About Bruce Herring
We have lived in Nevada County since 1988 and have two grown children. We enjoy all this area has to offer and are most pleased to have Orchard House ready to share with you!
Why Bruce Herring chose Grass Valley
In February of ’10 this area was buried in three feet of snow. Hundreds of trees and power poles in Western Nevada County came down - including the “twin” to the Grandfather Black Oak in front of the house. The Civil War era giant smashed into the roof and west side of the 1950s era barn that stood where Orchard House stands today. Over a period of months, the smaller limbs were bucked up, cut into firewood, and hauled away. That fall a crew with a portable mill cut and stacked hundreds of square feet of rough cut 1x6 oak planks. We thought “maybe some day” we might just use them for something. Remnants of that old oak are still piled under the remaining tree. In the summer of ’13 Bruce demoed the remainder of the barn, we retained the services of architect Dave Mann, and the concept of Orchard House took shape. The building went up in 2014 under the able direction of our contractor friends Chuck Morey and Terry Mueck. And yep, those oak planks from the “twin” Grandfather do indeed make up the floor of the Great Room. Much of the rafter material for the front entry way and rear patio structures are original roof rafters from the old barn. The material in the sliding barn doors came from old apple-packing boxes and the loft floor. The “barnwood” exterior siding was purchased thru Hills Flat Lumber, and is actual old barn siding primarily from Oregon. This property was a working apple orchard from the mid forties until 1998. We first came onto it in the late eighties to pick raspberries from John and Dagmar Gundersen. John also ran a wood shop in the old barn. When they sold and left the area in ’98 the orchard fell into neglect, until we bought it in ‘07. We are very proud of Orchard House and all who took part in its creation, and honored to share it with our guests. Bruce and Sally Herring

Lovely Orchard House
Fabulous house in Grass Valley, beautifully appointed, well-equipped kitchen, everything you could need.
The Orchard house was beautiful, we loved it and can't wait to go back.
The property was incredible and the house was amazing. We only stayed for one night but we didn't want to leave. The grill was great and bring 20 minutes from Hoyt's Crossing was so nice. Loved the Orchard House and can't wait to go back.
Slice of heaven

Quiet and beautiful. All new everything. Easy coming and going. We loved it. Bring a sleeping mask if you like to sleep in. It’s a bit bright in the morning.
