About Martyn Lewis

Margaret and I are a retired English couple who fell in love with this part of Tuscany after vacationing here several times. After buying L'Olmo in 2000 we both gave up our jobs in London to enjoy the lifestyle and friendship of the local people and decided to share it with others as much as possible. We are here for most of the summer and spend our winters in the UK and travelling to visit other parts of the world we have not yet seen. We have been married for 49 years and have two children and five grandchildren. We have lived most of our lives in England but also spent 10 years living in the USA.

Martyn Lewis purchased this farmhouse in 2000

Why Martyn Lewis chose Metropolitan City of Florence

We originally bought L'Olmo with the intention of using it as a holiday home. But we found that the more we visited it the more we wanted to be here and so we found a way to spend more of the year here by sharing this wonderful house and location with family and friends. Anyone who is looking for a very special holiday will certainly enjoy this undiscovered part of Tuscany with its green hills and friendly people. We both love sharing our experiences and local knowledge in the hope that it will somehow enhance our visitors' enjoyment of the area. One of our American friends recently summed it up well as, 'urban comfort, rural pleasure'.

What makes this farmhouse unique

L'Olmo is well situated to reach and enjoy other parts of Tuscany. The local villages of Londa, Dicomano, Vicchio and Rufina offer a diverse culture of local life and are very welcoming to visitors. Our local region known as The Mugello/Val di Sieve was chosen by the Medici for their summer homes and as the best place to make wine and olive oil. Florence is just 40 mins by train and other interesting Tuscan towns such as Siena, San Gimignano, Lucca, Pisa and Arezzo can all be reached in about an hour. After a day travelling and enjoying the bustle of these busy towns it is always nice to return to the peace and tranquility of L'Olmo and enjoy a glass of Chianti while watching the sun set over Florence.

Guestbook comments from the manager

L’Olmo is a Tuscan farmhouse that has been restored with the utmost respect for Tuscan traditions. It overlooks the magnificent countryside. The lights of Florence are visible in the distance at night. Olive trees and fig trees scatter the property. The local shepherd ”Alberto” brings his sheep every day to graze on the beautiful meadows.

Londa, the local village, is a short ride and is well equipped with a supermarket, a great deli, grocery, meat, baker, shops and two restaurants.

The road to L’Olmo is steep in places, but I have been to Tuscany enough to know that all spectacular views have roads that are steep. I think one of my favorite things about L’Olmo is that I felt I was experiencing the REAL Italy.

The house is charming with lots of fireplaces, covered dining porch overlooking the landscape, swimming pool, lovely kitchen, dinning room and two living rooms. One bath was down a flight of stairs from the bedroom, but it hardly mattered after the first night.

Our group likes to head off in the morning, have a great lunch and dine at home. We hired Margaret’s cook to shop and do meals and they were fabulous. They also did the breakfast dishes and the beds. It was well worth the extra charges.

Martyn conducts the most comprehensive wine tours we have ever taken. He is an oenophile and knows all the wine makers in the area. We took several wine tours with him - they were terrific.

Oh, did I say Florence is only 45 minutes by train? We can’t wait to return.

Beautiful, spacious house with magnificent views

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 8 spent a wonderful week at L'Olmo. The house was very spacious, clean, well-equipped and beautifully furnished. We had many happy times cooking together in the large kitchen and eating out on the terrace soaking in the amazing view of the Tuscan hills. Our days were spent lazing by the pool, walking in the nearby woods, visiting local towns and markets and eating in some delicious restaurants. We also had a day in Florence. Our hosts, Martyn and Margaret were very welcoming and gave us help and advice whenever we needed it. It was a perfect holiday and our only regret was that we couldn't stay for 2 weeks!

Beautiful house with fabulous views

  • 5 of 5

We were two families with 5 children between us. L'Olmo is not your average holiday rental; it is a beautifully furnished, comfortable home. Martin and Margaret (who live in separate accommodation below the house) are lovely. Although they are on hand to help with queries re local restaurants etc. the villa is still very much yours. The pool can be seen from the house, and there is a lovely outdoor dining area. We thought it was lovely and although the drive up to the house is long, it is worth it for the views when you get to the house.

Enchanted April meets A Room With A View

  • 5 of 5

L'Olmo is a delightful villa with stunning views across the Tuscan hills. We wanted to choose a special property to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary with family and could not have found anywhere more perfect. The setting is idyllic, the facilities first class and location excellent. We stayed at L'Olmo for a fortnight but wished we could have stayed all summer. The villa is set in rural Tuscany yet well located for day trips to Florence and Arezzo etc... However, we spent much of our time at the villa, simply enjoying the generous sized pool and eating al fresco. This is an exceptional property and is highly recommended.

