About the property

Cottage in Sleights, Nr. Whitby, North Yorkshire, England - Situated in 'Heartbeat ' Country, Close to the Moors and Coast

'Inkwells' was the original village school and was built in 1834 of local blue bank stone with the traditional herringbone cut. The village of Sleights is ideally placed for exploring the moors and the coast, being only 2.5 miles from Grosmont and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, 4 miles from Whitby. Walks can be taken on to the moors from the door. Goathland, alias 'Aidensfield' in the popular TV series 'Heartbeat' is only a short drive away.

About Beverley Harrison

Originally we bought "Inkwells" as a place to which we could retire in the village where my husband grew up and where his family still live. However, work and family commitments have meant that this branch of the Harrison family has remained in Essex and will do so for the foreseeable future!

Beverley Harrison purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Beverley Harrison chose Sleights

As a family we have spent many happy holidays ourselves in "Inkwells", sometimes bringing friends and family from Essex to explore the local countryside. "Inkwells" is a quirky property, having been converted in the 1970s when the school closed its doors for the last time to a family home and it has reinvented itself a few times since then!

It is a comfortable and homely place for a holiday and most of my bookings come from visitors who return year after year. It appeals to family groups of 3 generations or groups of walkers who I hope find that it is good value. The village of Sleights is a friendly place and it is really handy to have an excellent butcher, baker and well-stocked Spar shop within walking distance. Whitby itself is a delightful seaside town and there is now a Park and Ride facility between Whitby and Sleights. When in Sleights, we always enjoy going to Ruswarp where it is possible to hire a rowing boat and visit the little cafe or the garden centre. Flamingo Land is a good day out for the youngsters and if you like a bit of adventure, there is a superb "Go Ape" course in Dalby Forest and also bike trails. There is always so much to do in the area and never enough time! So, whether you are looking for an active energetic time or just want to chill out, I hope you like "Inkwells" as much as we do.

What makes this cottage unique

On a chilly evening, just light the fire and have a cosy night in.

How about a table tennis tournament?

You could try visiting a local pub on quiz night or, I think, unique to this area, a Dominoes Drive - very sociable and won't make a big dent in your pocket!

Guestbook comments from the owner

a very friendly house

  • 5 of 5

really nice, big house with a lot of space, large kitchen, a small, cozy garden patio for dining, a big lounge to have a drink looking a DVD or sing together to prepare the concerts

We especially appreciated the friendliness of the mother-in-law of the owner who gave us the keys.

Moreover, the geographical location in relation to Whitby where we had to sing is really convenient

We hope to return in July 2017

Good size property in a great location

  • 4 of 5

Had an enjoyable stay at Inkwells. The cottage is very large so well suited to a walking group like ourselves. Once we worked out how to control the thermostat it was easy to warm the house through. Surprisingly there was no wi-fi; would have thought this would be standard in a property of this size. The pub round the corner was great, as was the fish and chips over the road. Got some good walks in as well - the scenery is fantastic. Overall the place is looking a little tired and in need of a freshen up, but for our needs it was fine.

Inkwells is a delightful and spacious cosy home for a winter break shared with family and friends. The kitchen is well equipped with everything to cater for a large group. The log fire supplements the central heating and makes a lovely focal point in the lounge, where there are ample settees for everyone. Sleights is an excellent location for both coast or countryside, with lots of scenic walks.

Both the Parish Church and the Catholic Church are close to 'Inkwells' and a 20 minute walk down through the village will take you to the Methodist Church. The Riverside Garden Centre and tea rooms are well worth a visit. In the nearby village of Ruswarp, you will find Miniature golf, pitch and putt and a centre for hiring rowing boats.
