Aigua Blava is a sought after holiday location in an unspoilt, attractive pine-forested region of the Costa Brava, 1 hour's drive south of the French border and Gerona airport. This area is known a 'Catalunya Verda' with pine forests, a stunning, rocky shoreline and many small bays and sandy beaches. The Es Cau apartments are situated very near the famous Aigua Blava 4 star Hotel with its excellent restaurant offering superb cuisine, and a beautiful location to relax and enjoy a refreshing drink.

About Ian and Philippa Peacock

This delightful apartment in Es Cau, Aigua Blava, overlooking the Mediterranean, has been in the ownership of the Bland family since 1974. The property was bought by the parents of the current owners (the daughters) who fell in love with Aigua Blava, after enjoying many stays at the famous nearby family run Hotel Aigua Blava, during the 50’s and 60’s.

The apartment continues to be a much loved family holiday home for the Bland family where 2nd and 3rd generations of ‘Blands’ continue to enjoy the magic of this beautiful unspoilt corner of the Costa Brava which has remained largely unchanged over the years. The rugged coast line with stunning bays and views are spectacular. Aigua Blava has a unique charm and many holidaymakers are held in its spell returning year after year.

We can walk to a local shop to buy fresh bread each morning and there is also a pizzeria within walking distance. The nearby village of Begur is an old historic town, full of character with many artisan shops. Palafrugell is a larger market town with a daily food market (meat, fish and vegetables) and a weekly clothes market. We enjoy a relaxing coffee or cerveza in the local square after sampling the delights of the market and visiting ‘Serra’ a wonderful delicatessen.

‘We had a wonderful time at Aigua Blava. The apartment was very comfortable and we all soon felt at home. Es Cau is in a lovely setting and our daughter enjoyed exploring around the rock pool and the walks along to the beaches. There are plenty of places to visit nearby. All in all we had a great holiday and would recommend the apartment to future holidaymakers’

Coast/Beach:

Platja Fonda is a deep beach with access down a long flight of steps and has good swimming and secluded sunbathing (5 minutes walk). Platja Aigua Blava is a sheltered, sandy, shallow beach, ideal for children, with a bar and 2 beach restaurants (5 minutes drive or 20 minutes walk by coastal path). There is a swimming/sunbathing platform next to the Es Cau rock pool, and another close to the nearby Aigua Blava Hotel.

Travel:

By air - Gerona airport (1 hour), Barcelona airport (2 hours) or Perpignon airport (1.5 hours).

By road - take the motorway from La Jonquera on the Franco-Spanish border and the C252 (about 1 hour from the border)

By rail - Motorail to Narbonne or RENFE to Gerona station and taxi to the flat (about £10).

By coach, SARFA from Barcelona (2 hours) or Gerona city centre (1 hour) to Begur, and taxi to Aigua Blava.

Car hire is not essential but recommended.

Further Details:

Sports facilities: the area offers excellent swimming and snorkelling, windsurfing, waterskiing, sailing and scuba-diving, plus an extensive network of well marked local footpaths for walkers. The majestic Pyrenees (1.5 hours drive) offer hill walking, climbing pony-trekking, hang-gliding and skiing in season.

Culture: Catalunya has an unbroken history stretching back to the Phoenician, Greek and Roman empires. The area is steeped in history with many areas of archaeological interest. Worth visiting are the sites at Ampuries and Ullastret, the medieval hill towns of Peratallada and Pals, the wonderful Salvador Dali museun at Figueras, and Barcelona, one of the most fascinating and fun cities in Europe. Locally, the town of La Bisbal is unique - an entire town dedicated to the creation and sale of ceramics.

Local services: there is a small but well-stocked supermarket a few minutes walk from the apartment, as well as several bars and restaurants. Begur (2.5 miles) is a small, buzzy hill town with bars, cafes, excellent restaurants and fashionable shops. Palafrugell (5 miles) is a lively market town with a wide selection of shops and services, including the emergency clinic, banks, police station and a picturesque central square where you can relax with a coffee, drink or delicious meal at one of the many cafes and restaurants while enjoying the local festivities. The superb daily food market is open from 8.00am - 1.00pm (except Mondays) offering a vast range of fresh produce. Normal shopping hours are 8.00am - 1.00pm and 4.00pm - 8.00pm.

Notes on accommodation: The apartment has fitted heaters in the living room and in the two larger bedrooms and a radiator in the main bathroom. These heating arrangements enable the apartment to be enjoyed all the year round. Outside: The sitting room and main bedroom open onto a large balcony overlooking the gardens with beautiful sea views, furnished with tables, chairs, lamps and a hanging curtain to provide shade if required. There is a small back balcony which catches the sun at the end of the day. The gardens lead down to a salt water swimming pool (open mid June/mid September). The apartment has its own garage. Utility Room: The washing machine located outside the kitchen, built-in on the back balcony with a louvered door. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are included. The property is cleaned at each changeover.
