About Elaine

We have visited France for many years and fell in love with this area and hope in the future to be able to spend more time enjoying the french way of life..

Why Elaine chose Lot

As soon as we saw La Grange we knew we would buy it. The views are amazing, difficult to capture as they are panoramic. The barn is spacious, a great conversion with huge picture windows & triple patio doors so you can appreciate the views. The location is ideal, so peaceful you have that get away from it all feel, yet you can walk to the village and Gourdon is also close by. We love this region of France & never tire of the beautiful yellow stone houses, scenic countryside, dramatic cliff hanging bastide towns & colourful markets. Renowned for its gastronomy, there are many great restaurants serving local produce, so if you are “foodies” you will not be disappointed. The winters are short, summers are full of sunshine and spring/autumn days are warm & pleasant.

What makes this barn unique

The benefits of La Grange are numerous and we have received some wonderful feedback from holiday makers who enjoy the tranquillity and beautiful surroundings. They like the fact that they can walk to the village for a meal without having to get in the car and for buying those bbq essentials and fresh bread and croissants. The views from the garden are amazing, perfect for those alfresco meals. Relax and watch the sunset over a glass of wine and as night falls you may even be lucky and see shooting stars! The accommodation is tastefully furnished, and the light airy feel downstairs is enjoyed by our guests. Being on the border of the Lot and Dordogne there is so much to do on the doorstep or within a short drive for couples and families alike.

Beautiful Gite, relaxing holiday

  • 4 of 5

We have not been to this area of France for many years and it was great to be back. We really enjoyed our stay at La Grange, everything was as described in the advert. We really enjoyed the views and the wildlife – lots of birds, butterflies and even a red squirrel. Great to be close to the village and to have a choice of restaurants, we enjoyed the one by the lake.

We had a great day out canoeing down the Dordogne and took the owner’s recommendation of the trip down the river past the chateaux which was really beautiful. We visited Domme, Sarlat and Rocamadour as well as Cougnac Caves which all the family enjoyed. Sarlat particularly pretty in the evening when the gas lamps are on – spectacular!

Enjoyed the local produce from the farmers markets which were well worth a visit

Fantastic Holiday

  • 5 of 5

La Grange was an excellent base to explore the Lot Department, as there are so many attractions to see all within a short drive.

The cliff hanging Rocamadour, the beautiful town of St. Cirq Lapopie, Domme, Sarlat, Castlenau, Beynac and Martel. Gourdon is 5 minutes in the car and easy for restaurants and shopping and you can walk to the village restaurants in under 10 minutes – great to leave the car behind.

We were amazed at the stunning location and loved the character and charm of the barn it is a wonderful rural retreat, so relaxing just chilling and reading in the garden listening to the birds, utterly peaceful – a great place to return to at the end of the day. The property was well equipped and very clean – exactly as described.

We took bikes and enjoyed some local cycle rides - there is a purpose made cycle path from which goes to Castlenau where you can picnic by the river. It was easy to follow and it was good to work off some of those delicious french pastries!

We went end of June/early July and it was beautiful weather and warm enough to sit out and enjoy the long evenings – sunbathing til 7.30 pm! We had a fabulous holiday and were sad to leave – would definitely recommend it to anyone.

One of the best places we have stayed

  • 5 of 5

One of the best places we have stayed – superb views and a great location. The barn was perfect for our needs and when we stepped through the door we knew we would have a lovely holiday and we felt relaxed from go. It was great to be able to walk to the village restaurants which were excellent and we really enjoyed the local farmers market in Gourdon. We also stumbled upon a French evening market with food being served on long tables, which was a real chance to soak up a slice of French life – not to be missed if you get the chance.

We had not been to this area before, it really is very scenic and all the family thoroughly enjoyed it. Great to have picnics by the Dordogne River and soak up the sun while the children enjoyed canoeing and swimming in the Dordogne. We also found a great beach area at Grolejac which was ideal for swimming. Other highlights included the caves at Cougnac and Pech Merle and a visit to Domme where there is a fantastic restaurant which overlooks the Dordogne Valley – well worth a visit. The owners had provided plenty of information on places to visit and local recommendations which was really helpful. It was an easy drive to Sarlat, Rocamadour and the Lot and Cele Valley.

A very enjoyable family holiday and a wonderful part of France – thank you.

