About Maria Christina
We came to live in Italy from the UK almost 10 years ago now, a move that was initially fueled by some health issues our son was experiencing We fell in love with and bought the property mainly due to its fabulous views with a vision of what it could become rather than what it was at the time following the theory that you can change pretty much most things except for the location of a property. The property became a restoration project which involved the moving of volume, replacing of beams, floors, a total overhaul since it had in the past been an agricultural-tobacco tower, a project which at times caused great stress. The area is truly breathtaking and is also called a "hidden gem" by those who know the area since it is one of the lesser known valleys of the Valtiberina running parallel to the better known Niccone and Morra valleys. The views in the morning in particular are breathtaking and those of you who don't know this part of Umbria will be amazed by its beauty and authenticity.
Maria Christina purchased this Villa in 2004
Why Maria Christina chose Città di Castello
With superb, panoramic views, Villa Quercia provides the perfect balance between relaxation, peace and tranquility and seeing the sights in a most wonderful and yet very traditional setting. The ideal setting for your holiday yet within 30 minutes you can take in some of the bests sights of the area. The property is situated on the border of Umbria and Tuscany and provides the perfect location for exploring both of these regions. The pool is really amazing, very large 16m x 6m so you can do some real lengths and saline water is just so much nicer than chlorine and we have now also made it into a heated pool which will make it one of the best pools in the area, everyone loves it! The layout of the property is ideal for friends and family wanting to spend time together yet at times be apart as there is enough space here to do this with 3 lounging areas not to mention the various terraces and the fact that each bedroom has its own private bathroom is just bliss. And not to forget there are some great family run restaurants only a short distance away several 5-10 minutes away. A great place from where to experience this wonderful part of Italy.
What makes this Villa unique
Above average sized 16m x 5m, saline (very small amount of chlorine) pool. Big enough for some real swimming as well as playing (we have also had guests play water polo in the pool as large enough). We have now also made this wonderful pool into a heated pool, heated with solar panels and thereby taking the "edge" off during the shoulder months and at times when the weather is not perfect. Each bedroom has its own bathroom (4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms) and they are all of a good standard with lovely sanitary wear. The property is large enough (very spacious) so that you may spend time together, however, with a downstairs lounge, an upstairs lounge, the covered terrace and outside seating on the lower level, there is plenty of space to also be apart when you want to be. The layout of the villa is such that the upstairs bedrooms are very separate from the downstairs bedrooms, and hence is ideal also for families or friends who have slightly different timings, since occupants of the downstairs bedrooms will not disturb those upstairs. Being situated on the Tuscan-Umbrian border Villa Quercia is ideal for visiting both of these wonderful parts of Italy. You can walk into Tuscany withing 15 minutes and hence this truly provides the perfect location for you to explore the Umbrian hill top towns and villages and at the same time take in some of the Tuscan gems such as Cortona (only 25 minutes drive away) and Arezzo. The owners live close by and are at hand in case of any problems and advice. Should you wish to take cookery lessons, go on a winery tour, have a massage, play tennis, go horse-riding and much more we are able to help you with any of these. Last but not least the unique covered terrace from which to enjoy truly wonderful views. The perfect place to avoid the sun during the day and to relax in the evenings with a glass of wine or two. Just heavenly!! There is also free wifi throughout the villa
Canceled bookings will not receive a refund
A beautiful location
This property is in a beautiful location with wonderful views from the property and terrace , making starlight dining a real treat!! It is in a very peaceful location but accessibility to shops and restaurants was easy.
The swimming pool is exceptional, being large and well maintained.
It is extremely well located on the Tuscany Umbria border with many beautiful towns, villages, monasteries and churches to visit .
A great venue for a relaxing holiday.
Cocooning for a week
We rented this beautiful place for a week with friends, so there were 7 of us. Christina and Richard were delightful when they welcomed us on arrival. The house and garden look like in the photos. We loved the huge pool and the fact that there were enough lounge chairs for all of us and shade, too. The surroundings are very tranquil and quiet, and we loved that we could hike straight from the house. It was so beautiful to sit in one of several outdoor spaces to relax or to watch the incredible night sky. We would love to come back some day.
Thank you Manon for your lovely review, it is always nice to hear when guests have enjoyed their stay and the area. We would very much like the opportunity to welcome you again and hope to be able to do so in the not too distant future. Wishing you all the best. Christina
Very nice villa
We rented this home last May for 9 nights.
The directions the owner had sent us, were very good and the villa was easy to find.
We were looking very much forward to our stay however, the weather was for almost the entire stay, cold, windy and rainy.
When we reached the house, the rooms were very cold, and we also found out quickly that neither the heat nor the hot water heater worked. However, with the help of the owner Christina and the, absolutely fabulous, caretaker Giovanna, this problem was solved fairly quickly.
