Tranquility, Beauty, Boating Paradise

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Beautiful house right on the glorious Guadiana River. Sailing dinghy with outboard, 2 kayaks and canadiana canoe are provided.

No television, no wifi BUT a glorious situation on the Guadiana river in southern Portugal. See also our website; The house is set in 2 acres of private land and has its own landing stage where the boats are kept. The Guadiana is perhaps one of Europe's great undiscovered rivers, having 75km of beautiful, navigable waterway between Vila Real at the mouth of the river and the old fortified town of Mertola which is the highest point of navigation for boats. Canoeists have a further 30km of very remote water to explore upstream of Mertola. For the not so boat minded the beaches and golf courses of the Algarve are 45 mins drive away. there is a large network of footpaths and seldom used tracks to explore. Bicycles, motor scooters and off road buggies can be hired in the local village in season (bicycle hire is possible all year with prior notice). The old portuguese towns of Mertola, Serpa and Beja are an easy drive away for a day´s sightseeing. A little further are Seville (2 hrs) and Lisbon (3 hrs).

Guestbook comments from the owner

We're having a fantastic week. We feel like 'Swiss Family Robinson' - hope you like the raft we made. We've kayaked, sailed, swum, sunbathed and made full use of all the excellent facilities here.

We have had a fantastic time at your Casa Guadiana. We loved it. We sailed, we swam, we kayaked, we canoed, we watched the night sky and we made occasional sorties to the coast and to Alcoutim. We loved the old mill on the Vascoe and Mertola.

Thank you for a wonderful stay here in Casa Guadiana. We have enjoyed every minute; breathtaking surroundings and a charming and well-kept house.

Real tranquility is rare - you have it here. We've had a wonderfully relaxing time interspersed with exploring the beautiful surroundings. We've swum in the Vascao pools where the girls loved jumping off the rocks and we've explored up-river in the canoes. Picking fresh pomegranates off the tree was a joy. The house is well-equipped and very comfortable. The view of the river is superb - the perfect s

Special interest holidays:

This holiday is ideal for boating people, see details above and at our website;

Casa Guadiana is situated in good walking country. There is a large network of virtually unused minor roads and dirt-tracks as well as footpaths to be explored. Feel free to ask us for advice on routes. Also in Alcoutim there are bikes, motor scooters and off-road buggies for hire in season.

There is a wide variety of birds never or rarely seen in the UK - too many to list here. All the aficionados agree that this is a fine location for bird-watching.

As well as the famous Algarve beaches 45 minutes' drive away there is a blue flag child-friendly, sandy beach in the village of Alcoutim-12 minutes drive away.

Faro airport is 1hr20mins away. There are many cheap flights from all parts of the UK. See their web sites for car hire.

Further Details:

The Guadiana River, for the first 50km upstream from the sea, forms the border between the regions of the Algarve (Portugal) and Andalucia (Spain). In Portugal, the old towns of Mertola, Beja and Serpa are an easy drive away for a day's sightseeing while the glorious beaches of the Algarve can be reached in 3/4 of an hour. In Spain, the old border fishing town of Ayamonte is well worth a visit and fantastic Seville is 2 hours away. The Portuguese village of Alcoutim is the nearest civilisation (about 10 minutes by car or 40 minutes by boat) and here you will find several cafés/restaurants and a well-stocked village shop, or pop across the river by ferry to Sanlúcar in Spain where there are two further shops and a handful of tapas bars.

What a fabulous place. A haven for anyone wanting a get back to nature type of holiday. You cant help but relax and chill out. The finca has all you need for a fantastic holiday including Kayaks, Canadian canoe and lovely sailing dinghy for fun on the river. Amazing countryside and wonderful for birdwatching if you are lucky you will hear the stags roaring.

Blissful seclusion!

What a find!

  • 5 of 5

A real gem. what more can I say. If you are looking for a

"get away from it place" then look no further.

Kate, the owner was there waiting to welcome us upon arrival, giving us advice and a small insight as to what to find in and around Alcoutim. She soon left us allowing us the opportunity to explore and experience life on the river Guadiana on our own.

The house was well equipped and Kate's suggestion to make use of the supermarket in Faro was a good one as Casa Guadiana was a little more remote than I had expected. Thats not to say that you couldn't get essentials in Alcoutim.

The collection of boats had drawn us to this property in the first place and they didn't let us down, every day we sailed, canoed and Kayaked, exploring the many nooks and crannies of the river, one expedition found fresh pomegranates and limes and another day figs. Bird watching was amazing seeing my first ever Hoopee. We were serenaded in the evenings by the magnificant, rutting staggs.

The cheap beer in the little bar in the village was very welcoming after the 2 mile uphill walk, although they spoke as much english as I did Portuguese.None.

Our friends managed to sail their yatch up to Casa Guadiana and spent the night with us.

All in all a smashing place for a getaway from it holiday in a beautiful place .A lilltle piece of paradise. ps you will need a car

Fabulous !

This has got to be one of the most beautifull, quiet, relaxing places to stay in Portugal. We loved each and every moment of our stay here. The villa is clean spacious and very comfortable. Its such an added bonus to have the use of the sailing boat and kyacks to explore the breathtaking Guadiania River. With the beaches only 35minutes away by car, this is the making of a great family holiday. We cant wait to return again next year! The Baker Family.
