Perfect hosts, villa and views
We could not have hoped for a better place to stay. We’ve just come back from a week’s stay at El Rancho. Jacqui and Garrett are such generous, friendly hosts. They immediately offered us drinks on arrival and were on hand to instantly offer any help needed- even photographing my passport and emailing it over to us at the Alhambra Palace! (make sure you book ahead and that each person takes their passport to get in).
The accommodation is spotless and the grounds and views are stunning. Jacqui and Garret love to have a conversation on any topic, but also do not intrude if you want time to yourself. We had a gorgeous hot week without a cloud in the sky, but a cooling breeze- just perfect for us. We used the pool and the hot tub many times.
Our girls ( 14 and 10) thoroughly enjoyed helping Penny and Lily look after the horses each day. And although they’d only done horse riding as a holiday treat in England before, improved so much with a couple of private riding lessons.
The villa is ideally situated to experience the ‘real’ Spain and is a five minute drive from the village which has adequate shops for meat, fish and groceries; although we did a big shop on arrival at a fantastic supermarket which is about 30mins drive away. Our villa had a great outdoor eating area with a gas BBQ, as well as a roof top terrace with loungers and chairs.
None of us wanted to leave- a week just wasn’t long enough to enjoy everything this villa and area has to offer
Second to none location, second to none hosts!
It's always nerve-wracking choosing a place for your only holiday of the year, but this place surpassed all our exceptions. Not only was it impeccably clean and sufficiently equipped (for example each villa has it's own gas BBQ) but within 5 minutes of arriving, we felt like we were visiting old friends. Cold drinks were waiting for us and we were welcomed onto a terrace by the main pool. The location is fabulous, quiet but within 10 minutes drive of the town which has some fantastic eateries. It's not very touristy, and is slightly cooler up in the mountains. We were able to access the coast and the cities within an hour and our hosts recommended some excellent places to go - even booking us sunbeds on the beach and tables at the restaurants. Our daughter also went riding on one of the days and had the best hour of her life atop a gentle animal with expert guidance from Penny who kindly showed her the reins. To top it off, the beds were the most comfortable I have ever slept on in Spain, coupled with ceiling fans, it made for a very restful stay. Superb!
Great quiet break
Great villa is a quite area of town with facilities to make your stay comfortable.
Friendly hosts and family .
Excepional. Wonderful hosts.
A little off the beaten track, which made it praceful and relaxing. It worked out well as a base for sightseeing in Cordoba, Grenada, and then going to Ronda. The apartment was comfortable and well furnished. And Jacque and Garret made us very welcome and took care of all our needs. There is a good grocery stote in Archidona, but it is about 30 minutes drive, so stock up when you get there. Also, Jacque will love you if you bring her Jack Daniels or Jim Beam from the duty free.
Wonderful home from home in sunny Andalusia
My daughter and I spent one week at El Rancho (June 2016). The two lovely hosts made us feel so much at home. We had many long and interesting conversations around the table, with them and with their other guests. Their care of us extended to lending us several things we had forgotten to bring and indeed lending us two of their own bikes to go riding across the many walking and cycling treks in the countryside around El Rancho. My daughter did horse riding, both in the training arena and trekking into the lovely hills around. The teacher was excellent and my daughter's really learned a lot. I enjoyed both long walks and mountain biking in the nearby hills. The accommodation was super with everything needed to create an enjoyable holiday. The pools were appreciated on a hot day. My daughter particularly liked our little roof garden to watch the sunset. We flew into Malaga and El Rancho is one hour drive north of there. We also went to visit both Cordoba and Granada. El Rancho was just a wonderful place to spend time together with my daughter but would be very suitable for families from younger to older. The hosts took great care of everyone to ensure that a relaxing and enjoyable holiday was had in a very convivial atmosphere. We will be going back next year without a doubt and probably in June as the temperature was just perfect then.
Relax and enjoy!
We were travelliing with our daughter of one and had a really nice time. We are not easily pleased people, but very positive about Jacque and Garret and the rest of the family. They're very warm people that really make you feel at home. There in for a laugh or a good conversation and are aimed at making your stay very pleasant.
The "rancho" looks sweet and is taken care of very well. We stayed in "El alter real" and enjoyed a lot the seats on the roof, which give a nice view on the surroundings. For us it was nice to go round in the evening with our daughter and also pay a visit to the stables. We think of returning in some time.
Special interest holidays:
At "El Rancho" our passion in life are our horses, these are our own personal horses - our extended family. Our horses are all loved and cared for, regularly exercised and given only the best feed and supplements. Yes, they are thoroughly spoilt, however this is only reflected in their good manners and well being. All our horses have recieved BHS schooling. During the summer our horses graze naturally through the olive groves. If you would like to participate in trail riding whilst you are staying with us, we are more than happy to discuss your riding requirements. The trails, vary between tracks through the valleys amongst the olive groves to pathways through the pine clad mountains, all our routes are varied, depending on the ability of the rider, however all our routes provide breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Jacque always likes to give our younger clients a riding appraisal in our dressage arena, before venturing into the mountains for the first time.
Numerous sandy beaches and sea food restaurants of the Costa Del Sol can be reached in as little time as 40 minutes, El Palo, has many chiringito's, and the famous fish Restaurant "El Tintero" is a favourite with the Spanish locals. There are also several water parks on the Coast and Tivoli fun Park in Benalmadena. The lakeside beaches of Lake Iznajar are only 20 minutes away, and has child friendly sandy beaches. There is also a beachside chiringito (bar/restaurant) for snacks and refreshments.
Both Granada and Malaga airports are within an easy 45 minutes drive, we would recommend hiring a car, although we can arrange to collect you from either airport if required.
The "Peublo Blanco" village of Villanueva del Trabuco is 3km from El Rancho, a pleasant stroll in the Spring and Autumn, with a couple of restaurants/bars on route. Close by are the historical towns of Antequera and Archidona, Antequera was originally established during the Roman times and is steeped in interesting architecture, it is well worth a visit to see the historic bull ring, traditional restaurants and street cafes. Antequera also has some great fashion boutiques.
The traditional village of Villanueva del Trabuco, contains a variety of authentic tapas bars and restaurants, offering a wide variety of different cuisines. In the village you will find many different shops, from small supermarkets to gift shops to women's boutiques. There is also a daily indoor market selling fresh produce, fruit and veg, fresh fish and meat. Trabuco has a beautiful new central plaza with numerous bars and cafes centered around a fountain, an ideal place to take a coffee or a glass of wine and watch the locals go by. Trabuco has many fiestas through the year where you can see on first hand the "Real Spain" with the women all dressed in their traditional dresses and the men on their Andalucian horses, bands playing in the plaza and everyone having a great time. The Fiestas are a major part of life in the Andalucain countryside and everyone joins in, from the smallest baby to the oldest grandparent.
Other places of interest include the famous Alhambra Palace at Granada, an absolute must, there are also the famous historic towns of Ronda, Sevilla and Cordoba. All worthy of a visit.
At El Rancho we are also able to arrange for our guests a variety of other activities, including off road trail biking, complete with personal tour guide, scuba diving and golf. The local area is a haven for bird watchers, painters, walkers, climbers, mountain bikers and photographers. For more detailed information please visit our website.
