Shirley McCann purchased this house in 2003

Why Shirley McCann chose Pontivy area

After several years holidaying in Central Brittany we had decided to take the plunge and buy a property, initially as a holiday home. We liked Pontivy for its human scale and the fact that it had all the amenities our family would need.

The decision to take early retirement meant we could move over sooner than we had anticipated.

The property we found was ideally placed by the Nantes Brest canal yet within easy reach of the village, Pontivy and schools for our youngest.

The village school welcomed him at the age of five and he picked up French apparently without effort. He is now in his first year at a college in Rennes having gained his Baccalaureat in 2016!

Have a look at our Facebook page for pictures and news of what's going on in our lovely corner of Brittany.

What makes this house unique

Our lovely neighbour offered us the chance to buy the house that is now Ty Louisette. (Named in her honour).

It took a few years to develop into the lovely welcoming property it now is and being so close to home it is easy to look after and to be on hand for guests.

Shirley has continued the studies in textile art she started when still in the UK and can now offer courses or day workshops. see her Facebook page for news of her textile art practice.

She also continues to play bridge and would be able to find players to allow guests to join in a game if they wished.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Spacious & comfortable base for our week of contemporary art. Did all the Art dans le Chapelles circuits and revisited Domaine du Kerguehennec. Delightful.

A unique place to stay, welcoming, extremely comfortable, fantastically furnished to a beautiful standard. An amazing place to relax and unwind and enjoy the French countryside. This property - 5 stars. Can't wait to return.

Really enjoyed our stay in fantastic surroundings. House was perfect, couldn't fault it - you've thought of everything! Thanks.

Absolutely first class, everything thought out & delivered to a beautiful standard. We'll be back.

Fantastic gite - very nice and roomy. he garden was fantastic for the kids - they enjoyed the games as well - nice touch. Great location - we really enjoyed swimming in, and walking round the lake. The beaches at Carnac and Quiberon were great. We really had a "tres bonne vacance".

Fantastic gite! Completed to a very high standard. Lovely location right beside the canal.

Special interest holidays:

We can find partners for bridge players for sociable, informal sessions. Pontivy also has a well established bridge club.

Textile art courses can be arranged with the City and Guilds qualified owner. A range of needlecraft and textile techniques, traditional and modern, can be learned. Courses would be from 09.00 to 13.00 each day and would take place in the gite itself leaving you the afternoon to explore the area. Cost would be an extra 15 euros per person per day. Please enquire for more details and to discuss techniques you'd like to cover. Full day courses are available at 25 euros per person per day to include most materials. See links to Shirley J McCann's website from the Ty Louisette site for an idea of what can be covered. English speaking stained glass courses are available in a nearby studio and can be pre-booked on demand.

There are popular lakeside beaches at Lac de Guerledan with fresh water swimming, canoeing, cafés and restaurants which are 20 minutes drive to the north. Fine sandy beaches and the mysterious "alignements" of standing stones along Brittany's south coast are 45 minutes drive away and the more rugged north coast is approximately an hour and a quarter's drive. The celebrated Mont Saint-Michel, a UNESCO world heritage site is within reach for an enjoyable daytrip.

Dinard airport is 1 hr 30 drive. Rennes 1 hr. Brest 1 hr 45. Lorient 1 hr.

Saint Malo ferry port is 1 hr 40 away and Roscoff 2 hrs. Cherbourg is 3 hrs 30 and Calais 6 hrs.

Saint Gérand village is 2km away and has a general store and bakery. Pontivy is 6km away. The town is part Napoleonic and part medieval and boasts a magnificent 15th C castle. Vannes with its walled medieval heart, shops and picturesque old port is one hour away. Auray's beautiful harbour with restaurants is 50 mins drive. Rennes can be reached in 1 hour. Lorient with wartime submarine pens is 1 hour away. Popular Interceltique festival takes place here each summer. See links page on website.

Further Details:

Pontivy 6km away, is the nearest town and has good shopping including three big supermarkets on the outskirts and two smaller ones in the centre. It has numerous banks, a large post office and a hospital.

The tourist office is uniquely located on a barge on the canal near to the central town square and car park. Pontivy is classed as a "ville fleurie" and its floral displays are outstanding.

Pontivy's 15th C castle is certainly worth a visit as is the castle in picturesque Josselin a 40 minute drive away.

Brittany is still a rural region and there are great opportunities for bird watching and walking. We see buzzards circling regularly and kestrels are common. Occasionally white egrets fish in the canal and herons are frequent visitors. Grebes and kingfishers love the watery hunting grounds in the area. Fishing (with a permit) is possible on the Nantes Brest Canal that runs within 100 metres of the gite. Bicycles can be hired from Pontivy to enable you to make the most of the easy towpath route to neighbouring towns and villages.

Horse riding is available 20 mins away.

Excellent leisure pool at Loudeac, 20 mins drive. New regulations have brought it into line with many French pools so that loose fitting swimming shorts are NOT allowed. The brand new pool in Pontivy itself opens on 2nd June 2013. With leisure pools, lanes and two flumes it promises to be an excellent facility.

La Forêt de Broceliande is nearby with extensive walks and its Arthurian connections. Closer still is the forest at Gueltas with good walks and wildlife. Swallowtail butterfies are seen here in the summer.

Courses in textile art, embroidery and stained glass can be arranged upon request for an additional charge. Contact the owners for details.

Bridge sessions can be arranged for afficionados.
