About Graham Eves
I live between the UK and France with my partner and two daughters. I spend about a third of my year in France travelling back and forth every few weeks where I am lucky enough to have plenty to do and a wonderful place to stay and probably the best cycling on the planet.
Graham Eves purchased this Farmhouse in 1993
Why Graham Eves chose Escala
We have always loved France and especially the mountains. We spent 3 years looking all over the country and eventually settled on this area for the peace and quiet and easy access to some of the best walking, cycling and skiing in Europe. After looking at dozens of other properties we finally settled on this house in particular for its location and views.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
We have developed our holiday gite business over the last 10 years. We have also shared and continue to share some thoroughly relaxing and memorable holidays with our extended families and groups of friends at different times of the year. The skiing is amazing just up the road at St Lary and we have friends that have skied in the Alps for many years that now prefer to return here each winter. The same can be said for our cycling friends and cycle tour organisers that love the challenges of the Tour de France routes and enjoy exploring the quiet, scenic, traffic free lanes that characterise this whole area.

A lovely house in the most incredible setting.
We were a family party of 6, ranging from 9 to 71. We all enjoyed it for different reasons. The kids (young & old) loved the games room & pool. The adults were very content to sit outside admiring the view and the local produce, with occasional dips in the pool and the hot tub.
It isn't the smartest venue but it doesn't pretend to be; it is immensely charming and the décor doesn't matter when the view is as stunning as it is.
Graham couldn't have been a better host: charming, helpful, flexible and funny.
I would recommend this for any gathering of friends and/or family who want a place that they can completely relax
Pyrenees paradise - we keep coming back!
The Escala Gite is one of our favourite destinations and we continue to come back each year during May, both for group cycling holidays, and more recently in June for a family holiday with our young children.
Over the years we have seen the Farmhouse occupancy grow as further extensions have been developed, allowing us to host cycling groups of 24 guests (with extra capacity still available). Due to the expansive layout of the gite, multiple living areas and generous numbers of toilets and bathrooms, the place never feels crowded at all, everyone has plenty of personal space, as well as the opportunity to socialise The gite has two independent fully functional kitchens which can comfortably seat 30+ guests during the cooler evenings, however during the warmer evenings dining outside with the view of the mountains is far preferred!
The gite’s location is absolutely perfect for cyclists, with easy and direct access to number of famous valleys. The base of Col d’Aspin is only a 23km valley ride from the gite, Hourquette is 28km and the major climbs of St Lary only 36kms. Alternatively Luchon and its famous climbs is only a 50km valley ride away. The hardest decision we have each day is trying to decide which legendary Col to cycle! After a long day of riding, both the outdoor pool and hot tub are very welcoming!
There are also a number of running and walking trails in the area in stunning surroundings with beautiful scenery. If you’d prefer to have a more relaxing break, Edenvik thermal spa is only a 15 minute drive away and the golf course is only 5mins.
The site is easily accessible from the A64, and while Lannemezan is only a 5 min drive (to all major supermarkets), the gites location is very private and secluded, with only the odd vehicle or tractor passing the lane it is situated on.
Our two young children love visiting the site - there is so much for them to do both onsite form playing outside, in the pool, in the games area or walking through he nearby fields to the local village - it is children’s paradise and very safe haven. The local Demi Lune park is a must visit for anyone with children!
Graham is a fantastic host and nothing is too much of an ask for him. He is great to communicate with, speaking both English and French.
The gite is a great getaway from the world - it’s rustic charm is authentic and quirky.
We’re looking forward to returning next year already!
Beautiful location with stunning views
We were there to ride our bikes so the location and facilities were perfect,we've stayed before so no surprises and it’s quite rustic and quirky which I like.
If you are Cycling or doing outside activities this is perfect , if you like things a bit sparkly and dainty then probably not for you.
Big bedrooms good kitchen facilities, plenty of showers and toilets and loads of comfy seating . Great outside space for the good weather. Really nice swimming pool and hot tub for post cycling.
One thing Graham needs to fix is the Wi-fi which is only just better than dial up...and certainly can’t cope with multiple occupancy.not good enough for the modern needs and you would expect this for a premium priced property.
Hi John, thank you for your kind words and so glad you all had such a good time again.
Really pleased the weather and the cycling went so well.
