estuary, with miles of safe sandy beaches and lovely little coastal villages and towns are definitely not to be missed if sand is an important part of your holiday! Two of the best local beaches are St Georges-de-Didonne and St Palais-sur-Mer (both near Royan).
We are 4.5 hrs drive from St Malo and Caen; 6 hrs from Cherbourg, Le Havre and Roscoff; 7 hrs drive from the Tunnel, Calais and Boulogne. Using the motorway - exit the A10 at junction 36 (for Pons). A car is really handy due to the number of places to visit! Train: TGV (Paris to Angouleme or Saintes). Airports: Angouleme 30 mins, La Rochelle 1 hr 10 mins, Bordeaux 1 hr 15 mins. It is also possible to fly to Poitiers or Limoges. Use Ryanair, Easyjet, BA, Flybe, BMIBaby, Jet 2, Air France.
We live in a quiet hamlet (Les Morinauds) on the outskirts of the pretty village of Brives sur Charente. The next village (Salignac) is 2 miles away. Our rural setting is perfect for walking and cycling and, generally 'getting away from it all'!
Places of interest include Cognac 7 miles, Pons 9 miles, Saintes 12 miles, Chaniers 18 miles (chain ferry), Jonzac 18 miles (thermal centre), Angouleme 32 miles, Royan 35 miles and La Palmyre Zoo (biggest in Europe, 1600+ animals!) 45 miles.
The surrounding area has a great deal to offer from the buzzing town of Cognac (lots of cafes and boutique shops - not forgetting world-famous distillery tours etc!), to the beautiful ancient towns of Pons and Saintes. Weekly local markets are held in Cognac, Pons, Jarnac and Saintes. There are a multitude of local restaurants and bars all within an easy drive from the property (see below). Some are (luckily!) only about 15 minutes by bike.
