Canceled bookings will not receive a refund
What an amazing holiday. The Villa was just as described and perfect for our family to enjoy a fantastic holiday. We had everything you would want in a Villa in a beautiful location. We loved it and will be back one day. The views and sunsets were stunning.
A VERY nice villa in a BEAUTIFUL location with STUNNING views - April 6th-20th stay
The directions given by Mark made the villa very easy to find. It is a beautiful villa, inside and out. The welcome pack on arrival was extremely useful and appreciated. The information pack on the villa and the local area was one of the best we’d received and regularly referred to!
We arrived to unseasonally wet and cold weather, so were very grateful that the villa had good heating!
The weather very quickly dried up and the sun came out, although during the first week we experienced some of the strong winds expected of the island. We managed several breakfasts beside the pool and a couple of BBQs during our stay.
Hubby even took a few dips in the pool... very ‘refreshing’!
The location of the villa is perfect for anyone who, like us, enjoys spectacular views, peace and calm and sheep and goats grazing on the land around the villa. We were also lucky enough to witness the odd navel ship coming into the bay and a number of military jets flying over. A submarine even made a visit!
Within 10-15 minutes drive of the villa there a numerous little villages where you can find all you need for supplies and Tavernas.
If, like us, you’re looking to explore the more traditional Crete, there is much to be discovered by not really having to drive more than 45 minutes or so. We did book an 8 hour ‘Safari’ in a Land Rover and a 4 hour 4x4 buggy ride - would recommend both! A trip to the Botanical Gardens was also a highlight.
Andy, the villa’s manager, was extremely helpful and friendly (even when we needed to call him late at night).
Things to maybe consider:
I always choose accommodation with a washing machine so I can pack sparsely. The machine in the villa, although boasting a very effective wash cycle, had a very poor spin cycle (it still left load very wet, even re-spinning several times). This wouldn’t cause a problem later in the season with higher temperatures, but I did have difficulty getting clothes dry on several occasions. I did note that the dishwasher was brand new and the cooker only a year old, so maybe the washing machine is next on the list.
The only other factor of the villa that stopped us from giving this lovely accommodation a 5* was that we found the sofa in the sitting room uncomfortable and the seating not really sufficient to provide a relaxing setting for 4 adults (maybe the addition of an extra chair or a couple of large bean bags).
All in all, we had a wonderful 2 weeks. Thank you Mark & Jo and Andy & Helen!
Wonderful family holiday villa
We had a wonderful two weeks at the villa mixing our time between lazing around the pool and going on short/long days out.
The villa has plenty of room for all and everything is as described in the Home Away listings. It's about one hour from Chania Airport.. tho for us two hours from Heraklion. Either way, it's not a difficult drive to / from the villa.
Excellent communications from Mark will reassure you that all is in order ahead of your holiday ... and once there Andy & Helen have the villa looking perfect for your arrival.
It's a great location to explore the region around Chania ... and the south coast around Hora Sfakion is about 90 mins away over the mountain pass. But if you just want to sit by the pool, relax and watch the world go very slowly by .... it's great for that too
Thank you for a fantastic holiday... we are more to happy to recommend the villa to others and hope to return another year.
A lovely villa but a long way from any bars or restaurants. The closest place as advertised called st George's retreat had actually been closed for two years.
The villa was very nice and clean, but you had to drive for about twenty minutes to get to plaka.
Unfortunately we wouldn't return to this villa but would return to crete .
Thank you very much for your review, stating that you found the villa to be lovely. This is what the review service is for and will give confidence to others who are considering a stay.
I’m sorry you felt the villa’s location was too remote for your liking, however I would like to say that it is advertised as being “rural” and “away from it all”, which is what the vast majority of our guests appreciate.
Having checked with my local property managers, it would indeed appear that St George’s Retreat Taverna & Bar closed last September but was expected to reopen this season. Unfortunately the Retreat remains closed. I will update the nearest taverna/bar to be in Kokkino Chorio village centre, which is just 1 mile down the road. In Kokkino Chorio you will find two lovely tavernas plus a new coffee shop. You mention Plaka, which offers a greater selection of tavernas, and this can be reached by car in no more than 10 minutes, being 2.5 miles away.
I’m glad you enjoyed Crete and would return to the island and I hope you find somewhere which ticks all your boxes next time.
