I don't know which came first - falling in love with Gozo or my Maltese husband!

After spending ten years working around the world and living out of a suitcase, I admit to being less than excited about being sent to Malta. With visions of crumbling buildings, endless churches and a slow pace of life, I was unprepared for the vibrancy and beauty of these islands. Infact, I actually loved them so much that I ended up moving there and marrying one of the locals.

Now, several years later, we are lucky enough to own two beautiful apartments, one in the idyllic seafront village of Xlendi and the other in the tranquil country village of Gharb, both of which we have furnished with considerable thought and effort to reflect the peace and character of these islands.

We have succeeded by creating a haven of peace and relaxation; a place to generally kick back and unwind. We have named our properties 'Azure and Scenic Escapes' as they really are an escape from the rest of the world. As one of our guests summed up, 'It was always a pleasure to return there at the end of each day'.

We named our property “Scenic Escapes” for its picturesque country location; somewhere where you can unwind and escape everyday life for a while. Our apartment building “Ta’Gaglione” was designed by a renowned local architect and is built from the Gozitan creamy limestone to create a small exclusive development of just 8 apartments. We offer good quality self catering accommodation in an ideal location, being on the edge of this peaceful traditional village, yet only a five minute walk to the village centre. Gharb is a historic local village with the community centred around the picturesque church square, which frequently plays host to local events involving music, dancing and plenty of food where all are made to feel welcome. Nearby is the celebrated Ta’Pinu cathedral, while the Azure Window and Blue Hole diving site are just 3km away and the quaint capital Victoria can be reached in 5 minutes by car or bus.

There are several restaurants within a few minutes walk and some friendly local bars in addition to a well stocked supermarket for those nights when you want to eat in. With a tastefully decorated bedroom and bathroom, cosy living area with balcony, swimming pool with sunny deck area overlooking open countryside together with numerous guide books and local information, our apartment offers you a peaceful retreat whatever time of year you choose to visit.

About Elaine Meli

As my husbands family still live in Malta, we have been regular visitors to the islands since I lured him away from the sunshine to live in the UK many years ago. He claims he is still waiting for summer to arrive! Needing a bolthole from the hecticness that comes with being part of a large and noisy Mediterranean family, we bought our first property in Xlendi in 2003. It's only when various friends asked if they could stay that we thought maybe renting was the way to go. The overwhelming interest took us by surprise, so we felt more confident in buying our second property in 2007, this time with a pool, because us Brits do love to swim in a pool rather than the sea! Desperately not wanting to fall into the pot of cliches, but both places truly are magical, charming and sooo relaxing.

Why Elaine Meli chose Ghasri

Gharb is just so traditional Gozitan; there is nothing touristy about this village. There are frequent events taking place in the parish church square where it seems as though the whole village has turned out. There is an annual BBQ when each household turns up with their their family recipe offerings; you can only begin to imagine how much food there is! Gharb is surrounded by greenery with many different walks available from right outside the apartment door, including one of our family favourites up to the little chapel of St Dimitri that has far reaching views over the island. It is a quiet village so a car is probably necessary if you want to travel further than Victoria, or else you are very fit and don't mind walking everywhere.

What makes this apartment unique

The apartment is in a very peaceful location and feels very exclusive. There are little extras in the development that feel very homely; like the library of books in the hallway for example. It is very well kept and presented and exceptionally clean. The apartment itself is very stylish and well thought out and is a comfortable base from which to explore this little gem of an island. There are only 8 apartments in the development, and only one is lived in permanently by a retired English couple, while the rest are second homes, so the pool is never crowded, even in summer.

This little apartment was perfect - it had everything I needed for making my own meals and more. The space was very clean on arrival and there were no surprises, it is as described. The balcony is a nice luxury and the Ta' Pinu church, a 10 minute walk away, is not to be missed! Thank you to the owners for putting so much care into every detail of this apartment! Notes on accommodation: We have compiled a comprehensive information pack for our guests use with maps, restaurant, walking and rock climbing guides. Free broadband WIFI is included in the price. The apartment is on the first floor and there is a lift. We are a non-smoking family and would ask all of our guests to respect this and not smoke in our apartment. Outside: The outside pool and deck are spacious with pretty planted gardens and plenty of space for sun loungers. The deck area overlooks untouched countryside; it is quiet and peaceful and a perfect spot for relaxing in the beautiful sunshine. As the pool is shared only between the 8 apartments, most of which are weekend homes for Maltese couples, it is not crowded. The pool is a constant 3m depth with a handrail at one end. Children must be supervised at all times. Utility Room: Thick fleecy blankets and extra pillows are provided to ensure a cosy home atmosphere for those cooler months - not that there are many! As we do not have to rely on solar power, there is always plenty of hot water for relaxing baths or showers. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels (not pool or beach) and linen are included in the price. The property is thoroughly cleaned on a weekly basis.