Exceeded expectations

  • 5 of 5

La Grange exceeded our expectations in terms of the property and the tranquility . We had great weather so were able to fully take advantage of the sun loungers and the garden kept the sunshine until the evening which was great for sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine.

The local village was quite lively and easily walkable and we enjoyed the café’s and sampling the restaurants in Gourdon , which were very reasonably priced. The farmers market in Gourdon and Sarlat were well worth going to – wonderful cherries, strawberries and local cheeses. Sarlat’s old town is really beautiful, just like stepping back in time. The window displays in the patisseries are like works of art and the cakes and almond croissants were just too tempting.

There were lots of tourist information leaflets provided and we really did not have enough time to fit everything in – we wished we had booked another week. We particularly enjoyed visiting the chateaux at Castelnau and Beynac, visiting St.Cirque La Poppie and would recommend the boat trip on a gabarre down the Dordogne. The bastide villages in the Dordogne were all so pretty.

The owners website was very informative and reflected the property well . We received a travel pack 2 weeks before and phone call from the owner to check receipt and to confirm the arrangements. All in all a good choice and a lovely area of France, one of the best we have visited.

Wonderful views, great location

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday at La Grange, the property was just as described and was spacious, spotlessly clean with wonderful views all around. A great location, we could walk to the village restaurants - the food was great - a choice of a la carte or more traditional french cusine. Also handy to have local shops.

We enjoyed many bbqs in the garden as the weather was wonderful for our stay. Other highlights were canoeing on the Dordogne, visiting La Roque Gageac, Domme and Rocamadour.

The owners responded quickly to our emails, and all booking information and directions were clear. We would definitely recommend and look forward to a return visit in future years.

There is a local swimming lake close by, and the Dordogne river has 'beach areas' where you can swim or picnic on the banks. There are many opportunities for canoeing on the Dordogne, where you can take a picnic and spend the day on the river, taking in the beautiful chateaux as you go! For the less energetic there are pleasure boat rides on various stretches of the river. There is also a water park at Souillac which is great for all the family. Gourdon also has an open air public swimming pool.

A car is essential. Nearest airports are: Brive (Dordogne), Limoges, Rodez, Bergerac, Bordeau and Toulouse.

The village Le Vigan is a short walk has 3 restaurants, a medieval church, thriving shops where you can get fresh bread, croissants & excellent cakes! The butcher is very good for spur of the minute bbq's. The local town of Gourdon has an unspoilt medieval character with many picturesque streets & squares. Here you will find many great restaurants, attractive cafes, & weekly farmers markets where you can buy regional specialties. During the summer months there are various fetes and festivals.

Further Details:

There are far too many beautiful places to mention, so here's a few of our favourites: Sarlat is a must, especially on market day. Step back to medieval times as you wander around the old lanes & courtyards & admire the architecture. In summer there are often musicians & street entertainers. Roque Gageac, positioned right on the river the honey coloured houses shelter under the cliff and take on a beautiful glow as the sun sets. Climb up between the traditional Perigordian houses, looking down over the roof tops to the river below. Enjoy a relaxing boat trip down river on a gabare. Domme - a very pretty bastide town. Enter through the old town wall gateways, and climb the narrow streets up to the most amazing view point over the river Dordogne, looking across to La Roque Gageac and Beynac.

Rocamadour one of the most visited places in France. Here the houses cling dramatically to the rock face. There are wonderful views over the rooftops from the summit of the cliff. Tread in the footsteps of the pilgrims up to the Church which is built into the rock face or dine alfesco and enjoy the views. Beynac - the imposing chateau Beynac is perched on the top of the cliff and has to be seen. There are fabulous views of the Dordogne valley from the castle. St-Cirq-Lapopie - built up on a cliff overlooking the river lot. Very pretty historic village with narrow cobbled streets to explore with little craft shops tucked away between the quaint houses. It is a very pretty drive down to St Cirq, through lovely little hamlets and villages. Caves: There are many caves in the Region including: Pech Merle, Lascaux II, Grottes de Cougnac & Gouffre de Padirac. There is plenty do do for families with children of all ages including: water parks, canoeing, bike riding, monkey forest & reptile land, near Rocamadour, caves to visit, prehistoric parks, and tree top adventure parks.

We provide local guidebooks and T.I. leaflets containing information on places to visit. See photo gallery.