Villa Maranna was just what we were looking for on our week long stay with another couple. The layout was ideal with an upstairs kitchen and living space leading out onto the balcony and dining area and the 180 degree view of the bay from there. Same view from the deck around the pool too and with the villa next to us being empty during our stay, it was very private.
We made hard work of finding it our first time but after that we had no problem. It was far enough off the beaten track to give us the peace and quiet we were looking for, but was only a few minutes from the town of Plaka where Taki's and Elpi's gave us some of the best meals we had on Crete. We had the barbeque and kitchen to make our dinners occasionally and our breakfasts each morning. It was nice having everything at our disposal and it felt like home in no time. Andy and Helen were super helpful and very generous with their time helping us with any issues we had and giving us information about the area including the bus to and from Samaria Gorge from Almyrida instead of going to Chania. Great place and it's as good as the photos suggest. It exceeded our expectations. Highly recommend .
Keith and Nancy Wood stayed June 9-16 2018
Lovely, good quality accommodation with stunning views
The villa was just as described, with stunning views across the bay, and complete peace and quiet. Everything was good quality and very clean, and we had all that we needed. It is too far to walk to any local amenities, and so a car is essential. The drive to the property is on some very bumpy roads, but this just added to our sense of fun and isolation. The area has plenty of shops, restaurants and nice beaches all within a short drive. We were surprised how windy it was on most days, and that on one day it rained torrentially, but this was early in May. One negative of the property is that, when it was very windy, we had to stay inside with the external shutters closed. Overall we felt very fortunate to have booked the villa & this part of Crete, and will definitely return.
The blue flagged beach resort of Almyrida is approximately 10 minutes drive away from the villa. The stunning beach is very safe for small children. There is also an opportunity for holidaymakers to use the windsurfing school, take out a catamaran or snorkel off the rocks. Kalives is a 20 minutes drive away, with 3 main stretches of beach. There is also a quiet cove only 5 minutes drive from the villa. This offers seclusion and picturesque surroundings, ideal for diving and snorkelling.
Car hire is recommended for our guests. Chania airport is a 30-40 minute drive away, while Heraklion airport is approximately 2 hours drive away. For information on car hire please contact owner.
Kokkino Chorio with 2 tavernas, a coffee shop and a mini market: 5 minute drive/20-25 minutes walk. Plaka for bars and restaurants, mini market: 10 minutes drive. Almyrida with it's blue flag beach and town with large bakery: 12 minutes drive. Kalives town, beach, restaurants: 20 minutes drive. Chania city, harbour, shops, cobbled lanes, market, leather stalls, restaurants and excursions: 35-40 minutes drive.
The Apokoronas region of Crete, where the villa is located, is an ideal spot for walking, bird watching and just general exploring. There are many points of interest including gorges, coves, caves, historical buildings/ruins and museums that illustrate the history of this part of the Mediterranean. Kokkino Chorio, also known as The Red Village, was used in the 1964 film Zorba the Greek. It also plays host to a cave which was used in World War II by the Nazis as an artillery spotting position. From this cave it is possible to see right over to Souda Bay. Souda Bay is home to the Navy and Airbase and we do see some fighter planes flying over the bay on practice days. You can often also see naval frigates and the occasional submarine in the bay. A great day out for the children lies about an hour's drive away at the fabulous water park. THE WEATHER IN CRETE:- APRIL: Spring time in Crete with medium temperatures and low rainfall. Crete is full of wild flowers and it is magnificent. MAY: The weather in Crete becomes warm and sunny. Rain is unlikely to occur past May 10th. The sea is calm and nature is at its best. May is considered the best month for outdoors activities. A jacket will prove useful for the night.
JUNE: Sunny and hot. Time for the beach! JULY & AUGUST: These are the months that the seasonal North winds blow. It is hard to do anything else during these months, than spend the entire day at the beach. Look for a shady place and drink plenty of water. Do not forget your hat and sunscreen. Not the best weather for people who cannot stand high temperatures (30-35 C). SEPTEMBER: Sunny, less windy and slightly cooler. Good for outdoors activities. Get a light jacket for the night, especially if you plan to visit any mountainous areas. OCTOBER: Sunny, very few windy days but some rain will fall, especially in the west part of Crete. The weather is very good for outdoor activities
