Beautiful views but building site next door
We booked last October and had many email correspondence before our trip. We arrived to the apartment to a very smelly property, it smelt like it had not been aired out over the winter. The sheets and bedding were damp and not nice to sleep in. Mould was in the picture frames - big green mould!! It looked like the whole apartment had not been given a refresh at all. We had to call in the caretaker twice because of a continuous running toilet which was so loud. There was no information about the property, ie where to put bins, the local area, how to use oven, you know, the usual information you read when you rent a holiday home. The swimming pool had green residue which one of the holiday tennants needed to clean, the whole area looked very inloved and not refreshed, we were very disppointed. And the most disappointing partof our holiday is that ther eis a 51 bed hotel being built right next door. Builders were working with machinery from 7.45 all day long, there was no peace on the balcony, there was dust, all you can expect from a building site. Awful noise and I was very upset that Wendy did not advise us of this building affecting us right next door. We spoke to holiday tennants next door and they felt exactly the same about their apartment - damp and noisy with the builders. Apparently the winter has been wet and harsh this year, but even so, airing the apartment, making sure no mould and a good clean before guests arrive and of course advising about building sites!!! Some of the apartments have been closed because of the building noise and dust. Wendy should have checked the apartment before guests arrive. I would not stay here again because of the mould and noise issue.
Lovely village and nice apartment.
The apartment was well equipped and comfy with really superb views across the sea and upwards to the still snow-capped white mountains.
We went right at the beginning of the season when the weather was still a little cool following a harsh winter. This meant the apartment was cold and a bit damp and a plug in radiator would have been welcome as the aircon didn’t seem to want to blow hot air. The shower rooms could have done with brighter lights and the main bathroom could have benefitted from and extractor fan as it got very wet with no where for the moisture to go. Also somewhere to store your toothbrush other than above the loo would be good!
Communication with Wendy was slow initially when I had received nothing about entry details until I chased as I got on the plane on our way there; but she was superbly responsive throughout our stay.
Beautiful views, great pool, we loved it
We stayed for 10 days and had a wonderful time. 5 min walk to the beach, beautiful views and great outdoor balcony. The pool is also great, about 11 m long. Apartment had everything we needed. All in all a wonderful holiday.
Lovely apartment in a wonderful resort, great holiday but expensive wi-fi!
Four days before our stay in this Almyrida apartment and I was very nervous, having paid for our accommodation in full but received no information or address despite several chasing emails. I was also a bit peeved at having to pay an extra 55 euros for Wi-Fi during our 10 night stay (I'm pretty sure that no-one pays 2000 euros a year for Wi-Fi, which is the pro-rata of 5.5 euros per night).
Anyway, two complaints over, I did receive directions eventually and once there we had a lovely vacation in Wendy's home. The apartment is spacious and well equipped. There is access to a shared pool which was always immaculately clean and warm. Furniture was of a reasonable to high standard and all rooms had air-con which was very welcome in the July heat! The views from the apartment were impressive. I'm missing them already.
The village of Almyrida is fantastic. A short walk to the resort centre with a lovely beach (crystal clear waters, plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas) and lots of places to eat out in the evening.
In summary, improve the communication and reduce the Wi-Fi cost (no-one likes feeling ripped off) and it's a 5* holiday experience.
Everything within walking distance
Having just returned from This beautiful resort totally relaxed and very relectant to leave. I can't praise this little fishing village of Almyrida enough.
The apartment was clean, well equipped and comfortable. There is a good sized swimming pool set in the gardens of the apartment...although it was a little cool for us as it was early in the year to swim.
A perfect base for us to explore the surrounding villages and resorts. The beach is only a 10 minute stroll away, with a variety of shops, mini markets, cash machines and a bakery. Some mornings we sat eating breakfast overlooking the bay with freshly baked bread. Glorious.
If your up to it there is a diving centre and windsurfing for rental. Or do as we did and laze on the sunbeds watching those falling of.
Along the seafront we found many Tavernas and bars all serving excellent Greek cuisine, and to our surprise we had complimentary raki and sweet after dinner. As the waiter told us you have 2 shots only...one for each leg.
I would recommend a trip into Chaniá for shopping and Falassarna to watch the sun set into the sea.
If your looking for relaxtion, a beach holiday, great food and wine all within walking distance of the apartment with beautiful sunsets over the Souda Bay...this is it. We will definitely return.
Dear Barry, I'm so glad that you and your family have totally enjoyed your holiday in my apartment in Almyrida. Hope to see you soon in the near future.
Lovely once we got in!
Just got home from beautiful crete. The apartment is lovely- very well equipped, clean, modern and spacious. My 4 year old really enjoyed the pool, although she struggled with the walk up the hill on the way back from the beach! The only thing that is needed is a sun umbrella that is not broken as the balcony doesn't get any shade until mid afternoon.
On the down side, we arrived late on Saturday night and struggled to find the apartment. Although the directions Wendy sent us were very detailed, the only sign was for 'Phoenix villas'. Once we had located the correct building, we found there was no key left for us, meaning we had to check into a hotel at 1am! Finally got in at 4 pm the next day after many phone calls. But the rest of our visit went much more smoothly and the cost of the hotel was refunded by the end of our stay.
I would definitely recommend the accommodation and the location, especially for young kids, but I would recommend a car to make the most of seeing the local area with many ruins and beautiful beaches.
A 5 minutes easy walk takes you to the blue flagged beach resort of Almyrida. The gentle sloping beach makes it very safe for children. More active holiday makers can make use of the windsurfing school or other boating pursuits. Kalives is a 5 min drive and is slightly larger then Almyrida with 2 big stretches of beaches. The nearby picturesque cove is ideal for snorkeling, diving or just jumping in!
Car hire is not essential. The nearest airport is Chania (40 mins drive). Heraklion Airport is approx 1.5hrs drive away. Car hire is possible with Auto Club, Kalives Travel or any of the main companies at both airports.
The numorous restaurants, mini-market and selection of shops of almyrida is only 5 min walk away. Kalives town, beach, restaurants, shops and supermarkets: 5 min drive. Chania town, harbour, shops, cobbled lanes, market hall, leather stalls, restaurants and excursions: 25 min drive.
45 min drive away is a fabulous water park and go carts. In Chania you will find many museums and historic churches off quiet squares. There are many boat trips on offer from the historic harbour area as well as many fabulous restaurants. For the young at heart there are many bars and discos. Chania also provides a selection of tourist shops to top boutiques. The large historic covered market hall provides a different shopping experience one not to be missed. Above Chania towards the airport side are many coffee houses and restaurants that provide breathtaking views over the city. The villa is situated very well for exploring the many picture postcard villages in the mountains and around the coast. Only a short drive from the villa takes you to the lovely Lake Kournas (20 mins), Avocado Farms and villages (25 mins), and for longer drives take one of the many scenic drives through the white mountains to the south coast and bath in the Lybian Sea. There are many half and full day drives available.
