About us: Margaret is a trained junior primary school teacher and has lived in Italy for the last 20 years and moved to Cortona with her husband Maurizio and two boys, Thomas 16and Elliott 14 nine years ago. When not playing mum, she is busy in the greenhouse or creating beautiful photographs. Maurizio, Italian born and bred divides his time between Tuscany and Milan where he is a successful advertising photographer and film director. Thomas is 14 years old and passionate about fast cars. He goes to the school in Australia. His little brother Elliott who is 12 years old loves computer programming and mine craft! We are all completely bilingual in Italian and English.
Margaret purchased this Farmhouse in 2005
Why Margaret chose Cortona
Welcome to our home. Having become tired of the city and smog filled air of Milan we began searching for a better way of life for our children and ourselves 9 years ago. We stumbled on this property and instantly fell in love with it! The property probably dates back to the 1100s with the newest part being built in the early 1800s. The house would originally have been built by the farm workers who were under the power of the land owner who lived next door (evident by the tower on our neighbours house). We have been told that our home housed 30 people in the early 1920s as well as a barn under the house for the animals. The land was let completely go after the second world war when many farms in Italy were abandoned for the lure of easy work in the cities.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Our little farm offers a respite from the bustling Tuscan towns that surround us. The benefits of being at 650m above sea level means that the nights are always cool, no matter how hot the days are. Our 24/7 presence means that we are always on hand for advice about what to see and where to go and "how to say in Italian" as well as for any questions or problems that you may have.

Fantastic stay - super relaxed and very welcoming
We had such a lovely stay here. Margaret and her family are so warm, friendly and welcoming. The place is perfect for a relaxing family break. We had our toddler with us and Margaret went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed - the place is so well equipped and has everything you could possibly need, with more as well! The space is secure which meant our daughter could roam around freely and really enjoy her time as well. We'd definitely recommend a stay here.
Beautiful, rustic location. Lovely welcoming and accommodating hosts. Definitely recommend.
We chose this place because we liked the look of the accommodation and because of the location. Communication before and during our stay was fantastic. Our hosts couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. We had everything we needed on site and directions and advice was extremely useful. The accommodation was comfortable and well maintained. We didn't request any provisions to be provided but these were offered. There were no issues during our stay and we were made to feel extremely welcome. A car was essential and we were made aware of this before our stay. I would definitely recommend for the future and would use Owners Direct again without hesitation.
Comfortable and beautiful
We arrived exhausted and left 8 days later refreshed and delighted. It was the 4th stop of our 3 months European trip, living in Australia. The steep decent to the property didn't prepare us for the comfortable, old, real Tuscan homestead, with a lovely peaceful view of green hills. A large blue pool shimmered in the depths of the valley. Our hosts shows us round the 2 person flat attached to the main house, but completely seperate, with little shadowed courtyard, all facilities, a fine big bed, roomy wardrobes and fully equipped kitchen. All clean and modern, without being over luxurious.
The lay out around the property was secluded as well as interesting, there is a comunial fire place with a great look out were guests can gather, and barbecue, sometimes our host would have their barbecue there and we joined them. We did some lovely walks, Cortona, the nearest town is beautiful and a stunning 14 stages of the cross series of mosaics by the famous Gino Severini lines an .ancient steep decending road from St Marguerita church down to Cortona. Go and have a drink on piazza of the small town in one of the lovely cafe's and wander past the beautiful little shops. Lunch at the rustic tiny trattoria Tacconi and Nanni is a must.
Amazing views, welcoming owners and great villa!
Perfect place to unwind and relax! Highly recommended
Close enough for day trips to Siena, Tuscany and many more. When renting a car make sure its strong enough to get up the hills though!!
Great launchpad to explore Tuscany
We were greeted by both Margaret and Maurizio on arrival and my girlfriend had given them the heads up that it was actually my birthday so we were welcomed by bunting, balloons, champagne and some Italian nibbles.
Over the course of the week we visited Cortona which is hillside town about 15/20 mins away on the same road, pretty much on the doorstep. This place is great for food and wine, using Trip Advisor to pick our restaurants for us, we couldn't go wrong. In fact I believe Margaret and Maurizio said we'd struggle to find bad food or wine here, which sounds accurate now looking back.
Another place we visited was Montepulciano, which was about 40 mins away and a drive through various vineyards, sunflower fields and general outstanding Italian countryside. Montepulciano, like Cortona is great for sight-seeing, food and wine. Great views span the landscape around and you'll want plenty of space on your camera for pictures.
We also visited Siena which was similar to the above but more of a city, so more tourists and traffic etc.
Getting back to the accommodation - the villa/apartment we had was a good size, very large bathroom and Queen-size bed I think? The place was cool and airy as long as you kept the curtains and windows closed during the day, which we were advised to do the minute we arrived. One evening Margaret and Maurizio cooked a BBQ for everyone staying (us + a Danish family) which was a great evening and had us up till after 2am, making the trip to Siena the following day a little tough! Not a fault of their hosting, more the 5 bottles of wine we ploughed our way through!
Around the day trips we spent time during the day round the pool. It feels like a swimming pool in the middle of a jungle, quite strange, but very relaxing and not too deep that my non-swimming girlfriend could even float about in it, albeit using the Danish kids inflatable dragon.
There's plenty of walking and exploring that can be done, some only 15 mins drive away, but the temperatures in Tuscany this week have been an impressive 36/37 degrees during the middle of the day, so you need to rise early! Something I failed to do, mainly again down to the fantastic wine the night before, my kryptonite.
In summary, the listing/facilities description is accurate, only advice would be for Margaret to stick a sign at the top of the road for the farm as the private no entry sign was confusing. In short - we were well looked after, hope to return one day!
Beautiful honeymoon at stunning Tuscan Property
My new husband & I stayed in the 'Mora' Apartment for our honeymoon, it was beautiful!
The bed was super comfy and the apartment was cool (considering it was summer). We were able to cook dinner each night on the
Outdoor BBQ with incorporated hob and hot-plate which was great for summer cooking . We enjoyed plenty of sunshine beside the pool too. The whole property had a great vibe and had plenty of 'private' space for us. It was also
fantastic value for money : )
Coast/Beach: The closest beach is at Grosetto and takes a good two hours of driving. Travel: A rental car is essential in this area of Tuscany as public transport is scant. Perugia 60km. Firence 130km. Roma Fiumicino 250km. From Cortona: Keeping the ancient walls of Cortona on your right head on towards Citta di Castello. At Portole, keep to the right and continue for another 3.5km. At the number 15 blue and white road sign turn immediately right onto a white gravel track. Continue down the track until you come upon small brown barn in a field. You have arrived! Further Details: Not suitable for wheelchair access.