Well sited for Gozo with pool

We spent a lovely week at the end of summer based in this well equipped flat in Gharb. It was well positioned on Gozo to visit the whole island, leaving the whole day to take advantage of the amazing sites, history and beaches the island has to offer. The apartment was well equipped with a full kitchen and separate bedroom and though not air conditioned had two fans which did the job!

Adding to this a warm pool which, although was shared, was not used by the other residents when we were there so was effectively a private pool.

Gharb has at least three friendly bars/restaurants where we spent a few evenings and the rabbit stew at Il- Kunvent was gorgeous!

All in all, a good, comfortable stay.

It's great that you found the fans effective during the summer heat and were comfortable. As you said the pool can often feel like it's for private use as it is not often in use as most of the other apartments are also second homes. So you are getting great value for money.

Peacefull retreat

A lovely property in a quiet location perfect for a break away from the noise and bustle. Great walks and lots of maps and info left in the apartment.

The flat was clean and cosy and had lots of little extras which made it feel like a home rather than a rental.

Very friendly village - great Pizzeria and little shop with an old-fashioned friendly feel.

Even though Gharb is a bit out, most places (e.g. Azure window, Marsalforn and salt pans etc.) are within walking distance - and if not, the buses are great.

Would recommend it for anyone looking for a low stress holiday.

Gharb is the westerly village on Gozo meaning it's away from the hustle and bustle but as mentioned the buses are great and inexpensive and a bus journey is a price worth paying for the slow peaceful pace you experience in this traditional village.

An ideal winter warmer!

This is an ideal apartment for a couple who want to have a dose of winter sunshine. A perfect little escape for 2!

We have just returned from 10 days where the temperature didn't go below 70 degrees. It is located in Gharb to the west if the island, but as Gozo is small you are never more than 10 minutes away from a number of attractions.

There are several bars and restaurants within easy walking distance, and there is also the Kempinski hotel for afternoon tea and cocktails at very special rates!

The apartment itself is ideal for a couple with good quality furniture, and all mod cons if you want to cook in.

The owner provides excellent customer service and is UK based. This is the third winter we have spent at the apartment and we would certainly recommend it to a friend, who would really enjoy the sunshine on the balcony all day long! Looking forward to 2017!

Good space and location, well used

The property is in Gharb which is one of the nicest Villages on Gozo (we visited most) with several restaurants (Rangers very good) within easy walking distance or by bus (in Victoria).

For two guests the space was perfect - the seating arrangements were not comfortable ie sofa beds. Eating was around breakfast bar stools - we didn't use these and would have preferred a table.

The property was as described and also was clean on arrival, fairly basic for self catering which we didn't do much of. We had a couple of issues due to a longer stay than usual that were dealt with during our stay by the owner.

The property is on one of the main roads through the village - this was normally very quiet but work traffic can start early which with the windows open can prevent a 'lie in'.

We did use the (shared) swimming pool and note the following:

no-one shared it !

it is 2.6m deep so not for paddling !

in Oct it is in the shade - but the seats are in the sun !

there are some improvements that could be made but overall we enjoyed our holiday in Gharb

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your feedback which, as always, is very valuable and acted upon. We have now replaced the sofa beds with a brand new double version, which has been well received and complimented as very comfortable. The apartment is at the front of the building on the first floor but Triq Ta'Sdieri is actually a side street, not a main road as indicated. The work traffic mentioned I have since been told was when a local church was being repaired so there was more passing traffic through the village than usual. Gharb is one of the quietest villages on Gozo so this noise is not usual. I'm glad you had private use of the shared swimming pool, this is actually a fairly common occurrence as most of the other apartments are also second homes, so the pool is often all yours to use. We are planning a week in Malta at the end of January to carry out an inspection of both properties and any necessary repairs and upgrades, in addition to the ongoing maintenance of the apartments.

Disappointing neglected tired apartment & pool. Holiday ruined lack of cooperation from owner.