I have just had the France Telecom engineer out and he found a problem on the incoming connection which he has now fixed so thanks for letting us know.
Just watched a Netflix movie on our UK account. For bigger groups we still recommend using and sharing 4G when possible which has a very good signal here.
Anyway, really great having you and your friends stay again and look forward to seeing you all again soon - maybe for the Tour de France next year which comes nearby - 4 stages this year including a first time up Col de Portet just up the valley near Saint Lary.
A great house in a great location, we had 18 adults and 3 children and plenty of room.
We stayed in Sept 17', a group of 18 friends with 3 children. The house was ideal for our group, had everything we needed and was in a great location. We could walk through quiet roads to the nearest town, or it was a 5 minute drive to a supermarket. Thoroughly recommended.
Bel endroit, très calme
Nous avons passé avec un groupe d'ami un excellent séjour.
De plus, la vue est très belle.
Le propriétaire est très sympathique et donne beaucoup d'informations.
Lovely large gite with beautiful views
We had a lovely time in this property and the whole group very much enjoyed watching the sun setting from the hot tub and using the pool. The accommodation was very flexible and worked well for our mixed group of children and adults. The owner was really helpful and although a few parts of the property were a bit tired I know he is aiming to rectify this in the near future. The week's highlight was watching the tour details France pass 1km away from the property.
Special interest holidays:
This property is perfectly located for cycling groups with instant acces to the mountains and a number of stages of the Tour de France including Col D'Aspen and Col du Tourmalet.
Serious about cycling? We now have 6 Giant Defy 5 cycles available for hire at a small weekly rate - please enquire for details.
We are in the perfect locations for a base for cycling holidays.
Feedback from a group of 10 cyclists earlier this year: 'The accommodation worked well for our group, and we all agreed it would be good to use it again on our next trip to the area. You have a great character property in a terrific position - Paul
The beaches of Biarritz are 2 hours away on the Atlantic coast and can make an interesting, contrasting day out or even the very pretty seaside town of Collioure a 3 hour drive in the opposite direction on the Mediterranean.
Nearest airport is Tarbes 30 minutes.
The airport at Tarbes/Lourdes is 30 minutes and Toulouse is about an hour away.
If you are flying then a hire car is recommended. You can get a ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao and then its about a 4 hour drive. The drive down from Calais takes about 10-11 hours.
Nearest village - La Barthe De Neste (2 minute drive or a 20 minute walk). Nearest town - Lannemezan (5 minute drive). Lourdes - 30 minutes. St Lary - 35 minutes. Tarbes - 20 minutes. Toulouse - 1 hour. Biarritz - 2 hours. Spain - 1 hour.
La Barthe De Neste is a bustling village with a brand new tourist information centre where you can find information on the whole region. The village also has a number of small shops, a bakery, bar, cafe, pharmacy, restaurant, hairdressers and a fantastic artisan chocolatery.
There is an excellent sports centre with gymnasium and superb tennis facilities, including both indoors and outdoor clay courts. La Barthe De Neste also has a very popular local market every Sunday.
Lannemezan (5 minute drive) is principally a small market town, but its situation guarantees the visitor some beautiful scenery and walking routes including 400 hectares of woodland. There are a dozen restaurants and lots of amenities (supermarkets, banks, post office, hospital, doctor, chemist etc). There are 2 lakes - La Plantade where fishing is possible and the leisure lake la Demi-Lune where there are pedalos, ducks and swans to keep the children amused.
Lannemezan has a great market every Wednesday and is a great place to meet people and stock up on local wine, cheeses and other produce. You can find local red or rose wine for a euro a litre and its the same wine that is used by many local restaurants - take your own containers and join the queue. The local Brebis cheese can normally be found nearby and you can try before you buy.
St Lary-Soulan - plenty to do and see in this typical Pyrenean resort. It is here that you will find access to every possible outdoor pursuit including walking, hiking, cycling, horse riding, fishing, bird and wildlife watching, canoeing, hot-air ballooning, canyoning, white-water rafting, parapenting, motorcycling, swimming in mountain lakes and rivers, exploring the numerous caves in the area, or if you prefer just sightseeing.
The Aquensis thermal spa in Bagnères-de-Bigorre. This is considered by many to be one of the best spas in Europe and is certainly worth a visit.
