The properties are situated at the top of the pretty village of Lesparrou. We are just off the beaten track, nestled in a forested valley yet in the centre of many activities and amazing places to visit such as Montsegur chateau.
The region is well know for its weekly markets which sell fantastic fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs, spices and local produce. Lavelanet and Foix markets are on a Friday morning and Mirepoix on a Monday.
Renovated with thought and care using as many natural materials such as chalk paint, linseed oil and lime washes as possible. It has been a labour of love getting them to their current state and we have enjoyed living in each space so hopefully have created that home from home feel that we look for when we are travelling.
The views from the south facing windows are superb and you can sit and watch the sun rise and set over the Frau in the heart of the Pyrenees. Natural light plays an important part in the feel of our retreats, often flooding in at different times of the day.
There are several walks on the door step, along the river in both directions and up over the hill behind the property. Ideal for people who love the outdoors. There is a climbing crag 10 min walk away and many more with in 3/4 hr drive. Also canoeing on the Ariege, Aude rivers and on lac Mont Bel(the owners offer guided day trips in canoes on the lake please enquire to book). You can also hire canoes from Lac Mont Bel at Regate near Leran. We also offer guided day walks to suit all levels with Dave, a qualified international mountain leader, again please enquire for prices and to book.
This area also suits those who want a quiet base to discover the region with its Cathar castles, historic villages and more. There are many great places to eat and sample some of the local gastronomic delights!
This is an ideal region to discover on foot, on your bike or in winter. There are several different ski slopes that are within a 1hr drive. Our local slope at "mont D'Olme" is an easy 35 min drive.
Bikes can be hired locally and dropped at the property from "Velomondo " . Craig, the owner, speaks French and English , knows where we are and is extremely helpful. Please deal directly with him or let us know your requirements and we can contact him for you.

Louise and Dave have owned these properties in Lesparrou for 8 years . They love the area and are out door enthusiasts and instructors. They have one son, Jake, who also loves the house and local woods and rivers. They are very happy to share their local knowledge of the climbing crags, walks and rivers.
Dave is an International Mountain Leader and British Canoe Union coach and offers guided walks and canoe trips as optional extras to your holiday.
Louise Chandler purchased this barn in 2007
We love the views, the peacefulness and friendly people of Lesparrou. Everything we like to do is vey accessible, lakes, rivers, walks, mountains and climbing. Our Gites area sanctuary to return to after a busy day out in the country side or exploring the towns ,chateaus and markets of the surrounding area.
The properties are at the top of the village and back onto acres of oak woodland. There are fantastic mountain views from different positions in and around the properties. We thoroughly reccomend watching the sun go down with a glass of wine. Each space has its own charm and individual features, with stone walls, large windows and soft fabrics used through out.
Fresh bread can be bought every day except Monday 09.00-12.00 from the post office just opposite.
The properties are well equipped and the focus is on natural simplicity and beauty.
This place perfectly lived up to its description in the notes and gave us the ideal base for exploring an unspoilt area of France. Its location in Lesparrou meets a nice variety of needs - peace and quiet in the village itself; short local walks along the river; easy access to Lavelanet for shopping etc; plenty of interesting towns and villages within easy driving distance, and a good lake at Montbel; fascinating territory to explore the prehistoric past, Cathar history, and further afield to more serious mountain activities. Louise and David were very friendly and welcoming; their local knowledge and loan of maps really helped us to make the most of our time.
The barn has a peaceful, uncluttered atmosphere - light and airy, all the domestic stuff you need, a good hot shower, useful space down below for boots and gear, and the spiral staircase up to the bedroom is an inspired piece of retro carpentry on the way up to a good night's sleep! The sort of place you want to go back to.
I stayed here with 3 others, we had the place for a week however only stayed in the barn for 3 nights as we spent the other nights camping (for an expedition not because of the barn!)
The barn is a lovely little conversion that is comfortable, all the facilities worked well and we had no problems whilst we were there.
The owner is great, very helpful and easy to get along with! The barn is in a small village which is perfect as there are lots of cycle routes that you can go to and many other activities at a close proximity. Great views of the mountains from one window!
Louise & David are so welcoming, very helpful and enthusiastic, giving plenty of information about the surrounding area with regards to the best places to eat and visit. Lovely barn conversion, well thought out, very clean and tidy. Perfect for a base to travel around to see the mountains, and towns in the area. The village of Lesparrou is lovely, very friendly, with a river which our dog enjoyed cooling off in. The lake at Montbel, well worth a visit to have a swim or do some boating. Looking forward to visiting again.
We used this barn as a base for our Gold DofE that myself and three others completed within the pyranees along the cathar way. It is located in a small quiet village. The owner Lou was so lovely to us, helping us with anything we needed. The barn is basic but has everything that you need. The bed was surprisingly comfy and we all enjoyed a great night sleep. The barn was very clean and it is very well maintained. Everything worked as it should and we had no problems. There is a little garage that is very secure underneath the barn that is very useful for storing bikes or any other large bits of equipment. Although it is located in a small village there is a supermarket nearby and a restaurant that we enjoyed a meal in just down the road.
If you like character and originality this is an ideal place to stay. yeah the accommodation is pretty basic, but it has everything to cater for your needs in a 'sort of ' topsy turvy manner. The photo of the Frau (on the ad) is taken from the window and you can sit and relax on a spacious settee looking at that exact view as you sup your glass of wine or mug of coffee. Lesparrou is a tiny, sleepy village and a get place to relax away from the stresses of work. The friendly owners Dave and Louise live next door and are always happy to help out with local advice. If you are a mountaineer there are plenty of good 2000 m+ peaks within an hours drive, which will keep you busy. The barn has plenty of space for keeping your climbing/skiing/walking/boating etc etc gear. I will be back, without a doubt.
If you want a place with character this is ideal for you. The barn is in a sleepy village and the owners (Dave and Louise) live next door so are readily on hand to help with any queries about the area. its a great base for exploration of the Ariege Mountains with many 2000m + mountains within an hours drive. It is reasonably priced and well equipped but basic, although the design is a bit topsy turvy it enhances its appeal. I would definitely stay here again as it is a great base if you are one for the mountains and with friendly owners close to hand your stay is guaranteed to be a success.