Charming farmhouse in beautiful setting!

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a peaceful and relaxing stay in a Tuscan countryside setting, and we could not have been more satisfied. L’Olmo is a charming and pretty old farmhouse in a privileged and secluded location in the hills just an hour´s drive from Florence. It sits in ample grounds and the views it enjoys of the surrounding hills really are breathtaking. The house itself is spacious with plenty of room for our two families (4 adults, 6 kids) to stay comfortably together. We particularly enjoyed the cosy farmhouse kitchen and the shaded terrace that proved to be a wonderful place for outdoor dining. The bedrooms too are peaceful and relaxing, and waking up there, to those views on all sides of the house, was always special. The whole place is tastefully decorated in keeping with the location and the age of the house, and it was given to us in spotlessly clean condition.

L’Olmo has its own private pool that has commanding views of the beautiful mountain scenery but at the same time has plenty of natural shade from the many trees that border it. We could barely drag our children away from it! There are plenty of gardens around the house, especially good for children to explore, and there was the occasional treat for them in the form of the friendly old farmer who brought his sheep and sheepdog to the field next door.

The owners, Martyn and Margaret, are terrific and made a great contribution to the overall experience of staying at L’Olmo. They live on the property itself, but in a self-contained flat. They were helpful in the run-up to our holiday, warm and welcoming on our arrival, and showed considerable kind concern to ensure that we were comfortable, happily re-arranging the bed configuration to suit our children’s wishes! They left us to ourselves but were always on hand and happy to help us with anything related to the house or to the local area, which they know very well, after 16 years. L’Olmo is in wine country and there are plenty of interesting daytrips around, even Florence is reachable by train, but we were happy this time just to enjoy the house, its pools and grounds, and the views, with daily walks in the hills surrounding. There are plenty of good restaurants in the surrounding villages (again, the owners know them all and were happy to offer advice), but we enjoyed buying food locally and cooking Tuscan food. All in all, it's a beautiful house, well and thoughtfully run. Staying there was a wonderful experience for us.

A gorgeous, undiscovered gem

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at L’Olmo in the summer of 2015. We were traveling with a young baby and an elderly mother.

Martyn and Margaret were really kind and went above and beyond to help us out. They were amazingly helpful with everything including helping us to extend our holiday in a neighboring property.

L’Olmo has everything you could want or need. An extremely well kitted-out kitchen, comfortable living room, loads of space to eat in or out, good standard bathrooms, books and all creature comforts. The house has extras such as a cot or high chair if you need it and toys in the pool for the kids etc.

The area was wonderful - near Florence, but rural and high enough to avoid the heat of the valley. The temperature was perfect for everyone. We all enjoyed the wonderful views, the non-invasive, friendly hospitality of our hosts, and meeting the local shepherd as he grazed his sheep by the house. A great holiday! Thank you!

Fabulous Tuscan farmhouse with delightful hosts

  • 5 of 5

We arrived late on the Saturday night and Martyn & Margaret where still up and waiting for us at 11pm, having provided the most delicious meal with wine that we had pre-ordered with breakfast for the next morning and a few other groceries, well worth it! Their wonderful hosting continued throughout, they were discreet enough to think they weren't there but always on hand when we needed anything.

L'Olmo is in a stunning location at the top of a Chianti hill, yet within an hour of Florence. The farmhouse has bags of character with big bedrooms and a lovely kitchen. The views are indeed spectacular from inside and from the sun terrace with its bbq, even a drinks fridge so you can get stuck into a long relaxing evening while the sun sets and watch the shepherd bring his sheep up past the house. (watch the aerial video on here and you'll want to go immediately!)

The local area is delightful with plenty of villages and small towns to explore and the train station 2 miles away gets you to Florence with ease, though we drove as well which was also a doddle.

L'Olmo sits in a huge garden dotted with olive trees with a big swimming pool on a terrace with lots of shading from the fig and other trees, or out in the open if you want to get scorched! The figs were to die for at the beginning of September, as were the punnet of blackberries that Martyn & Margaret picked for us one day.

We had a few great meals out in local restaurants but the food from the villages was of such high quality we ate at the house most of the time. Martyn is an expert on the local wine and which set us off on the right track, he even took me on a tour of the best producers.

We stayed for one week and wish we'd gone for two.

L'Olmo has everything you could possibly need: table tennis and pool toys, board games, good speed WiFi as I needed to keep in touch with work, satellite TV that we didn't use.

I can't think of anything negative to say, other than that one bathroom was a bit dated but it was big and worked well so is irrelevant. Whilst the photos and video here are very good it still felt better than we'd anticipated when we arrived which was lovely.

We'll go back again for certain, I can't recommend it more highly.
