About Mo Hamill

My partner Ed and I took early retirement from careers in teaching and social work in 2002 and moved from Bournemouth in Dorset to Bricquebec in Normandy where we renovated a house from which we ran a Chambre D'hotes for several years. One day whilst out collecting mushrooms in the forest we came across a very dilapidated ruin which was just crying out to be restored and after just under two years of hard work Maison du Marais emerged from the ruins. We fondly refer to it as Mushroom Cottage.

We then sold the house from which we ran the Chambre D'hotes and moved into Maison du Marais which became our home for two years.

After nine very enjoyable years living in France circumstances necessitated a move back to the u.k. but we still visit as often as we can.

Mo Hamill purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Mo Hamill chose Besneville

Part of the reason for choosing this region was its easy access to the ferry in Cherbourg and being able to return to Dorset quickly in order to be available to help family.

The peace and quiet of the region compared to the hustle and bustle of town life is just so relaxing.

There are not many areas where you can find miles of empty beaches with wonderful scenary and even in the height of summer nowhere is too crowded.

What makes this cottage unique

The benefits of the cottage are its peaceful position yet it is only a few kilometres away from the nearest shops and beaches. It's well equipped as it was our home and has been left so that you might find it the same. Just amble along the lane and climb to the top of Mont Besneville where, on a clear day you can see both coasts. A little further along the lane is an entrance to the forest where you can ramble to pathways and in the Autumn pick mushrooms

Guestbook comments from the manager

We very much enjoyed our stay in your lovely house. Interesting to recall on the tranquil beaches those dangerous days of 1944.

Notes on accommodation: There are electric convector heaters throughout the property and a log burner in the sitting room. Logs and electricity are included in the rental price. We also provide a stylish butane gas heater for those extra chilly evenings but ask guests to take responsibility for refilling bottles. The cottage has been furnished and decorated to a standard where it can be used as a permanent home therefore it may not be ideal for very young children. Whilst pets are welcome (we love them) we would like them to be well behaved and not be allowed to sit on the furniture! Unfortunately, we would have to make a charge for any damage done. Please leave the property in the condition in which you found it, failure to do so will result in an extra charge for cleaning which will be taken from the security deposit. Outside: The garden is to the front and side of the property and is planted with fruit trees. There is a small gazebo in the garden for those quiet times in which to enjoy a glass of wine and watch the world go by. There is a garden table, chairs, sun umbrella and BBQ. The garden leads on to a lane which, in turn, leads to the forest and Mont Besneville. These are only a few hundred yards away giving you plenty of open spaces to roam. The garden is not enclosed by fencing so children and dogs could wander onto the lane (very quiet) if not supervised. Utility Room: There is a small utility area which contains a large washing machine plus a tumble dryer. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bedding, towels & tea towels are provided ( A discount of £50 is made if you bring your own) The cottage is prepared prior to every let but we expect guests to leave it as they find it. Additional cleaning service is available at a cost of £40. Other: The large, dining table seats up to 10 people and you have everything you need for preparing the family banquet! The living room also contains a large number of books, films and music.

We loved our stay. House is down a quiet lane, with forest walks on the door step. The kitchen is very well provided and spacious, and the house is cosy with lots of personal touches, also very comfortable. Garden is lovely, lots of places to sit out, amongst the fruit trees. So we felt right at home. The owners/housekeeper in France couldn't have been nicer or more responsive to queries. Only downside is electric loos which are noisy and, with six in the house, you know when someone has made a visit to the loo - particularly at night! We got used to it but our guests didn't.

Loved the surrounding country too, fantastic empty beaches that go on forever, peaceful fields, great markets, gardens, churches, bayeux tapestry about an hour a way and lots of much more recent history: Utah Beach within half an hour's drive and a couple of stand out museums on D Day within very easy reach.

Owner's Response: So glad to hear you enjoyed your stay. Am afraid the electric loos were the only available choice at time of refurbishment because of the pipework; we've got used to them and when only used for 'tinkles' at night it's best to leave flushing until morning!!!!!!

Graham and Emma

  • 4 of 5

Very well equipped, comfortable and brilliantly situated. We enjoyed evening meals around the huge kitchen table, although only 2 of us, and cooking on the gas barbecue. Our dog appreciated the nearby woods and the beaches only a short drive away. We found several nice eateries around and had day trips to both coasts and the D Day beaches. The nearby vet was handy for the dogs inspection prior to returning home.

Would have given a 5 star rating if the downstairs Freeview had worked.

Owner's Response: Many thanks. We are very sorry that you had a problem with the Freeview but it would appear that previous guests (from Germany) had interfered with the settings on the box trying to access German television which we do not have ! After resetting the box normal service has been resumed.

Maison du Marais

  • 5 of 5

Maison du Marais is a very well appointed and comfortable cottage with plenty of room for 6 people. It gives the impression of being a private home which it is, also being the owner's holiday cottage.

It lies in a large mature garden with orchard and is well placed for nearby towns and the coast at Port Bail, where excellent beaches are within easy reach.

We were fortunate to have 2 weeks of excellent weather and were able to explore the Cotentin peninsular and see the area at its best. Good markets and restaurants are within a few kilometres and the cottage has superb kitchen and dining area for those who wish to self cater.

We enjoyed an excellent holiday and are happy to recommend Maison du Marias as the perfect base for a Normandy holiday.

Fabulous house - comfortable and well-equipped

  • 5 of 5

Maison Du Marais is a fantastic place to stay. Quiet location, lovely garden, clean, excellent attention to detail. Great base to explore the western Cotentin peninsula. The three ruined moulins just a short walk from the house at Mont Besneville are awesome at dusk, with views out to the channel islands. Great having the forest on the doorstep too. We would thoroughly recommend staying here! :)

Home away from home. Amazing!!!!

  • 5 of 5

This holiday offered peace and quiet in a beautiful home and surroundings, this has to be one of the most relaxing holidays my husband and my self have had, this was also with our beautiful 9 month old daughter. There is so much to see and the cottage is very well situated as you are only a short drive away from some beautiful beaches, walks and amazing historical destinations. Will defiantly be recommending this place to friends and family, and will be revisiting again next year.

Easter break

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely relaxing holiday at Maison du Marais. It is very well situated: A short drive to/from the Cherbourg ferry and easily accessible to beaches on both the east and west coast as well as many places of interest to explore. There are a number of good local restaurants serving excellent food, a wonderful Boulanger nearby and handy supermarkets/shops. You can also just chill at the cottage as there a several areas in the pretty garden to sit and walks from the door into the forest and Le Mont which our dogs in particular really enjoyed. Everything was clean and well maintained and the owner was very helpful, always giving a very quick response to any requests or questions we had.
