About Barbara Hubbard

I am Austrian but grew up in Germany where I also worked as cabin crew for Lufthansa for 10 years. We moved to France in 1982 and I lived in Pillac since 1983 together with my three children. Pillac is still the same as it was when we moved here, a quiet and beautiful little village where one can relax and enjoy the lovely surroundings.

Barbara Hubbard purchased this house in 1983

Why Barbara Hubbard chose Charente

Le Relais is a great place for groups of all kinds. I had groups with activities, like painting courses, writer's classes etc. but mostly the groups are friends and families with ages ranging from 3 month to 90 years.

There are all kind of activities for everybody and lots of space inside the house and outside in the garden and around the pool.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We choose this place as it was quite a central meeting point for the members of our family and because its such a big and peaceful homely sort of house. Perfect for a family reunion. Not too far from Bergerac or Angouleme (so cheap flights for all). The house is an old, beautiful big place. Lots of rooms, huge dining area, and a very family friendly sort of feel to the place. The pool area is fenced off so we didn't need to worry about the kids too much. The owner is easy going and accommodating, fluent in English and non intrusive. Lovely lady. I recommend this place for large groups, family/friend reunions and for people who want to get away from it all. We didn't go out to any restaurants, we preferred to stay in and cook our own meals, BBQ, etc. The house is surrounded by vineyards and gentle hills - great place to go for walks. All in all it was exactly what we wanted!

A Perfect House

  • 5 of 5

After looking at many houses big enough to cope with our party of 14, we booked to stay at Le Relais to celebrate my 60th birthday with family traveling from the UK and Australia. We ranged from 6 to 70, and the house was perfect for each and everyone of us, with relaxing spaces for the adults - outdoor dining, lounging around the pool or relaxing in the lounge as well as early morning walks around the Hamlet and local area. The 6 - 19 year old's were kept busy with more than enough to keep them occupied with pool, table tennis, swimming and playing football.

The photos and description on this web site are a perfect depiction of the house and facilities. It was typically French (just want I wanted) and was well equipped with plenty of crockery etc for the largest parties, and enough fridges, cookers and washing machines to meet all our needs, along with plenty of parking.

I got a good feel about our stay when I rang Barbara to check that the boys would have enough space to play football, she couldn't have been more helpful and this continued with her warm welcome on our arrival, and she even dropped in to wish me a happy birthday, a lovely thought.

Pillac is a small Hamlet, well located for local towns with markets and restaurants, the market at Riberac was especially good, we had a lovely lunch at the La Taverne in Aubeterre and enjoyed mirco brewery overlooking beautiful countryside in Bors.

I couldn't recommend Le Relais highly enough and would love to have the opportunity to get another party together to make a return visit.

Thank you Barbara

Such a wonderful place for a large family reunion.

  • 5 of 5

HI Barbara

Just a not to say how very much we all enjoyed our holiday and celebration of my sister's 60th birthday last month.

What a wonderful house you have. Such a lot of space, comfort and provided facilities and activities for all generations. We had a fabulous time.

The family reunion with those from England was very special especially for my grandson who met his extended family for the first time, all together. It was well worth the travel from Australia.

We explored local market villages and dined out a few times but time around the house and pool in such a relaxed environment was extra special.

We took many, many photos but one of my favourite ones is taken from my bedroom window. It really captures your house and the French architecture and landscape of the region.

With fond memories for many years to come, thank you.

What a fantastic place!

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely place to come and stay. This year was the second time of visiting Le Relais and yet again it was a fabulous week. The swimming pool, table tennis, badminton, pool table and toys provided meant that there was something for everyone to do, regardless of age. We had a mixed group ranging from 9 months to 69 years old and we all had a lovely time, (again!). The dining facilities are great and we enjoyed eating outside every day. Although we didn't need to use the indoor dining room, it would have seated us all comfortably. There is a good supply of travel cots/high chairs etc so all the youngsters in the group were perfectly provided for.

Nearby Aubeterre is beautiful with a delicious ice cream parlour and the underground church well worth a visit. We also took advantage of the river beach and the kayaking too. The Friday market at Riberac is also worth a visit.

Thank you Barbara for your hospitality - we had a super time and are looking forward to coming back soon.

our family holiday in Pillac

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had organized an extended family week to celebrate my 70th birthday, to include our three children, and 6 grandchildren up to the age of 9. We also included a young french family with their 3 offspring. Pillac itself is a tiny hamlet, in lovely rolling countryside extensively covered with sunflowers during our stay, and with delightful, interesting towns within easy reach. The house was extensive, well furnished and all that was needed for our large group. The owner was welcoming and helpful, her property clean and well sorted. With the swimming-pool, table tennis, and pool table there was everything that was needed on site to entertain youngsters. We had a lovely time, would recommend the property to others, and would like to return when there is next a suitable excuse to do so.

Incredible for big groups with kids

  • 5 of 5

What a superb stay we had a le relais! We're devastated that we had to leave. We were 13 adults and 9 kids (all under 2.5 years) and we had an absolute ball. From the extremely well-prepared facilities (potties, cots, highchairs, LOTS of crockery and cutlery, pool, pool toys, toy room etc - the list is endless) to the well thought-out dining arrangements for large groups - it was perfect!

Swimming at the river was a real high too!

Map

Coast/Beach:

Aubeterre, officially one of the most beautiful villages in France, is approximately 10 mins drive away. St.Aulay is about 15 mins drive away and both have lovely sandy river beaches with children's playgrounds, water slide and beach side restaurants. There are some wonderful beaches on the Atlantic coast (Royan), about 2 hours drive away, good for a day trip.

Travel:

Airports: Angouleme, 40 min drive. Bergerac 1.5 hours drive. Bordeaux Airport is also about 1.5 hours drive away. The TGV (train grand vitesse) goes to Angouleme. A car is essential in this area and there are facilities for car hire at all the airports and train station.

Distances:

Le Relais is situated approximately 5km from both St.Severin and Aubeterre. Both villages have a supermarket, pharmacy, restaurants, butcher and of course, baker! Some 20 minutes drive away are the market towns of Chalais and Riberac. Cognac, really worth a visit and a tour around one of the cognac houses is about an hour drive away. About the same distance south are St.Emilion and the vineyards of Bordeaux.
