About Gina Stacey

Hello, we live in Surrey with our 3 children. One of our favourite things is going on holiday. Whichever country we are in we love trying new foods, exploring and experiencing the culture. It is something that we look forward to for most of the year. About 5 years ago we decided that we would love to own a place abroad of our own. We looked at all of our usual favourite places; The Greek Islands, the Canary Islands, Spain, France and Italy. All are beautiful but we just couldn't find 'The right spot'. Bulgaria was a relative new discovery to us. It is a country that has been preserved in many ways, as it had been under socialist rule up until 1989. Here we discovered a country that had not merged into the Euro blend, as sadly so many other countries have. We were hooked.

Gina Stacey purchased this villa in 2008

Why Gina Stacey chose Bulgaria

Here we found 'The spot' in 2006. A piece of land that had stunning panoramic views across fields, looking towards the Black Sea and an ancient oak forest. It is on the edge of a pretty village that is big enough to have a choice of cafes and shops but small enough to be welcoming. From here we can walk to the stunning beach with fine pure white sand and enjoy views that take me back 25 years. We discovered that in the summer the beach springs to life with lots of cafes, bars, shops, restaurants and even an outdoor cinema. It positively buzzes! We decided that here we could build our perfect villa, including all the things that we liked when staying at other villas in the past. In 2008 it was completed and it became 'Gina's Retreat' a place to rest and relax.

What makes this villa unique

The villa is an easy 40 minutes drive from Varna airport. The spacious villa sits in a large enclosed plot with south facing pool and stone BBQ. Everything you need to enjoy your holiday is within easy walking distance. Eating out in Bulgaria is a pleasant experience. Many of the restaurants and cafes offer an English menu. The food is fresh and the fish and salads fantastic. Prices are very reasonable, with a meal for 5 including drinks, costing about £20. Out of the summer season; the village and beach resort become peaceful, the area rural. Relax as the animals graze in the fields around the villa. Enjoy great fishing and walks. There is a bus linking the village to Varna City. The cafes and restaurants are open all year but you can also use the BBQ, dine whilst watching shooting stars.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Hi Gina You certainly described your villa perfectly- it really is a retreat. We loved the peaceful location and as for the villa my 4 year old daughter summed it up perfectly - Wow mummy, this place is awesome! We were pleased to have such a large garden for my daughter to run around in safely. We have been on a number of villa holidays and have to say that Gina's retreat is the best! Many thanks Sharon"

"Dear Gina We are back home after our great holiday, we had a great time. The villa was just what the doctor ordered everyone thought the same. I will be recommending you to all my family and friends so glad I found Gina’s Retreat on the internet. Best Regards to you, Margareret."

“Thank you Gina, a little bit flat after such a fantastic holiday, miss the wonderful views. My mum and I think we will rename it Sarah & Kathys retreat whilst we are there! You had thought of everything. We definitely want it next year and are already counting down the days till we go again. Sarah”

Laid back heaven!

  • 5 of 5

Gina's retreat is perfect for families who want a quiet holiday. A large villa with all the mod cons and a nice sized pool, with amazing views in a sleepy Bulgarian village. Those with very small children or elderly guests may want to hire a car to go to the beach, as it is a bit of a trek along a busy-ish road (which for the most part has no path). This is our second visit, and it gets better every time!

Relaxing and scenic

  • 5 of 5

The villa lived up to all of our expectations and more. The location is excellent with no need for a car. We walked for miles exploring the local area, enjoyed very reasonably priced meals at the beach bars, cooked some excellent meals on the villas barbecue and made full use of the lovely pool. It is definitely on our list of places to revisit.

The most peaceful holiday ever

  • 5 of 5

This has to be one of the best holidays ever! The villa is fantastic, spacious and very well equipped. The surroundings are fantastic, we were very lucky to see the surrounding fields of sunflowers bloom during our stay, absolutely a sight to behold. We loved the simplicity of the village life, the local villagers made us feel very welcome. The beach is absolutely lovely, very friendly bars and restaurants. I have no hesitation recommending this holiday.

