Au Forgeron provided everything we needed in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful house, spacious and very well equipped with a pretty garden, good swimming pool and lovely views. A great deal of thought has gone into it and we appreciated the extras especially the bikes and also the support of the local managers. We could have happily spent all our time there but it's in a very interesting region, too.

Perfect stay in the Gers countryside

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay, and found everything as described, and even better! We loved the traditional farmhouse itself, nicely decorated and very well equipped, especially the kitchen. However, as we were blessed with wonderful weather we actually spent most of our time on the wonderful terrace, where we ate all our meals (majority cooked on the great Weber barbeque) listening to birds and smelling the jasmine and lavender. The saltwater pool (apparently salt not chlorine to deter frogs) was lovely and we enjoyed several swims a day. Sadly, we only discovered the extensive network of tracks through the woodland behind the property towards the end of our stay and would have liked to do more bird watching and fossicking had we explored the woods earlier. We also enjoyed our game of petanque every evening at the front of the farmhouse with a glass (or three) of wine. The surrounding market towns are charming, although it did take us a day or two to realise that markets are generally all finished and packed up by midday! Merci beaucoup pour des vacances merveilleuses.

A gorgeous French hideaway

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four had a fantastic week away at Au Forgeron. The owners were extremely helpful and responsive, and managed to arrange a cot for our 2 year old. The house is utterly charming, with lots of French character and a modern, well-equipped, open plan kitchen. We had loads of fun in the saltwater pool; the surrounding garden and woodlands were magical for our two young children (we especially loved the lavender!) If you want peace and quiet then this is the place, but if you want to get out and explore then there's plenty to do. The drive to Pau is well worth it - a beautiful, vibrant city with lots of history and a cosmopolitan vibe. We didn't have the greatest weather, but I think we were very unlucky. However, it didn't stop us enjoying this wonderful area of France. We just wish we could have stayed longer!

Simply to best place I have stayed in France

  • 5 of 5

On arrival we were met by the house managers who were so helpful. The property is beautiful and trust me, the photo's don't do it justice. We love the garden and the pool where my kids spend the majority of their time while at the property. For me having WiFi and a decent bed made all the difference.

The kitchen is fully equipped and a decent BBQ was very welcome.

I cannot recommend this property enough and may well return in a couple of years.

Some places advertise themselve as a 'home from home', Aou Forgeron actually is.

  • 5 of 5

We have recently returned from a 2 week stay in this wonderfully relaxing property. It is a credit to both the owners and the property manager that it has such a calm and relaxing atmosphere. If you are looking for an action packed, 24/7 party venue this may not be for you, although there is plenty to be done with mountain biking, walking and kyaking being on the doorstep. If you want to get away from everything and have some quality down time this has to be top of the list.

This is truly a home from home in that, although the house is very stylish and well funished, it doesn't feel that you are staying in a sterile show home. The owners have obviously put a lot of time and thought into the presentation. Being a bit of a foodie the kitchen was a highlight for me, being well equiped and open plan onto a lovely sitting room. The bedrooms were all very comfortable with plenty of storage so that unpacking didn't leave piles of clothes on chairs. A couple of evenings we made use of the lounge to watch a couple of films via Wi-Fi, which was generally good in the main part of the house.

The local area is pretty rural but the small town of Maseube is only a 10 minute drive away where there is a good supermarket, chemist, bakers and bars/restaurants. The locals are very friendly and laid back and this is definitely a very traditional part of France. A little further afield is Auch which is well worth a visit. Great restaurants in the upper town and the cathederal is well worth a visit for the achitecture as much as any other reason. Even my YouTube and Pokemon Go obsessed son was impressed.

As we travelled with our 2 teenagers we were a little worried about being out in the sticks but the kids loved the pool as well as the abundance of spaces in and around the house where they could chill out. The outside areas are brilliant, we ate all our meals on the covered verandah and the L shaped sofa is an ideal spot to enjoy a glass of wine and the amazing sun sets. The pool is perfect for cooling off as it can get pretty warm during the day, we saw over 30 degs most days, and you can even manage a proper swim.

There really isn't anything we could wish for to make this property a better destination and even an issue with the fridge was quickly resolved. We have now been to France for the last 5 years and this is head and shoulders above the other properties we have stayed in. We will definitely be returning.

Spencer & Amanda.

Car: necessary

Special interest holidays:

One of the most striking aspects of the area is the number and types of birds of prey, which would be excellent for anyone interested in birdwatching. The diversity and sheer scale of this part of France gives artists, photographers, walkers and sports people unlimited opportunity to pursue their interests.

The Atlantic and Mediterranean are around two and a half to three hours drive.

Toulouse is one hour fifteen minutes and there also are flights from many other UK airports. Options include Pau, Biarritz, Carcasonne, and Bordeaux. Car hire is essential.

Masseube is 10 minutes drive; Mirande 15 minutes. The area is surrounded by lots of small towns and villages each with their own activities, fairs, markets etc. The area is world famous for its jazz and country and western festivals in summer at Marciac and Mirande.
