Cottage in Burgau, Western Algarve, Portugal - Unbeatable Location On Fishermen's Slipway Overlooking The Ocean
About Joanna Baker
Peter and Joanna Scriven have a long association with the Western Algarve and have owned property there since 1983. Currently residing in Dubai, they and their their family visit their "second home" in the Western Algarve every year and plan, one day, to live there on a permanent basis.
Joanna Baker purchased this Apartment in 1980
Why Joanna Baker chose Burgau
We first "discovered" Burgau in 1974 and immediately fell in love with this charming fishing village. In 1983 we were very fortunate to purchase Casa Pedro. Rarely is such property available, so ideally located next to the sea. Over the years, Casa Pedro has been modified and upgraded but we have always tried to do this in a sympathetic way that retained its character and charm. Each summer, we make the long journey from Dubai to return to Burgau where we feel instantly at home. The contrast of life between Dubai and Burgau is astounding. Burgau provides the perfect antidote to a stressful work life and a reality check on what life should be all about!
What makes this Apartment unique
Though compact in size, Casa Pedro has considerable charm and is perfectly located to enjoy village life in Burgau. Walking distance from lots of lovely cafes restaurants and mini-markets and in a prime position to buy the pick of the catch from returning fishermen on the beach. Its just so nice to fall asleep listening to the ocean waves, in this peaceful and tranquil village where the people are so friendly and welcoming

What a fantastic view across the beach!
We loved the position and view from the cottage. Going to sleep with the sound of the sea lapping on the sand was second to none..so relaxing!
The cottage is a real gem and well positioned in the village.
Perfect for a relaxing laid back holiday
We cant believe we found such a lovely place. Your virtually on the beach!
As described Casa Pedro is 'small and cosy' but was perfect for the two of us. A balcony on the first floor offers a beautiful view of the village centre and surrounding hills.
A bottle of wine, some cheese/ham and bread was a lovely touch on our arrival. Laura who looks after the cottage was friendly and made us feel very welcome.
Beach towels, parasols a selection of books to read and a hairdryer which were all available for use helped lighten the load on the journey there and back!
Plenty of bars and restaurants. For our 10 day stay we were able eat some where different every night all within walking distance. A small grocery store just minutes up the cobbled street had everything we needed including a vast range of wines at prices you would never see in the UK!
We will most certainly be making a return visit.
Dear Carole, thank you so much for the lovely review of your stay in Casa Pedro, we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay in our little cottage, and that Burgau had all that you needed for a relaxing holiday. We are looking forward to welcoming you back again in the future! Joanna
Perfect accommodation for 2 with breathtaking ocean views which come into their own as you climb the stairs to the first floor living room. So close to the beach you can almost touch it & you can certainly hear the waves crashing ashore! Casa Pedro is very well maintained & Laura offers a warm welcome. Locals are all very friendly & a great welcome awaits in the Brizze Bar litterally a stones throw away serving great breakfasts. Casa Pedro is our Casa Paradise & we will be back!
A great little cottage
Casa Pedro, a perfect retreat for two people who just want to work and relax where they can see the sea and sit in the sun! The house is so well equipped, clean and homely, we think it is the best holiday accommodation we have ever stayed in. Plenty of local restaurants and a long sandy beach add to the pleasure. We will be back!
A little gem
A pair of fifty-somethings,we booked Casa Pedro for an early summer break and the reality exceeded expectations. This is a true gem. The location is just stunning, the apartment super with great views, and to be rocked to sleep by the waves, a pleasure. We hired a car and explored the area. Loved the Tomik cafe and bar for coffee and internet, dined at some great places- the star being The Anchora in the lower square- the best food we have ever tasted. Beach Bar is well worth a visit, as it as is the little restaurant just behind the Intermarche at Budens-best steak on the stone from this family run little secret.
We returned with a heavy heart and a passion to return.
Despite the rain which greeted us as we arrived in Burgau it failed to dampen our spirits when we saw our lovely little apt in Casa Pedro exactly as advertised and the beautiful view of the beach from the upstairs living room balcony a dream come through. We loved our holiday in Burgau and found the apt very comfortable, well equipped and the location just perfect. You are spoiled for choice with the many great restaurants in Burgau and though small the village has everything one needs. We didn't hire a car and used Yellowfish Taxi transfer from Faro and found them excellent. We enjoyed walking the local cliff trails and used the bus to visit Lagos, Sagres and Cabo San Vincente. We intend returning to explore this beautiful area further and can thoroughly reccomend Casa Pedro and Burgau for a great holiday.
Beach is less than 50m away. Burgau is located at the heart of probably the finest stretch of coastline in South West Europe. The coastline is protected to the west of Burgau which has national park status. The sandy coves and limestone cliffs form a dramatic backdrop to this wonderful stretch of ocean coastline.
Nearest airport is Faro 50 mins drive using the new highway. Lisbon is less than 3 hours drive by motorway. Car hire is advantageous but certainly not essential.
The nearest railway station is in Lagos 8km. Taxis are readily available in the village and there is a regular daily bus service to and from Lagos.
Burgau has steep narrow roads and cobbled walkways which can be difficult for the old and frail. All village facilities, restaurants and bars are within an easy stroll away from the cottage.
Wide range of local shops and supermarkets in the village. Around 20 bars and restaurants are within walking distance including Burgau's famous beach bar and manor house (Casa Grande).
All kinds of leisure boat charter and water sports are available in the nearby town of Lagos (8km away) which is a charming regional market town with cobbled street cafes and buzzing nightlife.
Microlite flights and flight training courses are available at the Algarve Airsports Centre in Lagos. The historic sites of Sagres (home of Henry the Navigator) and Cape St Vincent are nearby.