A beautiful villa, with fantastic views

  • 5 of 5

This villa is lovely and affords lovely views of lush farmland, the sea and nearby hills. In the heat of day, you can cool down in the pool, or sit in the shade of the terrace. The local village has a really nice restaurant with a good menu and friendly staff. The beaches are lovely and unspoilt, with a good range of restaurants and bars to choose from. The local food and drink was very good and reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend this accommodation to others, as it is clean, well-maintained, with a home away from home feel.

Fantastic location for a family retreat

  • 5 of 5

8 of us stayed for two weeks from 17/7/15 and none of us would fault a single thing. The location is perfect, everything ridiculously cheap and days and evening can be enjoyed just as much either in and around the villa and it's lovely pool or down at the near by beach resort.

Tips for future travellers:

Visit the metro superstore in Varna early in your stay to do a big shop - Koko from the maintainence team will take you! We spent around £260 and never needed to return for the rest of our stay. Great selection of food and drink, make sure you take passport to get a day membership!

Evening meals out you need to walk down to the beach, this takes about 25 mins with children but is a nice walk. A meal for 4 with drinks costs about £25 and the food is great. When returning from the beach at night there is a horse and carriage which will bring you back to the villa for 10 lev!

On the road from the villa to the beach there is a drinks warehouse selling alcoholic and soft drinks in bulk, great for when you want to have days and evenings in the villa!

We will 100% be returning and I've no doubt the area will continue to grow. The locals are very friendly although very few speak English but pointing generally gets you by. The best holiday we've had and also the cheapest compared to stays in all inclusive resorts so a win all round, thanks Gina!

Beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

This is our second visit back to this wonderful villa with it's amazing views. We felt like we had come home on arrival as everything was so familiar to us. We were met by George who, as always, was extremely helpful and on call for any assistance if needed.

We had another fantastic relaxing 2 weeks holiday, days were spent lazing by the pool and we spent our evenings at the local restaurants, the nearest being only 5 minutes walk away. The locals were friendly and eager to please.

The owners have thought of everything. The children enjoyed playing on the table football and this kept them amused on many occasions.

I would recommend this villa to anyone looking for total relaxation and cannot wait to return next year!

Owner's Response: Hi Sarah, Chris and family, Thank you for your lovely review, it is always great to have guests returning. I have passed your review on to George as he really is an asset to us and appreciates the compliments. I think that the games table has certainly become a well loved fixture of the villa, a very good purchase. Your dates for next year are confirmed and we look forward to welcoming you all again. Best wishes to you all, Gina & Family.

A 15 minutes walk brings you to the fine sandy beach of Shkorpilovtsi. It is over 12km long, 100m wide and stretches from Kamchia down to Byala. The beach is a big hit with most children, including mine. With soft white sand, perfect for sand-castles and the coastal water warmer and less salty than the Mediterranean seas. It is popular with Bulgarian families but more unknown to other nationalities. It retains its serene natural beauty without too many tourist trappings even in the high season.

The local airport is Varna with UK flights served by Wizz Air (Luton), Bulgarian Air (Gatwick) & Balkan Holidays (from many regional airports). Shkorpilovtsi is 38km south of Varna, a 45 minutes drive. An alternative airport is Burgas (98km), served by Thomas Cook & Thompson. The villa is walking distance to the beach, restaurants and shopping, but hiring a car will allow you to explore the many beautiful places further afield. Our property manager now offers airport transfers, please ask.

Further Details:

Shkorpilovtsi and it's beach is a hidden gem. Being 11km off the main highway, it has been buffered from the mass development of Bulgaria in the last 5 years. The resort is low key, ideal if you want to enjoy life at a relaxed pace. The pleasures of eating out here are very reasonable on the family purse. An average meal for 5 including drinks, is around £20. You have many choices where to eat; the village has cafes, a bar and 3 mini-markets. Nearer to the beach there are numerous restaurants, cafes and snack bars. In high season you can enjoy the open air cinema for £1.50 per person or enjoy the live singers whilst dining at the restaurants.
