About Anna Ward and John Willer
Anna Ward and John Willer both have long links with Yorkshire. Anna was born in Hull and John has run marathons over pretty much all of it. We keep up our connection by spending some time every year here at Minster View in York. We really enjoy strolling round the city, we get to go to the cinema on the river on a near daily basis and we top up our marmite supplies. (If you're puzzled by the last point it's because we live in Granada in Spain the rest of the year.) For us, spending time between Granada and York is pretty much perfect - and we know how lucky we are...
Anna Ward and John Willer purchased this House in 2002
Why Anna Ward and John Willer chose York
What we love about Minster View is pretty much summed up in the name! We have views of York Minster from all of the rooms at the back of the house, which is lovely. I particularly like looking at the Minster when doing the washing up. (Don't worry - we also have a dishwasher.)
What makes this House unique
York is a great city for strolling, with everything easily accessible within a few minutes walk. And because we are right in the centre we can pop out, have a look around, and then nip back for a cup of tea….. Perfect.
Comfortable, elegant townhouse, brilliant location
From the moment we arrived we knew we were in for a wonderful stay. The house had everything we needed, with caring, helpful touches like office supplies in the desk, shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom, cooking foil, olive oil and vinegar in the kitchen. A really interesting selection of books, films and music in the living room, for when we needed to catch our breath with a cup of tea or coffee in between sampling the delights of York. The view of the Minster over the city walls at the back of the house was a constant delight. Beds were very comfortable, there was always plenty of hot water and we felt very pampered.
Our car was safe in secure parking nearby, and there were so many delights within a really short walk. We had a wonderful time in York, with street markets, museums, churches, Jorvik viking centre and the York Dungeon and really enjoyed just walking around the picturesque streets and visiting the number of small, independent shops. York is small enough to feel you can walk everywhere in the centre, has a very friendly atmosphere and is busy without seeming unpleasantly crowded. We were impressed with the range of independent stores - the big names are there if you want them, but there are lots of fascinating smaller shops with a much more interesting range of goods.
The house is really well organised; spacious and attractive. The owners have obviously put a lot of care into it, so guests feel very cherished. With five adults we never felt crowded: we have stayed in places where it's a bit of a squeeze to all sit at the dinner table or relax on the sofas, but at Minster View, everything feels spacious and comfortable. We thoroughly recommend it and look forward to another visit when we have the chance. Thank you very much.
Well, thank you for your kind words, Helena and family. It's always gratifying to hear not only that guests have enjoyed their stay, but also that they can appreciate the care we have tried to exercise in making a visit to York something of a home-from-home experience. We'd like to take the credit for everything that York is and offers, but that would be unfair; we do however consider ourselves privileged that Minster View is part of it.
Please do come and stay again!
We had a great time. The property was just round the corner from the minster so the ideal location. The property is on the first, second and third floor. My mum is 83 and she was able to get up the stairs ok.
The place was clean and tidy. The parking space is across the road and round the corner from the property which was great and saved a fortune in parking.
We will definitely be back.
A wonderful historic house full of character and homely comforts - great location
We had a great stay in this warm, home away from home. It was like stepping back in time and everything we needed was there, including a collection of books, CDs and DVDs. With a full kitchen, self catering is a breeze. The decor is perfect and we were very comfortable. Being a short walk from the Minster, we were amongst the walled city in minutes. Surrounded by pubs, cafes and restaurants plus a small Sainsbury supermarket, walking everywhere was effortless. The property managers are great, very welcoming and friendly. We would definitely stay at Minster View again. There are a lot of stairs to consider but they are sturdy and carpeted.
This is a lovely flat in the heart of York with everything you need for a comfortable stay.
We had a great stay - sadly we were working extremely hard so didn't have a chance to see York, so we will be back when we have time for a proper break! The flat was perfect for our group and the parking space invaluable!
Turn the corner and you’re suddenly n the 15th century!
We stayed at Minster View in late August and had a wonderful, perfect weather time there. The location is as good as it gets! Just 75 meters from the front door, you turn left around the corner and there’s the ancient Bootham Bar gate. Walk through the arch and you’re immediately transported back about 600 years to Medieval York. Great, fun area to shop, eat and just stroll through for the period architecture. The truly impressive Minster is this way, too.
The flat is on a very busy street so if you arrive by taxi, the driver may not drop you off directly in front. Ours let us and all of our luggage off in a parking lot up the street so it took a little awhile to get back to the front door. Toby, the manager had arranged for us to check in early and to get the keys at the bistro next door. This same bistro was also nice enough to accept some very important medical boxes that my husband required during our stay. (When I made my reservation with them, I was quite relieved that they were willing to take the shipment. Some other city’s flats that I’ve looked into in the past have not been so willing so regrettably, we had to give up on some truly gorgeous flats and look elsewhere. The owners and managers here were extremely helpful and cooperative.)
The flat is quite roomy and the country kitchen is well equipped with dishwasher and washer/dryer. They had complimentary coffee and tea plus some cooking staples like sauces, herbs, spices, etc. Be aware that the front staircase is quite steep so be prepared for some heavy lifting to get your luggage up to the bedrooms. My husband and I took the front double bedroom while our traveling companion loved the large, private attic. We all used the smaller single as storage. Beds were quite comfortable. The living room has many helpful books and pamphlets on the area.
A grocery store, pubs and ethnic eateries are just around the opposite corner from Bootham Bar. Across the street are pizza and Chinese take-out. The bistro next door have won awards and was very good. Most of the main sites are within walking distance.
All in all, if you want to visit York and be right near the action, you couldn’t do much better than a stay at the very cozy, comfy and convenient Minster View!
We were really pleased to hear that you had a great time and that you got your medicine safely.
Thank you for taking the time to write such a thorough review. I'm sure people will find it very helpful.
We also love the location, there's something very special about being able to pop out and explore but also come back when the need for a cuppa beckons...

Great location to explore York.
A lovely apartment. Kitchen was well stocked with crockery and utensils. The sitting room was pleasant. The bedrooms were comfortable. Only downside was that there was just one toilet/bathroom which was a bit limiting with 5 people staying but as we are one family we were able to work out usage. Might be more of an issue for unrelated guests. Very convenient for the city attractions and the Minster. We were met on arrival and made to feel comfortable. Lots of pubs/cafes etc nearby. Great location - met our expectations.
From York to Scarborough (a lively seaside town with attractive double bay and castle) is 40 miles (and takes about an hour by car). It is also accessible by bus and train. There are plenty of other appealing seaside destinations within reach, for a day trip including Flamborough Head, Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby.
The nearest airports are:
East Midlands airport (96 miles or 2hrs by car).
Leeds/Bradford airport (31 miles or 1hr by car).
Manchester airport (82 miles or 1hr 45m by car).
The airports are also accessible by bus and train. A car is not necessary for exploring York. Everything is nearby and accessible on foot. A car is useful, although not vital, for further afield sights such as the Yorkshire Dales or the coast.
York is ideally placed as a base to explore the beauty and tranquillity of Harrogate and the Yorkshire Dales (about a 2 hour drive) and the North York Moors National Park (approx 1.5 hours drive).
Local shops such as the supermarket, chemist and a wide selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants are all available within a few yards of Minster View. The majority of the sights of York are available within a 5 - 20 minute walk.