Due to the cold weather, we were very concerned about a high heating bill, and relied entirely on the wood stove. For that same reason, we chose not to use the back of the house nor the downstairs.
The online pictures depict the house very well. The house was very clean and had all the basics.
One thing I would like to point out is, that the kitchen is downstairs, something we did not expect and which wasn’t clear in the photos. Someone with mobility issues will find that very difficult to deal with.
The house is perfect for two couples. Two big bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. Downstairs 2 more bedrooms also with en-suite bathrooms.
I can only imagine how nice it could have been, if it would have been warm outside.
The saltwater pool looked incredibly nice, but unfortunately it was too cold to use it.
I gave the location 2 stars, because it takes one hour to drive to Assisi, 45 minutes to Cortona on a small mountain road. 1 hr30min to the wine country and almost 2 hours to Siena. Double those times for round-trip. We spend so much time on the road, that it cut seriously into our time to sightsee.
Then again, if you just want to take a couple of sightseeing trips close by, and enjoy your time at the house, it is a great location.
All in all, I would recommend this house however, if you want to sightsee, be aware of a long hours you will spend on the road. I truly wish somebody would have brought that up in prior reviews.
A huge shout out to Giovanna. She is incredibly nice, helpful and extremely efficient. She made our stay as enjoyable as possible.
Dear Sabine, unfortunately May 2019 was the coldest, wettest May in 40 years, highly unusual and I am truly sorry that you did not have better weather as the weather can sadly ruin a holiday. Giovanna had been up to the house the previous day to put on heating and wood-burner but I believe that temperatures had dropped to - 4 over night and hence when you arrived the following day the house was cold. I have spoken with the electrician and we still do not know why the boiler kept tripping and stopped working, however I am really pleased that you felt that the issue was resolved quickly as unforeseen problems invariably do happen the important thing is that they are resolved quickly. I believe the Electrician came the following morning and during the first day (Sunday) Giovanna's son who also is an electrician sorted something provisional out and of course the wood-burner in the sitting room means that it is nice and cosy there.
As to distances, I would say that to Cortona it takes 30 minutes and the same goes for Citta' di Castello and Umbertide and to Gubbio and Assisi 50 minutes. Guests have often commented on how well placed the property is as it is in the middle of everything. One thing is true that people in general and Americans in particular, unless they have been to Italy before, do not realize the distances in Italy since there are mountains and hills everywhere and roads often are windy and narrow. However, this is also the charm and beauty of Italy with amazingly spectacular scenery and wonderful hilltop towns. On the whole I would say that within a 1 hour radius from the property there are a vast array of places to visit without having to go further afield, the area around the Villa is steeped in history, and then if you want to go further afield such as Sienna or even Rome (best to go by train) you can do so in a day and people often do. I am always happy to advise on best ways to get to and from and where to visit. We have a good friend (details in our handbook) who organizes winery tours in the area without having to travel far. On a usual holiday you would probably spend a day or part of the day by the pool and then do some sight seeing, the fact that you had such terrible weather would have meant that you had no time relaxing by the pool which I feel very sorry about. I am very pleased you gave Giovanna such glowing reviews as it is so important to have good people in place when you are not able to be around yourself.
This is a great house
This is a great house, the layout of the villa flows very easily with outdoor sitting area leading into indoor sitting area and then more relaxing areas on the lower floor. Everything was very easy to use with no complicated frills, clean lines yet really comfortable and beautiful. The directions to the property were perfect and the caretakers of the villa were lovely with the owners also at hand if required.
Getting up the first morning and sitting in the sunshine looking down the valley was just amazing, we have been to some stunning locations but the views are some of the best we have ever seen, moving form there was difficult. The house is close to a good but not busy road, then up a little back road, so not far but far enough for it to be quiet and peaceful. Perfect for relaxation but not so difficult to go and see the sights and easy to get to some really nice local restaurants.
The pool is superb, like the house with simple clean lines but is very very large so you can really swim and the saline water was just lovely and the fact that it was heated was perfect as we came in mid September. Worked brilliantly for all of us and in fact it is one of the best houses we have ever been to and we will certainly be back!
We had a great time during our stay. The villa was a little out of the way but once found didn't present a problem. We may have given it 5 stars but unfortunately previous renters had left it a bit messy. Also the single beds were really children's beds and were uncomfortable for adults.
