Stunning, tranquil and secluded villa situated in the heart of the Umbrian countryside in a wild flower meadow along a private lane. Garden designed to enjoy the sunrise and sunset over the infinity pool. Plenty of room for both outside (two shaded areas) and inside entertaining (a large open plan kitchen/dining area) in peaceful surroundings. Situated close to the centre of Italy just half an hour from Perugia airport. Located a short walk from the local village of Montone which offers bars, excellant restaurants and local shops. Umbria is an undiscovered gem of a region and although easily accessible via air (Ryanair to Perugia) is unspoilt by tourism and offers a genuine taste of Italy. Casella sleeps from 6-8 very comfortably.

We live in Hampshire, England, with 2 sons both of whom have now left home. We have spent many holidays in Italy, particularly in Umbria, where we found Montone, probably the most beautiful hilltop town in Umbria. (Are we biased?)

Why Gill Haworth chose Citta di Castello

We found Casella, a run down farmhouse within walking distance of Montone and vowed to bring it back to its former glory. Encouraged greatly by our sons. This took 3 years of great work by our 2 Italian builders (brothers) and our architect. It was finished in 2007 and we have met the original owner who was delighted with the outcome. Since visiting on many occasions we have made many friends and even celebrated our 60th Birthdays in Montone.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The property is situated on its own hillside 10 minutes walking distance from Montone. The house has 3 bedrooms, 1 with en-suite bathroom, 2 shower rooms, sitting room, dining room and kitchen . Outside there are 2 patios and an infinity pool with lovely views to the south and west. You cannot beat enjoying the wonderful sunsets with a good glass of Italian wine.

Montone boasts all the facilities required, including shops, restaurants and hotels. In nearby Umbertide there are all the facilities of a small town including a good supermarket.

Within easy driving distance you have the towns of Perugia, Gubbio, Assissi,Citta di Castella and Todi, with Lake Trasimeno for aquatic sports. Further afield there is Orvieto and Montefalco, the great wine growing areas of Umbria.

We have just returned from a fantastic week at villa casella in montone. We were very impressed with the standard of the villa and how well equipped it was. We went with our 3 teenage children and one of their friends and we all had a lovely time relaxing around the pool, having barb-ques and playing mammoth games of risk. I am sure we would all love to book again in the near future.

This beautiful property has been totally restored to a high quality finish. If you are looking for a quiet location away from it all this location is for you, not overlooked, yet only a 10 minute walk from the beatiful hilltop village of Montone .2011

The magnificent infinity pool is the feature of the large garden which is more relaxing than you can imagine. Two lovely pergolas to sit under for lunches and dinner watching the sun go down.A five star house in a superb location, we would definately return again. 2010

Gorgeous secluded villa with lovely views

We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful part of Italy. The villa is in a great location with stunning views. It is well laid out and very spacious. The pool is beautiful and we could have spent all day looking at the views! The nearby village of Montone is a 15 minute walk and has lots of great places to eat. There is a fantastic fruit, veg and general groceries shop and a bakery all nearby so it was easy to pick up essentials. The area is great to explore and we would love to return soon. Thanks for a wonderful holiday.

Restored farmhouse in secluded country setting.

We have stayed at La Casella twice, and plan to return again next year. It's such a charming house, which has a very personal feel to it. Our family has been with us both times, and they all love it, especially the grandchildren. The location is fantastic, surrounded by woods and fields. The infinity pool is wonderful, and the gardens are a great feature of the house. Lunch under the arbour in high summer is a special treat. We particularly like the large family kitchen, with its long dining table which easily seats 10 people. There is a dishwasher in the kitchen, and a washing machine upstairs in one of the bathrooms, to make life easier.

The village of Montone is a 12-15 minute walk, partly uphill, and a bit steep in places. I should mention that the track from the road to the house needs some careful negotiating in one or two places, and would not currently be suitable for a low slung sports car. There are some good restaurants and a couple of grocery shops, with a limited range for day to day shopping requirements. The nearby town of Umbertide ( 15 mins drive ) has a large Cooperative supermarket. All in all, a great place for a family holiday!

