What our guests are saying:
We had a wonderful time! MMR was perfect for our family... We like to cook our meals and was very surprised how many amenities the kitchen had. Comfortable climate inside the house and the view was fabulous... Great location and everything that you need to feel at home. We highly recommend Maverick Mountain Retreat!!
Not only is MMR a lovely home with gorgeous mountain views, but so much thought has been put into the details and amenities that made our family of 6 feel welcomed and well taken care of. Just little things, like a complimentary bottle of wine to welcome us (and not cheap stuff!), extra food items in pantry, a well-supplied kitchen, extra toiletries in the closet in case we forgot anything (I did) and many snugly throw blankets throughout the house (which we used on the delightfully cool mornings!). The communication with Pam (the owner) was very warm and helpful, with nearly instantaneous replies to my many messages to her! I hope we can plan another trip soon to Pagosa Springs and stay again at Maverick Mountain Retreat.
The views were gorgeous! A rainbow appeared over the mountain view on our last day. A wonderful way to end a wonderful visit. The cabin was perfect for our family of six.
We've tried to think of everything we would want in a vacation home and as such our kitchen has excellent cookware, beautiful yet functional dishes, all kinds of gadgets to make meal prep a breeze, several coffee pots, coffee bean grinder, a griddle, microwave, and more. Granite countertops and custom oak open shelving complete MMR's kitchen, making it a wonderful place to cook, or take a quick drive into town to sample one of Pagosa's many wonderful restaurants. Artful mountain decor and beautiful, comfortable furnishings throughout make this a place you'll want to come to again and again.
New stove with steam clean, new refrigerator, new super quiet dishwasher. We enjoy these things, and think you will, too.
Custom 100-year-old reclaimed barn wood bathroom vanities with copper sinks and waterfall faucets.
Custom flagstone patio with picnic table where you can share a meal while viewing the ever changing, incredible mountain views.
Driveway now has turnaround for two cars to make coming and going even easier! Our garage/driveway will accommodate up to six vehicles. Need to bring your snowmobiles? We have ample room!
NEWLY updated beds in all rooms as of June 2017. We have installed a California King in the master (formerly queen size) and have put queen beds in the other two bedrooms (formerly full size.) We want our guests to have both a comfortable night's rest and plenty of wiggle room. Our beds make for lovely sleep in any season.
High end microfiber sheets and layered quilts/blankets available for any season you choose to visit. Two bedrooms feature TVs and the third has a cozy chair for curling up with a good book.
Full laundry room with new equipment for your convenience. In our two-car garage we also have an additional refrigerator so that you may stock additional food and drink for your visit.
Grill for outdoor use. Cook up a meal and enjoy it on the deck or the picnic table while seeing the magnificent mountain views or perhaps watching wildlife as you eat and relax on our acreage.
If you want a beautiful, quiet mountain retreat with easy access to town and more activities than you can fit into your vacation, this is your place!

About Pamela K. Burback
Steve and Pam have been married for 31 years, have four children and one grandchild with another on the way. We currently reside in the Midwest but have lived all over the United States. Besides God and our family, we love weather (Steve is a meteorologist), walking/hiking, tennis, reading, gardening, music and travel. And we also think chocolate should have its own vitamin status. Steve calls it Vitamin CH. David and Becky are the co-owners of this property with Pam and Steve. They have two beautiful daughters and two dogs...a Basset named LuLu, and a 16 year old mixed breed named Pickles. Becky and Lu are a certified animal assisted therapy team, so Lu gets to visit the elementary school where Becky works as a secretary. David is a proud American small business owner for over 30 years, making outdoor electrical signs. We both love golf! We currently reside in Oklahoma.
Pamela K. Burback purchased this House in 2015
Why Pamela K. Burback chose Archuleta County
Our dear friends (and co-owners) Dave and Becky Bish had the idea of purchasing a vacation home and as they had visited Pagosa before, we booked a trip to see homes. After seeing many, many properties we were about to end our trip without a purchase when we arrived at a beautiful property on 3.5 acres with awesome mountain views. We knew at once this was the place. We got a contract, closed as soon as we could, and spent three trips and untold man (and woman!) hours transforming our home into Maverick Mountain Retreat. The things that drew us to settle on a purchase here: A lovely, quaint town with some of the nicest people we've ever met, incredible mountain views, the San Juan River running right through town, forest all around, hiking trails, abundant wildlife (Becky is crazy about bears, and yes, they do roam our property on occasion) and wonderful restaurants with great customer service! Hiking the area is an amazing experience and the smell of hot pines in the summer and alternately, viewing the snowy mountains right outside our home in the winter are just some of the many reasons we love MMR/Pagosa!