we went to for a swim on day 1, the pool was disgusting full of flies & dead Gecko. No pool net a fishing net we got some out but decided not to swim as the ph balance could be wrong. The pool was obviously neglected & no sun hit the pool the entire day while we were there. I emailed the owner the next day when no filter had been on all day also the pool vac (creepy crawler) was left in permanently but not in use. Handy for flies to cling to the white pipe. Didn't expect an answer from the owner as no reply to two previous emails. She did reply the following day so day 3 of our holiday. Someone in the building put the filter on & pool vac for a few hours. We were advised to pull the pool vac out of the water really expensive piece of equipment to break ! Dirt soon built up again over the next few days of no pool filter or vac in use, also no ph balance test done. First morning and each following weekday morning we were woken at 7.45 by a local sales van peeping his horn & shouting out of the window (advised by locals that they sold bread fish etc). We went to cook a meal as there is no oven in the property we bought things to be cooked on the hob. We got the pans out & frying pan they were so dirty with ground in dirt on the two pans available. No non stick left on the frying pan. We could not use so no cooking could be done while we stayed. We tried cleaning them but it was so ground in also the knife set & blunt scissors were in the same state. The freezer was so full of frost it could not be used. So rather than stay in to sit on the uncomfortable couches with the thin cushions, which by the way all need a good wash as do the curtains. Also the uncomfortable table & chairs on the balcony & short bed & slow shower. We went out most of the time. I have been emailing the owner who has told me even though she was not there & I was that the pool was fine. I have pictures of all the complaints except the flies & Gecko. I paid for use of the pool & didn't get use of it, it was disgusting. I would not recommend this apartment as it is of a very low standard. I had to show pictures of proof. She said she has replaced Items but not shown me proof. No help to me now my holiday is ruined. I have never given a bad review before we have always been happy with our apartments/villas/pools. We left two days early to salvage something out our 8days. I have paid for goods and not received them. I hope this review helps you enjoy your holiday with your continued search.

Owner's Response: It's never pleasant to receive negative feedback but as can be seen from the consistently high reviews we receive on this and other sites including Trip Advisor, we rarely receive any complaints. We have been renting our apartments for over 12 years with many repeat guests and have never had issues with the items that have been mentioned. The only issue this guest raised when she was actually staying in the apartment, regarding the pool, was addressed within an hour. We were only advised of the other complaints after she returned, which is a shame as we were not given the opportunity to rectify any problems during her stay. We take the comfort of our guests very seriously and investigate all complaints to ensure a high standard is maintained. It is unfortunate this guest felt the need to complain however, as can be seen, there are many guests who have a wonderful stay in our apartment and return to us again and again.

Lovely apartment in a quiet spot, just what you need to recharge the batteries. Walking distance to some good restaurants and very friendly neighbours. The garden was a delight and we seemed to be the only ones that used it. Thank you Elaine we will be back.

Just under a couple of miles away next to Dwerja and the magnificent Azure Window, you can swim at the Inland Sea, where the sea has cut into the cliffs to form a shallow, sheltered salt water pool with pebbly crystal clear water. Ramla Bay is a magnificent sweep of red sand on the north of the island, there are also several rocky coves for secluded swimming and several good sandy beaches on the north west of Malta. The Blue Lagoon in Comino is beautiful and is easily reached by public ferry.


Fly to Malta's International Airport from London Heathrow/Gatwick in just 3-3½ hours. Malta is also served by numerous other large European airports and is very well connected. Air fares can start from as little as £50 plus tax per person.


We are approx 7 mins by car from the capital Victoria and 20 mins to Mgarr harbour and the ferry to Malta. We are just 7 minutes from Dwerja and the Azure Window and only 15 minutes from the red sandy bay of Ramla and the prehistoric temples of Ggantija. The famous cathedral of Ta'Pinu is just 2 minutes down the road.

Transfers to Gozo. There are several options as detailed: For a stress free start to your holiday, we can organise private transfers from Malta airport direct to our apartment. Please contact us for a quote. Alternatively there is a public bus service from 4.50 euros (£3.40) per person to Cirkewwa where you can catch the regular Gozo ferry. The ferry runs frequently (approx every 45 mins) and costs 4.75 euro (£3.60) per foot passenger. The crossing takes around 25 mins. The other option is to hire a car at Malta's airport. Car hire is amongst the cheapest in Europe, with prices starting from 18 euros (£14) per day. Contact us for a quote. Whichever mode of transport you choose, it is a scenic journey along the coast road and the ferry has excellent facilities including a magazine kiosk and cafeteria. The total transfer time should not exceed an hour and a half.

Gharb Village, our apartment is located on the edge of this peaceful inland village but within a short walk of local restaurants, grocery shops and bars. We are a 10 mins walk to the shrine of Ta'Pinu, probably the most revered church on the Maltese Islands; a very interesting folklore museum and a glass blowing shop selling samples of the local art, the beauty of which will rival those found in Venice at half the price! There are some excellent restaurants for a village of this size with a choice of pasta, local cuisine, fish and seafood.

Gozo is home to some beautiful peaceful beaches, sleepy villages, prehistoric temples older than Stonehenge, the legend of the goddess Calypso and some of the most spectacular diving sites in the Mediterranean. Wander around the baroque modern day capital Valletta, peruse the delights of colourful Marsaxlokk and its famous Sunday market; amble through the medieval 'silent city' of Mdina for breathtaking views or unwind in one of the award winning spas. Booking Notes:
A 25% non refundable deposit is required to confirm your booking. The balance is due 8 weeks before your departure plus a security deposit of £100 for breakages/damages. Please note there is an Environment tax that the Maltese government introduced in June 2016 that will be added to your invoice.
