The 17th century town centre is a pedestrianised conservation-area of cobbled streets and paved piazzas alive during the day with shopping and commerce, sophisticated in the evening with café life and alfresco dining and quite at night. Throughout the summer various cultural events are held in the town and surrounding area. The accommodation comprises a lounge/diner, double bedroom, a fully fitted kitchen, hallway and modern bathroom with shower, toilet, bidet and hand basin.

Nearby places of interest include a lake steamer trip to visit the Borromeo Islands, a "must see" World Heritage site, a visit to the Intra Saturday market, the largest on the Lake, a bus and steamer trip to Locarno in Switzerland, a walk along the lake to the famous gardens at the Villa Tarranto and walks in the surrounding mountains.

Why Jon Stansfield chose Verbania

My mother's family was from Intra and as child I spent many holidays in Italy. This instilled in me a love of Italy in general and the lake in particular. When the time came to buy a holiday home the only decision was where in Intra to buy, the town centre or in the suburbs. Being a 'Townie' I choose the centre, a decision we have never regretted.

What makes this apartment unique

We love, being 30 seconds away from fresh croissants and percolated coffee for breakfast, the friendly neighbours and all our Italian friends. We are right in the middle of life, Italian style, with 3 balconies over the streets below but having closed the double glazed French windows we are in a quiet world of our own. We enjoy the walks along the lake side and our hiking trips in the mountains. Life for us in Intra is one big relaxing escape from the rat race.

Special interest holidays:

Intra is a centre for mountain and lakeside walks; in particular, the "Val Grande" National Park - the largest wilderness area in Western Europe. The lake offers steamer trips on a web of routes including Locarno in Switzerland, the world famous Borromeo Islands and the sophisticated towns of Stressa, Baveno and Cannero, to name but a few. Intra is host to the largest of the many weekly markets around the lake, offering leather, silk and cotton goods as well as the usual local produce etc. Alternatively, it is ideally located for spending a day in Switzerland or Milan. There are three botanical gardens including one on Isola Madre, Villa Taranto and Villa Pallavicino. The lake has a long tradition of classical music, further information can be found at the Tourist Office in Pallanza or at the Intra sub-office in Piazza Matteotti across the roundabout from the ferry terminal.

Coast/Beach:

Less than 150 yards from the lake. There is a municipal swimming pool and free lake swimming beaches.

Travel:

Milan has 3 airports, the nearest Malpensa (easyJet, Flybe & BMI), Linate (easyJet, Air One and Nationals) and Bergamo (Ryanair). From all airports there are public transport links to Intra and Malpensa has a dedicated bus service (Alibus) to Intra (last bus departs terminal 2 at 20:10). Lake Maggiore is on 2 major international routes, rail - the Paris - Milan Express and road - the Simplon Pass between Lake Geneva and Milan. Depending on mode of transport, advice is available from the owner.

Distances:

Central Milan can be reached in about 2 hours by public transport and Switzerland (10 miles) by lake steamer or bus.

Intra enjoys a particularly beautiful location with a lake frontage and forest covered mountains behind. The town is traditionally Italian with narrow cobbled streets and piazzas. Banks, supermarkets, bars and restaurants are plentiful and close by with a wealth of small independent quality shops. Lake Maggiore is one of the largest lakes in Italy. With its northern end in the Switzerland, the lake has an extraordinary variety of landscapes and scenery from the high snow capped Alps to the rolling country side north of Milan. Local shopping suggestions. Luggage weight restrictions allowing we source our UK consumption of sun dried tomatoes, olive oil, dried porcini mushrooms, parmesan cheese and Amaretti biscuits from Intra. We also have an exchange library in the lounge of about 30 "holiday reading" books.

An authentic Italain Break

Well we actually stayed at this lovely little apartment in September 2014 but can only now enter a review due to family health problems.

Everything you read about this property is what you'll find, it's a very good description. Car parking was the only real issue, Jon had told us about this and to be honest, it didn't really matter once we'd figured parking areas in the vicinity.

The apartment is on the top floor with a very solid stairway going up, but plenty of room and stopping at each of the levels made carrying up the bags, easy.

The apartment was clean, tidy and well presented. Its an authentic family apartment which we fell for and enjoyed coming back each evening from our journeys.

Jon, the owner had made sure we had plenty of information regarding the apartment, the vicinity and shops which made finding things, easy.

I would and have recommended this property to some friends.

Just getting up each day and wandering down to the square for a coffee was enjoyable, then we went to get the car and set off. Brilliant.

One of the best holidays we've had in Italy and if you go, take a trip to Lake Orta...

A real Italian town

Sitting by the open windows in the sitting room of the apartment and listening to the muted sounds from the pedestrianised street below is a perfect way to soak up the sounds of the lovely Italian town of Intra. The apartment is perfectly sited to visit the many famous historic gardens; to don walking boots and walk in the hills and chestnut forests; or to take one of the ferries and visit one of the other lakeside towns all the way up to Switzerland. The largest market on the Lakes takes place weekly just down the street, and the farmers/craft market sets up in the piazza just round the corner.

in the Spring the snow on the mountains, the flowers and the blue skies make the lake an unforgettable place. Enjoying a meal by the lake on a summer's evening is a joy, whilst in the Autumn watching the farmers roast their chestnuts introduces the visitor to the richness of local traditions. The apartment is a perfect base from which to enjoy this lovely area. The original tiled floors and traditional furniture combine with the more modern facilities to complete the atmosphere of true Italy. It is a comfortable and quiet retreat in which it is good even just to stay in and read all day, popping out occasionally to a local café for a coffee or an ice-cream.

