Thiernswood Cottage is an outstanding holiday home for the family. It is a fully modernised, traditional Dales cottage, built in the middle of the 19th century and set in the grounds of Thiernswood Hall. It has its own enclosed garden and nestles under a wooded hillside and is approached by a tree lined drive one third of a mile long. The superior accommodation includes a spacious lounge, dining room, kitchen, entrance porch, two bedrooms, both with en-suite facilities. There is an multi fuel stove in the lounge. free wifi. Hot water is provided by an immersion heater. Like all our family/large properties, a washer drier is installed. The post office, shops and pubs are two miles away at Reeth.

About Janet Hughes

Swaledale Cottages is a small family run business which has been in existence since 1977. Over those years we have had several properties in different locations in the Dales and now proudly offer three cottages in lovely locations in or near the village of Healaugh (nr.Reeth) in Swaledale. We have a policy of continuous improvement so all of our cottages are both pristine and well equipped. The two properties cater for 2 and 4 people and we have moved towards en-suite facilities. Although all our cottages are 4 Star perhaps the best measure of the satisfaction of our customers is the large number of customers who return again and again. We have customers who have been coming to our cottages every year for the past 20 years and now children of customers are bringing their loved ones.

Delightful cottage in a peaceful location

We spent a wonderful week at Thiernswood Cottage. It is very well equipped and is located in a peaceful area with views across the moors and with easy access to visitor attractions. The owners were very welcoming and we look forward to future visits.

Lovely clean cottage, all we needed and more.The owners were very nice and extremely helpful .

We had pretty good weather walked a bit had a cream tea at Ravenseat which is a must. Saw lots of curlews and a baby one too.very good shops at Leyburn, caught the little while bus at Gunnerside to Muker and walked back, all very nice and very helpful driver. I must put in that l of our party was Taken ill and the owners of our cottage went the extra mile to help us even fetched a prescription for us, so kind rarely seen in these times..would recommend highly.

Hidden gem in beautiful location

Very welcoming and friendly couple. Cottage was immaculate and in stunning location. Very peaceful and on the doorstep of fabulous walking country. Five minutes from Reeth and in close proximity to lovely pubs. Highly recommended. Would definitely return.

Wonderful location, lots of friendly people and unspoilt landscape.

The cottage is very well located in the outskirts of the village. It comes with an amazing view from the window which only gets better as you explore out into Swaledale. Robert and Janet were very accommodating and offered a warm welcome. The cottage itself is a little quirky with the electricity meters, house rules and the old fashioned decor but it soon became a home and we found it quite refreshing. There is a public footpath that leads up past the geese so be aware they like to make a song and dance! The local market in Reeth is worth a visit and definitely try the fish and chips from the van that stops in the village if you are there on a Friday night. Would stay again for sure.

Stunning Location Disappointing Stay Overall

Lovely property in a stunning location. The owner did not make us feel welcome their first comment to us was your late and the second thing they said was do you know how to clean a hob showing us the cleaning hob cream!!. The list of rules and regulations continued and we were horrified to find the advert advertises £5 electricity heating included when it was not. Also we had to feed the electricity meter to supply the storage heaters which did not heat the property adequatley in winter. We sat huddled in the bed quits in the living room in the evening. The gentleman asked us to pay for the coal at a cost of £10 per bag so we could have a fire to warm the house, when they had agreed via email they would supply the first bag free. Not a great impression probably this property would be ok in summer.

Durham and Tees Valley Airport approx. 50 mins drive. Darlington Raiolway Station approx. 45 mins.


The post office, shops and pubs are two miles away at Reeth. Richmond is located at the foot of the Dale. We are surrounded by castles, waterfalls and spectacular countryside. We have a genuine operating Georgian theatre in Richmond. The Bowes Museum, The Green Howards Regimental Museum, and the Dales Museum are all close by as is The Wensleydale Creamery and Theakstons and Black Sheep breweries.

The area is essentially walking country and you will find much to enjoy as you tramp the heather moors, ford the streams or pause to admire the handiwork of dry stone wall builders.

Reeth is the main village in the centre of the Dale. It has a large village green surrounded by stone built houses, country shops, pubs and tea shops. In the nearby village of Low Row you will be able to visit a working farm. Hazel Brow Farm is an ideal day out, especially for younger children. Richmond is located at the foot of the Dale and boasts an impressive castle with a fine Norman Keep. It is also home of the Royal Georgian Theatre which is over 200 years old. The Green Howards Museum commemorates the origins of the oldest regiment in the British Army. In Upper Swaledale, the unique Butter Tubs Pass leads through to Wensleydale.

Changeover Day:
Our weekly changeover day is Saturday. Key collection: 4pm from Thiernswood Hall. Please vacate property: No later than 10.00am on day of departure.
