The Lone Barn (originally a farm) is made up of the large 16th Century Thatched Barn, the main house, where Paul and Mel live used to be 3 farm workers cottages, and the Cottage offered to guests was once the stables to the farm. Our Stables cottage is all on ground floor level, other than the children's den in the attic (decorated with an alpine feel!) which is accessed by a spiral staircase from the double bedroom and both rooms share the bathroom which is directly off the double bedroom. The twin bedroom has an ensuite shower room, and decorated with bits and pieces from our travels. The social open plan living area offers spacious living accommodation with original beams, wood burner, and handmade oak and painted kitchen and solid oak flooring, with 2 settees and 2 easy chairs there is plenty of comfortable sitting area for everyone The bedrooms are spacious and the beds are made up with deep mattresses and high quality linen from The White Company and the bathrooms with the beautiful natural Bramley products to indulge in.
We have thought of everything you might need to make your stay easy and more than comfortable and it is really well equipped in all the areas.
Directly outside the cottage on the courtyard side is an area for alfresco dining and the other side of the cottage benches to sit in the evening sun with a G&T. There is a gas BBQ for guests to use by pre arrangement. Our whole garden is for guests to use and why not find a corner to while away some time reading a book under trees, supping your wine on the swing seat or kicking a football about with the children. Even wander through the cutting patch and take in all the glorious smells. Our hard tennis court gets lots of use from our guests, we supply balls and a few racquets (not Wimbledon quality!!), but please play in trainers rather than hard soled shoes. For walking and biking enthusiasts, there are picturesque walks of varying lengths from the door on the extensive bridleways/footpaths that surround Lone Barn. The South Downs are only 1½ miles away and we are lucky enough to have the Queen Elizabeth Country Park (4miles) which offers extensive mountain biking and walking trails and a brand new assault course. We even have a cycle wash station, secure cycle lock up, cycle racks and space in our thatched barn for cycle repairs, making it a perfect place to use as a cycle or walking base. South coast beaches, sailing, horse racing at Fontwell, Goodwood and the Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival and its racecourse. There is a local open air swimming pool and an indoor pool in Petersfield. Hampshire is often missed on every ones journey as they head to the Ports for a foreign holiday. One forgets how much this stunning county has to offer. Winchester, the glorious old Capital of England, steeped in history. For literary enthusiasts, Jane Austen's home in nearby Alton and Gilbert Whites House in Selborne make for great day out. Trips to the Isle of Wight are easy with a choice of crossings available. Not to be missed is the Historic Portsmouth Dockyard, where several days can be enjoyed on the coast on and off the water.
Chichester another beautiful old cathedral town is only 25 minutes away and why not dip to the coast on the way back to some pretty little harbour villages. Petersfield railway station has great links to London for day trips and if you chose to come without your own car we can arrange to collect you from Petersfield, Havant or Cosham stations.
Goodwood for their Festival of Speed, Goodwood Revivial and Glorious Goodwod are also within easy reach.
We love to get out ourselves to cycle and walk the lanes and many paths of the county and are very happy to plan routes with our guests and suggest some lovely stops for lunch/coffee or simply to take in the views. We are close to the Southdowns Way, and are happy to arrange pick ups and drops offs.
We run a Pop up coffee stop in the thatched barn on the last weekend of each month, so another opportunity to take in the delight of the barn and indulge in some homemade cake and delicious coffee. We offer bed and breakfast accommodation too in our main house, so if you are needing additional accommodation or want friends to meet with you for a night or two, then why not use the rooms on offer.
We like to welcome guests at the cottage ourselves if possible and then we can help with any questions guests might have about the area or the cottage. A homemade cake and bottle of fizz are waiting for your arrival.