I shall definitely return and have recommended it to all my friends.

Wonderful holiday flat

We love this apartment, we like it so much that we have returned five times and each time we stay in Intra we find more things to do we have not done before.

The apartment is well, but simply equipped. We found everything we needed plus some thoughtful extras. We love its character, with its original floor tiles (I think the apartment is 18th century) and balconies from the bedroom and sitting room which over look the pedestrianised cobbled street below.

It is walking distance from shops, supermarkets, bars, cafes and restaurants and even a wine shop selling wine on tap.... you take your empty bottle and they fill it up with wine of your choice!

The lake side is barely 5 minutes walk away and from there you can take boat and ferry rides around and across the lake.

The English guide books overlook Intra, and we are not sorry as it is far less touristy than Stresa, and much more Italian. Love the flat, love Intra and love beautiful Lake Maggiore.

Our second holiday here

We had a great holiday here. We loved being in the centre of the town, with dozens of bars, restaurants and shops within a few steps from the flat. The Saturday market was fun and it was nice to hear mainly Italian voices. We enjoyed several outings on the lake.

The description in the listing is accurate, the flat is spotlessly clean, with loads of hot water. There was plenty of kitchen and dining equipment.

This was a return trip for us and we shall probably come again as it is such a good location for exploring the area

Schöne authentisch italienische Wohnung im Herzen der Stadt

Die Wohnung liegt im Herzen der Stadt. Zu Fuß ist man innerhalb von ein paar Minuten am Lago, ebenso sind Einkaufsmöglichkeiten bequem zu Fuß zu erreichen. An der Wohnung gibt es nichts auszusetzen, die Küchenausstattung ist allerdings nicht für große Kochaktionen geeeignet, das Nötigste ist jedoch vorhanden.

Parkmöglichkeiten sind etwas schwierig zu finden.

Absolut weiter zu empfehlen für Leute, die sich mit einer einfachen Wohnung im italienischen Flair zufreiden geben.

Authentisches Apartment im Herzen von Intra

Vorab sei erwähnt dass es sich bei der Ferienwohnung nicht um einen 5-Sterne Premiumeubau handelt in dem einfach alles passt. Es ist eher das Gegenteil davon und genau das macht für uns den Reiz aus. Die Wohnung ist im dritten und obersten Stockwerk eines hunderte Jahre alten Stadthauses im historischen Zentrum von Intra. Es gibt keinen Parkplatz direkt am Haus da es in der Fußgängerzone steht, in der näheren Umgebung aber genug Möglichkeiten das heilige Blech abzustellen. Unser Wagen zumindest hatte keinen Kratzer mehr als vorher und nichtmal der Mercedesstern wurde abgerissen.

Die Wohnung hat drei kleine Balkone die aber zu schmal sind um darauf zu sitzen. Man kann aber runter schauen und das Treiben in der Gasse beobachten. Zwei große Supermärkte, zig Klamottengeschäfte und Boutiquen, dutzende Bars, Restaurants, Cafés, Eisdielen und natürlich der Lago sind in 2-10 Minuten bequem per Pedes erreichbar. Der Dom ist gerade ums Eck, die Villa Taranto mit seinen Gärten erreicht man in 30 Minuten, den Fährhafen in 10 Minuten auch jeweils zu Fuß.

So viel Authentizität und die Zentrale Lage hat natürlich seine Nachteile. Die Bauliche Substanz ist wie oben erwähnt mehrer Hundert Jahre alt. Das Bad ist klein und dunkel, die Räume sind als rustikal und italienisch pragmatisch zu bezeichnen. Die Küche reicht für Zubereitung einfacher Gerichte. Das enge Treppenhaus kann man nach einer Shoppingtour schon mal verfluchen und wer gerne mit offenem Fenster pennt wird es sich für die Zeit des Aufenthalts evtl abgewöhnen müssen. Das Leben pulsiert laut in den Gassen Intras und nimmt keine Rücksicht auf den teutonischen Wach-Schlaf-Zyklus. Die Fenster jedoch haben eine beeindruckende Schalldämmung. Nur die Kirchenglocken, die lautesten Nachtigallen in der Gasse und die Männer der Stadtreinigung können sie etwas durchdringen.

Aber wer das echte Italien sucht kann hier für sich noch fündig werden.

Fazit: Man kann die Wohnung lieben oder hassen. Dazwischen gibt es wenig Spielraum. Wir haben sie geliebt und nahmen wundervolle Erinnerungen mit nach Hause und würden keine Sekunde zögern sie wieder zu buchen!

Keys to overseas destinations will be sent "International Signed For" and the cost of approx £8 will be recovered from the guest on the return of the £50 deposit.
