5 of 5 stars “Warm, gracious hosts and a quiet setting”
Maison Lavaud is a quiet, cozy place, big enough for a couple or perhaps a family with one or two kids. Younger couples will want to note that the upstairs bedroom is outfitted with twin beds that are rather small to share, and can’t be comfortably pushed together. However, the downstairs couch converts into a double bed and the hosts Joanne, Ian, Susan, and Norman will provide appropriate bed linens.
The setting is gorgeous and peaceful. Although swimming and other recreation are nearby, this is really the place for folks who want to get away and relax. The back yard (garden) has a private sitting area for outdoor dining. You're in farm country here, and now and then you’ll hear a tractor go by. Cars stop at the spring house across the road to fill water jugs, but they're never obtrusive.
The kitchen has a useful assortment of dishes, silverware, and cookware, even a cutting board. Mixing bowls and the like may be stashed in unexpected places. Be sure to check the cabinets over the stove and look on top of the microwave oven.
The hosts will stock the larder with the basics on request, but I recommend checking out the Saturday morning open air market in Saint-Junien for your grocery shopping. Saint-Junien and Bellac also offer your choice of several boulangeries and patisseries for bread and pastries (these are quite a bit more limited in nearer Cieux and Blond). If supermarkets are more your speed, you’ll find a Hyper-U in Saint-Junien and a Carrefour in Bellac. For these your sat-nav is your friend, or get directions from one of the hosts.
Those hosts live in the renovated ex-barn which is attached to the gite, and have mastered the waiter’s fine art of being there when you need them and scarce when you want privacy. We arrived much later than we’d expected and Joanne graciously waited up for us. She also kindly came to our rescue when our car nearly ran out of fuel in Javerdat on a Sunday, and we discovered that US credit cards don’t work in Europe’s 24 hour automated filling stations. They even brought over a couple of homemade treats for us. They're from the UK, so of course communication was never an issue.
Cleanliness of the gite was very good to excellent. Guests are asked to do their own cleaning upon leaving, or pay a modest extra fee for the owners to do it for them. Cleaning supplies are provided.
We really enjoyed our stay at Maison Lavaud and appreciated its owners.
A great week with wonderful hosts, the gite was well equipt and comfortable everything we needed, the views of the garden and the birds was a delight, watching the woodpecker and the jays whilst drinking your glass of wine was a view we hadn't extected. Thanks to Nigel, Sue and Joanne for a wonderful stay and we look forward to the next time.
Thank you so much Jo and Ian for letting us stay in your beautiful hideaway. We had such a peaceful, relaxing stay here - all the comforts of home but none of the stress. It was spotlessly clean and had everything there to make it a special holiday. The twin beds where so comfortable we didn't want to get up in the morning. The woodburner kept us toasty and the heat radiated to the bedroom which made it lovely and warm. Jo and Ian where amazing hosts giving up lots of information on places to visit and to eat. We followed their advice and we were not disappointed. Oradour sur Glane is a most. We couldn't have celebrated our Ruby Wedding Anniversary in a better place. We were sad to leave but came away with two good friends in Jo and Ian. Can't wait to go back.
Some ideas for days out in the area:
There are 3 beaches to choose from on Lac St Pardoux one of which has a watersports centre and is about 30mins away. An hour and a half away is the large Lac Vassiviere with 6 sandy beaches and lots of watersports. The island in the middle of the lake is home to an ambitious Contemporary Art Museum designed by the late Aldo Rossi. Guided tours are available around the lake and the island July - August. Just over an hour away is Lac d'Eguzon with sandy beaches, bars, restaurants and watersports.
Limoges airport is 1/2 hour away. Ryanair operate flights from Liverpool, East Midlands, Stansted, Edinburgh, Bristol and Leeds. Flybe.com fly from Southampton, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham and Gatwick. Car hire at the airport is available from Avis, Hertz, Europcar and National/Citier. A car is essential as the property is located in the countryside.
Cieux is the nearest village and boasts a fine restaurant at the hotel, bar/restaurant, bakers, and a few shops. At St Junien and Bellac you will find large supermarkets, numerous restaurants and delightful shopping areas.
A mobile shop visits the hamlet everyday (including Sundays and bank holidays) and sells everything from eggs to bread.