What makes this House unique
During our trip to purchase a vacation home, we became convinced that a comfortable yet beautiful home with mountain views was at the top of our wish list. With Maverick Mountain Retreat, we got that AND 3.5 acres of forest! Even better, we love the setting - it's quiet and peaceful at MMR, yet town is a mere 5 miles away and Wolf Creek can be accessed without the need to drive through the town of Pagosa itself, as our home is on the east side of town. MMR has an open floor plan that appealed to us as well. Mountain views from master bedroom, living and dining rooms, large deck, as well as the kitchen make it a place we never want to leave. Wolf Creek Snow Area boasts the most snow in America with reasonable rates for skiing. The deepest hot springs in the world are right here in Pagosa.

Absolute Perfection-slice of Heaven
MMR is a fabulous place to stay. We had two adults and four teenagers and everyone had plenty of room to both be together and separate if needed for a break and quiet. The property is amazing with trees and mountains and the view off the back porch of the San Juan Mountains is spectacular. The home has everything that you need and we did not want for anything. It is cozy and warm and the owners Pam and Becky could not have been more hospitable than if they were staying with us. They answered all questions and gave above and beyond information and made sure we had everything we needed. I highly recommend this home and this location. We could not have been closer to town and closer to the slopes in this perfect place. We were first timers for skiing and we found a gem in MMR.
Lisa, thank you so much for your kind words! I'm so glad you found MMR as beautiful and as convenient as we do! Hard to leave such a gorgeous, peaceful place that is so close to everything! We agree about those views -- they were what captured our hearts when we first visited the property.
Thank YOU so much for your extra diligent care of our home! Our housekeeper was so blessed by your extra cleaning, thoughtfulness and generosity! She works hard for us and we appreciate her; so glad that you did too!
Please come again anytime! It was delightful to host you!
My wife had a six night stay and we loved the house. I normally have a bit of difficulty getting any decent amount of sleep in a new bed, but the beds here are very comfortable with great blankets, so sleep wasn't an issue at all.
The view off the back side of the house is beautiful and there was no noise around, so we were able to sit in the mornings and enjoy our coffee listening to the wind blow through the trees. We enjoyed having quality dish-wear available to us, as we prep all of our own meals and didn't eat out once during our stay. There is a mud room when entering the front door as well as a laundry room when entering from the garage, so either way you enter the house you are able to take off dirty or wet items and keep the house dry and clean.
One thing I would like to point out to perspective guests, if staying during winter months, 4-wheel drive may be needed to get out of the driveway if there is snow, due to a slight hill leading up to the road. I wouldn't let it deter you from staying here however, as the house is in a cul-de-sac and the road is level, so you could always park on the road and walk only 50 feet or so to the front door.
Collin, thank you so much for your thoughtful review! Really happy to hear that the beds were comfortable; we do enjoy both the mattresses and the Cuddleduds blankets (and various throws) during our stays!
Having a well-stocked kitchen was a top priority for us and I'm so happy to learn that you enjoyed cooking there. We were especially happy to install a new stove and new dishwasher just last year that makes the kitchen even more enjoyable!
We appreciate that you took the time to utilize the mud and utility rooms; we find that a wonderful bonus to MMR, and it really does help keep the carpets/flooring clean, so thank you!
You are right that anyone coming to Pagosa during winter should consider something like front-wheel drive, but also know that we enlarged the driveway with a turn-around spot at the end (left side of house) so that guests can just drive forward out of the drive, rather than backing out. In addition, we keep sand and kitty litter in the garage, so I hope you were able to utilize those things. Our maintenance man does a fantastic job of plowing, but snow is snow, and it's part of the Pagosa adventure!
Thanks again for trusting us with your lodging needs, and please do come again!
for Steve, Dave and Becky
Quiet, relaxing, restorative, regenerative
We, my husband and I, are high energy people. We work hard and push ourselves without taking much down time. Our week at Maverick Mountain Retreat was just the prescription we needed to get in touch with ourselves and each other. The slow pace of life in the woods was wonderful. There is zero ambient noise. No trains, no traffic, no neighbor kids, no lawn crews to wake us too early. The wind in the trees was the extent of disturbance if you discount the lovely birds in the trees. Sitting on the deck and gazing across the valley to the mountains one could not help but relax on a very deep level. The house itself was perfect. We felt right at home and had every convenience we needed at our fingertips. I like to cook, it is relaxing to me. I cooked and never lacked a gadget to create tasty and healthy meals for my husband. When I didn't want to cook, there were great choices just ten minutes away. All were reasonably priced and healthy. We saw turkey and deer besides the birds. The cabin has books to identify the wildlife and I enjoyed watching new to me birds. Because of the cabin, I now want an immediate hot water heater. Showers were the best. My husband loved them. I want to take our family there one day to share this wonderful place/experience with them. Thanks so much Pam/Steve and Becky/Dave. You are the best!