The villa is located in fabulous Umbrian countryside with spectacular views within 5 minutes drive (20 minutes walk) to the local village with 2 bars and a small village shop. The nearest town with 2 supermarkets, banks, and all amenities is a 10 minute drive away and Citta di Castello, Umbertide, Cortona are all a 30 minute drive away. There are 5 restaurants all 5 - 15 minutes drive away. I apologise for any mess left by previous guests, normally our cleaning lady is spot on and leaves everything immaculately. Unfortunately whereas I am normally around to check before new guest arrive we had to leave for the UK as my daughter was starting University and also my mother in law was not very well. And unfortunately as the last guests of a long season (we had started in May) the house by then perhaps is not as pristine as it is at the beginning of the season which is also reflected in the price, I believe I gave you the villa at a very good price. Although no one has mentioned the two single beds as not being comfortable I have made note of this and in fact was intending to replace these beds for the next season. I hope you had a good remainder of your trip.
We had a wonderful stay at Villa Quercia. The property is in a great position and has everything you need for a relaxed stay in the heart of Umbria but also close enough to nearby towns for cultural trips as well. In particular we loved Cortona which is only a short drive through the hills and Mortone was lovely too.
We spent most of our time on the large shady and covered terrace which looks over the garden and pool and where the owners have placed sofas and comfy chairs, just perfect for any time of day and the views were just amazing plus the was a lovely cooling breeze as it is on a hillside. We ate most of our meals on the terrace just outside the kitchen, frequently bbq'ing and regularly went to the excellent but really cheap local restaurants. Michelin starred is available in Citta di Castello but we like local Umbrian fare.
The kids and adults all adored the superb and huge pool and played lots of ping pong. We also enjoyed the board games and CD,s provided by Richard and Christina. The best thing though was the heated pool. We have stayed at other villas with pools outside the heat of summer and they have been cold but this one has solar heating and a proper cover so it was warm all the time. As there were eight of us we were worried about being on top of each other but there were lots of different areas to relax in. The kids had a different lounge so their PCs were all plugged into another area. We had a memorable stay and would recommend it to anyone. One of our best ever holidays and thanks!
Trestina (10 minutes away) is situated in an agricultural area made wealthy from the Tobacco plant and is a very lively small town hosting its own festival in June every year. It has several bars and restaurants, 2 supermarkets, post-office, banks and other amenities together with the best place for ice-cream in the area.
The village where the villa is situated is still very much a working and very alive village with a small shop and two bars. A small van comes in the mornings to deliver bread to the shop and guests may buy fresh bread there should they wish to. There is also a van selling fresh fruit and vegetables which comes into the village every Friday morning.
You may enjoy that one of the bars is a walking distance away and you may like to take a walk down for a prosecco or an ice cream and to soak in the local atmosphere.
The area is truly stunning with breathtaking countryside and yet very close to many wonderful places to visit. The local villages and towns (often being hilltop towns) are lovely and very picturesque and over the period of April to November many wonderful festivals take place such as the Calendimaggio in Assisi in the month of May, the Ceri in Gubbio also in May, and the truffel fair in Citta' di Castello which usually takes place in November.
During the summer months there are more festivals, predominantly music than you can wish for, with the most famous one of course being Umbria Jazz in Perugia always in July with many international and local guests. A wonderful event where the entire city is taken over by musicians for the week, many street artists participate and you can either pay to see one of the better known artists or just walk around the city and listen to some wonderful music. A must for music lovers.
Not to forget Trasimeno Blues by lake Trasimeno, and the Festival delle Nazione in Citta di Castello at the end of August which is a wonderful classical music event hosting many internationally known musicians.
These are only a few of the wonderful festivals that take place in the region, there are just too many to list. If there is anything in particular that would interest you please let me know and I will be happy to provide more information.
Citta di Castello is a very pretty medieval walled city with some lovely sites. A great piazza, a wonderful cathedral and some spectacular churches, one hosting a Raphael, and lots of events happening during the summer months as well as very good market twice a week not to mention the numerous bars and restaurants. Every Thursday shops stay open till midnight during the summer months and the town is buzzing with musical events in the piazza .
The area called the Upper Tiber Valley is very beautiful and still very unspoiled. Being right on the Umbrian / Tuscan border you are able to easily visit both of these areas. With Arezzo close by, Perugia to the south, Lake Trasimeno 30 minutes away, Montone (said to be one of the most beautiful hilltop villages in Italy close by), Cortona made famous through the book and film (Under the Tuscan sun) and Castiglion Fiorentino both approx. 30 minutes away and a spectacular drive through the hills.
The area is ideal for those of you who wish to just relax by a beautiful pool, but also equally suited to the more active visitor with many wonderful areas to discover.
And if you or the children are more into sports there is a tennis court for hire in Trestina (10min.), a large tennis club in Umbertide (25min) where you can have lessons or the kids may wish to participate in the kids club run during the summer months. Canoeing in Citta di Castello (again they run kids clubs), sailing on lake Trasimeno, horse-riding near buy, fishing in the local lakes and rivers, cookery classes or winery tours.
All of these and more can be arranged and we would be happy to help you with any of these, just ask..
