About Peter Baker

Peter and Janet Baker fell in love with La Palma when visiting friends there. They have thoughtfully and carefully restored an old avocado plantation owner's house which they bought in 2003.

They have used experience gained in running two holiday cottages on the coast of Northumberland in the UK to equip Villa Miranda to a high standard. Their aim was to provide modern comforts in a characterful setting.

Peter, an amateur artist, was inspired by the flowers and scenery around the house to produce a series of paintings and drawings. These hang alongside other antique and modern works of art on the walls of the house.

Why Peter Baker chose Canary Islands

Peter and Janet were instantly impressed by how La Palma was untouched by the mass tourism which seemed to have taken over some of the other Canary islands.

The island has spectacular scenery and many areas are protected from development.

Villa Miranda is in a rural location, but with easy access to the capital, the airport and the small seaside resorts on both sides of the island. You feel you are living among a local canarian population and you can share the fiestas and traditions of the area of Brena Alta. Alternatively there is the space to just retreat into the seclusion of the villa and its grounds and enjoy the pool and other amenities.

What makes this villa unique

The villa is located fairly central to the island. It forms a perfect base for visiting the national park in the centre of the island, the volcanoes in the south west, the east and west coasts and the rocky regions of the north. The capital, Santa Cruz, and the airport are only twenty minutes away by car.

Most other villas for rent on the island are fairly small and basic and do not have a private pool. Peter and Janet set out to provide a level of comfort and luxury in a spacious and traditional setting at a reasonable price.

They also deliberately set out to offer a fixed rental price all year round, so that visitors were not doubly penalised by increased villa and flight prices at peak times of the year.

Wonderful destination for a quiet, relaxing break

Villa Miranda certainly lived up to all our expectations. It is a very spacious property set in a large plot with a variety of outside areas for barbecuing or relaxing. The pool area is similarly very spacious and well equipped. The views are stunning. There is a small but well stocked supermarket a short walk away so easy to purchase fresh bread each morning. There are books and DVDs galore so if you don't plan on being too active there is plenty to pass the time. La Palma is an interesting island; the roads are generally narrow, steep and windy so a good hill start technique is essential when driving the car you must hire to make the most of your stay. A drive to Roque Las Muchachos is a must, 7500 feet above sea level offering stunning views even on a cloudy day. There is also an excellent island wide system to guide hikers along the various tracks. There are several good restaurants a short drive away for those times you don't want to cook. All in all I would highly recommend the villa as a place to stay and La Palma as a destination for a quiet and relaxing break.

Home from home

This house is a delight to stay in. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you can want. The rooms are all comfortable, spacious and beautifully cleaned. There is a comfortable sunroom giving views over the delightful garden and right down to the sea. This side of the island can be cooler than the west but our pool was heated, fun to use and there are even toys provided. Should you need it the central heating works quickly and efficiently. We didn’t try out the log burning stove.

One of the toilets stopped working but the housekeeper came immediately, a workman was sent for and within 24 hours it was sorted. (There were 2 other toilets we could still use!) We couldn’t connect to the Internet but the owner and housekeeper are trying desperately to get it working.

This is a real home from home. There are a vast number of books of all genres and over 100 videos should you want them. The stairs to the downstairs bedrooms can be tricky to negotiate but there is a stair gate and there are bedrooms upstairs as well.

We loved staying here my husband walked the Volcano Route, we saw Volcanoes and forest, learnt about making silk and producing wine and relaxed by the sea. It is a lot hotter on the other side of the island but it is easily reached from this house if you have a car, indeed all areas are as you are about in the middle of the island. It also wasn’t a long drive from the airport when we arrived for which I was thankful, but we never heard any plane noise

I must also say a big thank you for the welcome basket which was awaiting our arrival and was greatly appreciated. I had never seen tinned butter before and the tomatoes were huge!

The pace of life in paradise can be quite slow! Being central to the island you can get to most parts of it in less than an hour and benefit from the spectacular views and flora and fauna surrounding our villa. Come and enjoy the experience!

Thoroughly recommended

This is one of the best properties that we have rented . It had everything that we (2 couples) wanted, amazing views, a beautiful garden, a pool, a lovely house that was equipped with just about everything. It felt more like a home than a holiday rental, but no, I hasten to add with loads of clutter. The agent met us at the airport and we followed in our hire car, we were very grateful for this and we avoided the circular routes ending back where you started from!

The owner was more than helpful in our correspondence and we got exactly what was descibed. The photos of the propery do it justice but cannot account for the wonderful character and comfort of Villa Miranda.

The villa is well sited for the local village and the capital, with excellent restaurants, is about 20 minutes drive. La Palma is a beautiful island, quiet, with excellent walks, amazing scenery and friendly people. What more can you want!

traumhaft schöner Urlaub

Wir waren zwei Wochen in der Villa und haben den Urlaub in vollen Zügen genossen. Die Villa ist wunderschön und es hat uns an nichts gefehlt. Zum Schwimmen in dem tollen Pool war es leider ein bisschen kühl aber wir haben die herrliche Landschaft auf La Palma erkundet - einfach zauberhaft. An Peter und seine Familie nochmals herzliche Grüsse und vielen Dank für den schönen Urlaub.

The villa is 15 minutes drive from the beach resort of Los Cancajos. This resort has a number of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops but remains pleasantly small scale. The beach is black sand, as are all beaches on the island, and rocky outcrops make it safe for swimming.


La Palma's small airport is a 20 mins drive away as is the harbour of Santa Cruz which has a ferry connection to Tenerife. There are currently direct flights once per week to the island from Gatwick and Manchester. Contact owner for further information. Car hire is essential if you wish to discover the range and beauty of the island.


The nearest small town is San Pedro, 5 mins by car, which has supermarkets, bars and shops. Santa Cruz, the capital, is 20 mins drive away. A 45 mins drive through mountain scenery and tunnels will take you to the other side of the island with Los Llanos, the 'second capital' and the beach resorts of Puerto Naos and Tazacorte. It is less than an hour's drive from the house to most parts of the island with its striking contrasts of coast and mountain scenery.

Further Details:

Horseriding, diving, mountain biking and walking tours can be arranged in the local area. Though set in a rural area, restaurants, shops, bars and supermarkets are only a short drive away from the house.