Melissa, thank you so much for your kind words about our home! It gives us great joy to know that our guests are able to relax and refresh, and to know that we've helped in some small way. Outfitting the kitchen was such fun and we too, are delighted with the shower -- can't beat instant hot water that never runs out!
And those mountains -- every time we are here we never want to leave. The quiet space and the quick drive to down makes it ideal for us and I'm so glad it served you well.
We would be delighted to have you back again and please do bring family!
Relaxing retreat with stunning mountain views
The best part of our whole stay was the gorgeous mountain views. It made me want to live here! The glow of the sunset light on the mountains was my favorite time of day. I loved sitting on the large back deck and enjoying those views. Watching the deer and cute squirrels traverse the property was fun too. The place was well stocked with everything we needed. My family especially loved the breakfast items provided so that we could have a hot breakfast of eggs, bacon, and biscuits our first morning without having to go to the store. My sons are collectors of nature items and loved all the nature décor that was throughout giving the place a true cabin feeling. We also appreciated the games and books to keep the kids entertained. Pamela was very easy to communicate with and ensured all our needs were met. The location was perfect for us – less than 10 minutes to downtown but it feels like you are away from it all. We also liked being close to Echo Lake, Rocky Mountain Wildlife Park and several beautiful fall color drives. We would definitely stay here again upon returning to Pagosa Springs!
Lisa, thank you for your kind words! So happy that you enjoyed the mountain views, the proximity to town, the wildlife, games, and especially that you enjoyed our newly launched First Morning Breakfast. We realized that with many guests arriving in the evening, providing breakfast makes it so much easier to start a lovely vacation with additional time to shop for needed groceries. It's our desire to help guests have the best experience possible and we certainly hope you will return -- our housekeeper said that you left our house in great shape -- thank you!
CONVENIENT AND COMFORTABLE
We loved this home from the minute we stepped inside. I'm often uneasy in a strange place the first night of a vacation but this place was so comfortable that I felt much more at ease. The setting in the pines felt secluded and yet we were just 10 minutes from town to enjoy the hot springs, restaurants and shops. The kitchen was incredibly well stocked and I especially loved the Keurig coffee maker. For those who prefer it there was also a French press. Every gadget we could think of was available and there was a nice set of pans for cooking although we were there to relax so we didn't cook much.
The sofas were very comfortable for relaxing and the beds were great. Two bathrooms added to the convenience. The instant hot water was a treat when showering since didn't have to worry about running out of hot water or wait for it to make it's way to each shower. The nice washer and dryer set was great for washing swimsuits after the sulfur hot springs pools. I noticed boot jacks in the entryway for skiers to dry their boots and plenty of large hooks for hanging ski wear or jackets.
During this trip we were set to miss the premiere of our favorite cable TV show after a long hiatus. Nope! Didn't miss it because Chromecast was available so we enjoyed it on the big screen right there at the house. It was great!
Don't hesitate to rent this home because you'll love it. We're super picky and we thought it was the bomb. From the views off of the back deck (and from the living room) to the well stocked kitchen it did not disappoint.
I'm so happy to hear that our cabin in the woods gave you such comfort! Making guests happy is truly what makes us happy, so we are delighted that you enjoyed our home!
Chromecast is just one of the things we decided guests would like to enhance a stay, so I'm glad you were able to make full use of this feature with your favorite show!
We continue to think of ways to make our kitchen even better, but it's great to hear that you enjoyed it so much, as do we!
Comfortable furniture was a priority for us as we furnished MMR. We love it that guests can relax and enjoy the wildlife from the expansive windows in the living room. :-)
When we first saw this home two years ago, we were immediately excited about so many things -- the incredible mountain views, the well-built structure (one-foot thick walls), the proximity to town and to Wolf Creek -- it had it all for us. So glad you enjoyed Maverick Mountain Retreat as well, and thank you so much for your kind words.
Lovely Mountain Home
My family of four stayed at MMR in July and found it to be beautiful and comfortable. The three bedrooms and two bathrooms are all on the same floor and close to one another, which was great for traveling with children. The owners are responsive and thoughtful, they definitely take pride in their home and care about their guests. I highly recommend this property.
Sara, we are so pleased your family enjoyed Maverick Mountain Retreat! One of the things that we were looking for was a home on one level both for young families and for older people as well, and to get those awesome mountain views and close proximity to everything Pagosa offers was total bonus!
I hope you will come again and thank you for taking good care of our home -- our housekeeper was happy with your care!
