|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
This lovely detached stone building was originally a barn and home to a domesticated gos hawk. Named in honour of its former resident, it has been thoughtfully renovated to provide delightful, modern accommodation for two people. The Mews is situated close to Shepherd's Cottage, but cleverly designed to give total privacy. It is ideal for couples - a real "lover's nest". Rooms are open plan - Kitchen/Living area downstairs, with woodburner and an elegant spiral staircase going upstairs to the bedroom/bathroom. Look out over the green fields from your antique roll top bath (painted in cow colours!) or step straight out the king-sized bed and through the patio doors to enjoy a soak in the gorgeous hot tub or to drink a fresh morning coffee, made from the Nepresso coffee maker, outside in the sunshine. The kitchen has a fridge (with small freezer compartment), electric oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher and is very well equipped. Sorry, no dogs allowed at The Mews.
Our 8 peaceful cottages are dotted around our working organic dairy farm, set in unspoilt countryside on the beautiful South Devon coast.
All our cottages are just a few minutes walk from the stunning coast path and some lovely remote beaches and coves, whilst the wilderness of Dartmoor is only a short drive away. The wonderful Erme estuary and Mothecombe beach, with over 130 acres of sand at low tide, is just a couple of miles away.
Explore the nearby picturesque towns of Kingsbridge, Dartmouth and Salcombe or visit the historic port of Plymouth. Why not visit out of season and cosy down by a roaring log fire, or come and see the lambs in spring? We are open all year and offer a Friday or Monday changeover day – so come for a week or a short break at any time of year!
We put fresh local organic milk in each cottage for guests on arrival. Carswell is also the birthplace of the Well Hung Meat Company so our visitors can taste award winning local organic lamb and beef.
All the cottages are extremely well equipped with digital widescreen TVs, DVDs, washing machines, dishwashers etc and all have private gardens with patio table and BBQ. Children of all ages are very welcome and we provide toys, games and books to make them feel at home. We also have a lovely wildflower meadow with a delightful play area – complete with Alice the Tractor! Cots and high chairs available free of charge on request.
Well behaved dogs are very welcome in all the cottages except The Mews and The Beach Hut. Dogs are allowed all year round on our local beaches and also welcomed in our local pubs. Private, fenced gardens and walks straight from the front door make this a fantastic place for a holiday with your dog!
Please don't hesitate to email or call us if you have any queries and I hope we can welcome you to Carswell Farm and this special part of Devon soon.
The Sayers Family have lived and farmed in the area for generations, with Geoff's father buying Carswell Farm in the 1950s. The family farm was expanded in the 1960s with the purchase of Lambside Farm and Caulston Farm. So the whole farm now stretches for nearly 3 miles along the coast and the mild climate means that our cows enjoy fresh sea air and lush green grass all year round!
Katherine Harding purchased this barn in 1949
We have lived here all our lives and still love it! The farm is set in an Area of Outstanding National Beauty and is also right on the South West Coast Path. The nearby beaches and coves are beautiful, peaceful and full of exploration potential! Even in high summer ou can often get the beaches to yourselves...

We stayed at The Mews - part of Carswell Cottages in January 2015 for a short stay from Monday to Friday. The cottage is in a beautiful and peaceful setting and has been lovingly restored to offer high quality accommodation with all mod cons. The open plan layout gives the cottage a feeling of size and space whilst still being cosy and inviting. The kitchen is equipped with everything you need, the wood burner in the lounge provides a relaxing and warm atmosphere and there is space to relax in the lounge area. Upstairs, there is so much room, with a huge king size bed which was very comfortable and the bath is huge too - with plenty of hot water to soak away the aches from the long walks! We walked to the beach from the Cottage (maps and directions are provided) and Mothecombe Bay is only 5 minutes drive. The surrounding area is unspoilt and quiet - but we also went into Plymouth to visit a National Trust property, and the small village of Holbeton as a couple of nice pubs. Overall, this is a cottage ideally suited to couples who are looking for some time away from the hussle and bussle of life - and you won't be disappointed! We'll be back!
We had a lovely weekend in The Mews. The owners have really thought of everything you could need, there's even a Nespresso coffee machine! Bit cold to drink it on the patio when we stayed but I should think it would be a real suntrap in the summer. The cottage is tucked away down a little lane but still only a couple of minutes walk to the coast path. Absolutely fantastic and we'll be back!
All our cottages are just a few minutes walk from the coast path and there are lots of nearby coves and beaches, including our local beach, Wadham, which is only accessible by foot!
The wonderful Erme estuary and Mothecombe beach, with over 130 acres of sand at low tide, is just a couple of miles away. Or why not visit nearby Bigbury-on-Sea, with the wonderful Burgh Island, cut off at high tide and made famous by Agatha Christie!
Plymouth is 12 miles away and has a mainline station.
Exeter airport is about a 50 minute drive away.
We are situated in a remote situation, so a car is essential to get around.
The twin villages of Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers, nestled across a picturesque creek, are just over 2 miles away, while Holbeton village is about 3 miles away. Both have lovely welcoming pubs and a local shop. Explore the nearby picturesque towns of Kingsbridge, Dartmouth and Salcombe or visit the historic port of Plymouth - just 12 miles away.
Riverford Organic Farm shop is at Yealmpton - just 4 miles away, and the lovely little town of Modbury (famous for being the first plastic carrier bag free town in England!) is about 4 miles away and has a fantastic selection of small independant shops - including a butchers, deli, hardware shop, antique shops and places to relax and have a coffee!
Ivybridge is aboiut 6 miles away and Plymouth is 12 miles away and all banks and shops can be found in both towns.
