Beautiful home from home
Beautiful property with everything you need to ensure your stay is enjoyable whatever the weather. Tennis, pool table, swimming pool and a delightful hot tub. Jacquie was a lovely host too with welcoming card and home made scones with clotted cream and jam on arrival. Overall lovely accomodation.
Fabulous Spring Break
We were SO LUCKY to squeeze a beautiful Spring Break in between snowy, cold weekends, enjoying blue skies and Spring weather. The Property was warm and cosy and would have been fine even if it had turned colder. It has lovely views and heaps of space for us all. The kids wanted to take the hot tub home with them. We really enjoyed Appledore, a nearby fishing village (visit the Coffee Cabin) and ate at the Thatched Inn (just down the road) twice.
So glad you enjoyed your Mothering Sunday treat! My Mum always says the best gift on special occasions is to spend quality time with the family!
Great for large get togethers in a beautiful location
We had a reunion here which was perfect.
Everyone had a great time and the facilities were very good.
Situated in a lovely location to explore the south west.
A lovely place to stay.
Excellent house with all the amenities we needed
We loved everything, and Jacquie was very helpful. Unfortunately the internet wasn't working the weekend we were there but I think this was a temporary problem and to be honest it did us all good to be disconnected for a while. Pool and hot tub both lovely and lots of space in the house and garden for socialising. Highly recommend!
We love South Clay!
South Clay was a fantastic place to stay for a weeks family holiday which included 7 adults and 4 children, ages ranging from 20 months to 60+ years. The house is extremely spacious, very well equipped, and sparkling clean. On arrival, all the basics are provided so you could literally arrive with your suitcase, drop anchor, (go to the pub?) and shop the next day if needed. Good shopping is available a short drive away. The amazing facilities, which were all well maintained and in exellent condition, meant that when we weren't out and about, there was always something for everyone to do. There is so much to do nearby, and nothing is far away. Our big disappointment is that we didn't discover the Tarker Trail earlier in the week! The oysters from The Shack in Westward Ho! are a must. The pub in the village was great; walkable, good beer, good food, child friendly and also dog friendly. They do a Sunday carvery which we missed but it looked amazing.
Jacquie was very welcoming and whilst we didn't feel 'watched', she was always there and very helpful if we needed help or had any questions.
We all highly recommend South Clay, and hope to return again some time. Thankyou Jacquie and Steve.
Thanks for finding time to write a lovely review Mel. You have a lovely family, we look forward to welcoming you all back to North Devon again.
There are sea views from nearly every room. Children and adults will love the sandy beaches, the rock pools and the cliffs of North Devon and North Cornwall. Famous for it's surfing and kiting beaches and traditional fishing villages (Appledore and Clovelly) most of which can be reached by car between 5 and 30 minutes.
Bristol and Exeter are the South West of England's main airports. A choice of car hire is available at both with driving times to Southclay: 2 and a half hours and 1 and a half hours respectively.
Barnstaple is the nearest train station, 20 minutes from Southclay. There is an infrequent bus service or it is an easy taxi ride.
Near by, Bideford (2.5 miles) has town amenities, restaurants and delightful quayside where boat trips are available to Lundy Island.
The area is famous for water sports and activity holidays including, surfing, sailing, water skiing, kiting, diving, rock climbing, horse riding, fishing and more, whilst walkers and cyclists will enjoy the famous Tarka Trail, the idyllic countryside and the coastal footpaths. Golf at the Royal North Devon (the oldest links course in England) is only 3 miles along the coast.

About Jacquie Willoughby
I was born a farmer's daughter and grew up in the village of Abbotsham. Having moved away, I was delighted to have the opportunity to come back and bring up my children here. I have three grown up girls, now 22, 24 and 26, who are mostly away now but my mum and my brother and two step children live close by and most of the rest of my relations are buried in the local church yard! I love living in North Devon and particularly in this wonderful village. It means we know everyone in Abbotsham, we have a great support network and in return we are passionate about supporting the local rural and business community. If you need any introductions or have any questions about where to go and what to do I am sure I will be able to help you.
Jacquie Willoughby purchased this House in 2003
Why Jacquie Willoughby chose Abbotsham
Southclay is in a fabulous location on the edge of the village with spectacular views over open countryside to the sea. We built the house ourselves including a sunken tennis court so that the sea view was maintained. We originally intended to move our family into Southclay, it was therefore built with a really high specification but having rented the property out for a couple of months in the first season never got around to the move as our repeat visitors begged us to keep it as a holiday let! The Annex is actually on the end of our family home, adjacent to Southclay. Recently converted (the barn end of a Devon longhouse) It is a delightful, stone, character cottage with its own hot tub. My husband and I rather rattle around in the other end of the house now the children have grown up but love to share the garden, the tennis court and the pool with our guests.
What makes this House unique
An exceptionally friendly village with a great community spirit, good local pub, church, chapel, village school and community play area and the Big Sheep tourist attraction at the bottom of the hill... Abbotsham has something for everyone and views of the coastline to definitely write home about! The coastal footpath and our local beach is accessible down delightful narrow Devon lanes and footpaths about 20 minutes walk away. Southclay is convenient to the main A39 highway (1 minute's drive) so excellent for cutting journey times and as a base for exploring the rest of North Devon yet from Southclay you would never believe a main road was nearby. It has only village traffic noise, a peaceful rural aspect and beautiful uninterrupted sea views....