Spacious, secluded and stunning

La Casella is a lovely large house, genuinely secluded and peaceful. Beautiful aspect. Large grounds with clean and inviting pool and comfortable outdoor seating. A twenty minute walk, including relatively steep parts, up to exceptionally pretty local village, with several good restaurants and a couple of local grocers. Large supermarket is in Umbertide, fifteen minutes drive away. The house itself is secure, well equipped, particularly the kitchen, with small-ish DVD player, three bathrooms ( all with showers.) Plenty of room inside for large group to co-exist comfortably, with scope for people to do different things - cook or sit in kitchen, read or play games in the living room, or rest or read upstairs. Highly recommended.

The property exceeded our expectations in all untypical experience in respect of other rentals. The interior is spacious and comfortable-well finished and well stocked with essentials. The garden and pool area lends itself to al-fresco dining, pure relaxation and has fine vistas. It's completely secluded but close enough to the pristine hill-top village of Montone ( 15-20 min walk ) to remove any concern over isolation. Everything worked- the pool was cleaned every 3 days and the overall ambience was perfect. Perhaps the biggest compliment we can provide is that we felt very much at home. We will definitely return.

What an amazing place this is. We arrived, hot and dusty, after a car journey from Rome (about 3 hours away), to a little piece of heaven. The house is set in a secluded private valley, surrounded by hillsides covered with trees - a most tranquil spot. The pool is sublime - an infinity pool fed by a natural spring on the hillside facing the afternoon sun. And the house is beautiful - lovingly restored and beautifully decorated. We were a family of 6 (three children and one granny, two parents) and it suited us perfectly. The kitchen is fully fitted and has plenty of space - more than enough room to dine, play games and even dance! There is a sitting room with a tv (which we never used, the attractions of the pool being way too tempting), a downstairs shower room (useful for after the pool). Upstairs, there is a generous landing (with a sofa bed), a lovely family bathroom with washing machine (essential for our holidays), two lovely twin bedrooms and the most fantastic main bedroom with ensuite bathroom and views across the valley and the pool. The beds were beautifully comfortable. Overall, the house was big enough that we never felt that we were tripping over each other or in each other's space, which is essential with two pre-teen children and one very bouncy 7 year old. Lots of space to find your own corner if needed, but plenty of communal space to chill out together too.

The house just worked for us. By far the nicest place we have ever rented for a summer holiday!

And Montone is just the most perfect Italian hill town. Not only is it beautiful, but it also has a vibrant local community. We walked to town most evenings for a pre-dinner spritz at the local bar, which was buzzing with locals, chatting, playing cards, and generally hanging out. There are four decent restaurants - we had a lovely romantic dinner whilst granny babysat one evening, and I could recommend them all. Lovely to go in truffle season!

The walk into town, although up hill, was pleasant and took no more than 15 minutes even with my 70 yr old mother. Walking back home with torches was great fun, especially for the children!

We did a little bit of exploring the local area, but as we know it fairly well, we were mostly content to stay 'at home' with excursions to Montone and Umbertide for supplies.

We would wholeheartedly recommend Casella - and definitely hope to return ourselves SOON. It just ticked all the boxes for a fantastic family holiday.

15-20 minute walk to the medieval village of Montone. Eating locally is a real pleasure good choice of restaurants and bars. The village has a variety of shops including a grocer, butchers and bakery. Umbertide the local market town is a 20 minute drive.Casella is centrally placed for exploring well known cities in Umbria and Tuscany, Perugia (43km), Assisi (54km), Gubbio (38km), Cortona (45km), Citta di Castello (18km), Anghiari and Sansepolcro (36km), Siena (95km) and Lago Trasimeno (40km).

Markets in the area:


(Palazzo della Prefettura, in summer, Rocca Paolina, in winter, - last weekend of the month). The main attraction here are ceramics, from the most precious to the most utilitarian, all colorfully decorated with patterns in use for centuries. Antique costume jewelry is another highlight.

Bastia Umbra-

(Piazza Mazzini, Sunday before the 21st in March, June, September and December). In case you didn't figure out the puzzle, this market takes place at the beginning of each of the four seasons, to which it is dedicated. The fifty stands sell small inexpensive items, mostly, against the backdrop of the 14th-century church of Santa Croce.

Castiglione del Lago-

(Piazza Gramsci, third Saturday of the month, April to September). Another great place to find the wonderful local ceramics, along with antique archery equipment. The lovely little town overlooks Lake Trasimeno.
