About Piers Gallie
My father bought this old monastery in 1965 when I was 11 and its been home for me ever since, except for 6 years spent cattle ranching in the Argentine. In 1979 I returned to Portugal to take over the running of the quinta, restoration of the house and planting a vineyard. I met my wife Kate in Porto where she was working as a clothing designer in the textile business. In 1988, 2 years after the birth of our first child, Sophie we thought it would be fun to rent out accommodation under the Manor House Tourism scheme, a totally new concept in Portugal, to help owners of historical properties like ours with the costs of maintenance. Many of our guests have become firm friends and return every year, its really gratifying to know that other people appreciate this place as much as we do.

A beautiful, peaceful stay in a unique setting
Had a wonderful few days staying in the gatehouse at the beautiful Franqueira convent. The flat was completely self contained and had all we needed a very enjoyable few days exploring the area. The kitchen was compact but made self catering easy and the bedroom was very comfortable. The unusual layout (like a ship) meant we had a small private terrace perfect for sitting out looking out across the peaceful grounds of the Quinta. The cloisters make a lovely location for reading or meals with the secluded pool great for catching the sun or a refreshing swim. Piers and Kate (the owners) were very helpful with identifying things to see in the area and where to get all the supplies required. Polly the dog is also a friendly member of the family! I would highly recommend staying here as a base to explore the north of Portugal. The beach is not more than 30 minutes away. Would really recommend the gatehouse to anyone looking to get away from it all.
A peaceful oasis of calm
The gatehouse offers simple accommodation for a couple. Unusual layout with two terraces upstairs offering views of the garden and a barbecue for outdoor living. The kitchen has all that you need for everyday cooking. Piers and Catherine are genial hosts available for help in advising on local restaurants and places to visit. However you can be completely private in the gatehouse as it is away from the main house. Tranquil grounds and a lovely swimming pool with plenty of loungers and shade. An ideal place to just chill out and enjoy the weather.
We stayed in the charming gatehouse and had what must be the best views of the Quinta. We breakfasted on the balcony each morning with the woods and pool as a backdrop and listened to the birds, frogs and fountain - magical!
Piers was very helpful and friendly - we arrived with a car problem and he went out of his way to help us find a local garage who sorted it out in no time. And his knowledge of the area really helped us make the most of this fascinating part of Portugal. We're already looking forward to our return!
Heerlijk appartement in monumentaal klooster
