The Cottage has a traditional stone exterior and contemporary interior. The master bedroom is on a mezzanine overlooking the open plan living area. Oak beams, with modern lighting and original artwork sit comfortably with Danish BoConcept furniture and beds. The master bed is super king sized with a full Tempur mattress. The 2nd bedroom, downstairs, has twin beds also with Tempur mattresses. There is 1 wet room with modern walk-in shower. This has a rain shower head as well as a traditional shower. The fittings are modern and unusual and the water for the flat basin comes from the mirror! The imported German kitchen is top quality, with Gaggenau ceramic halogen hob, an oven, microwave, fridge, dishwasher and washing machine. Black granite work surfaces, simple white crockery, plenty of glasses for wine, champagne and cognac! Walk out of double doors onto a decking appointed with stylish Royal Botania table and chairs. There is a Mac computer for DVD's and music with Bose speakers

Originally built in 1836, Bois Blanc was a Cognac producer's house and is set, away from busy roads, in the Grand Champagne region of the Cognac vineyards. It is now owned by an English couple who are renovating the main house. There are no immediate neighbours. The Cottage is set in its own raised gardens, and the landscaping is being carefully arranged to provide privacy between the Cottage and the Barn. Neither is overlooked by the owners who live in the main house. The large 12 x 6m L shaped pool has ample space to practice lengths while the deep stepped area allows you to sit and dip your feet in the water while reading a book ... without being splashed! About Badger Davis
We are Badger and Mandie Davis both in our 50's with 2 teenage daughters. We have owned Bois Blanc for 15 years building it up from derelict. Badger is an ex Army Major, running a small design agency (specialising in interior design) in France and UK. Mandie runs her own French language educational business in the UK. We have a house in Tunbridge Wells, where our daughters go to school, and we live between UK and France. We both took 7 years out of the rat race to get Bois Blanc up and running and found it an inspiring and liberating experience which changed us for good! We have invested a lot in Bois Blanc as we believe that holidays are the most important weeks of the year for you. Everything must be high quality and special, and that's what we have aimed to create at Bois Blanc.

The 3 L's (location) of house buying guided us to Bois Blanc, as it is literally in the middle of the vineyards of the 'Grand Champagne' Cru of cognac (the most prestigious cru). At the end of its own track with no neighbours, Bois Blanc is a peaceful and beautiful setting. It is also within 45 minutes of the magical South-West Coast, were we spend lots of our time. Summers here are always good and one can use the pool from May until the end of September. We love the Charente region as it's largely undeveloped and unspoiled. Time has stood still here and you really can relax from the moment you step out of the car and breath the fresh air. There is lots to see and do; the famous islands of Ré and Oleron are easily accessible, as are Bordeaux (for civilisation) and St Emilion (for wine). Finally the cognac here in the Grand Champagne is the best in the world!

Bois Blanc was a literal ruin, but this gave us scope to renovate the traditional stone exteriors and then add completely modern interiors. Thus we have all the beauty of an old house with all modern conveniences. Being designers, we have made the interiors of the Cottage and the Barn interesting, harmonious and inspiring. We used expensive materials and fittings to make Bois Blanc the best in the region and fitting of your holiday expectations. These are individually tailored holiday apartments not Gites! The Gardens and pool have had the same treatment to give Bois Blanc the luxury of a hotel, without the impersonality and the exclusivity of a villa, without the isolation. Our own house...........it's not even half finished yet, as for us, it's always guests first!

A fabulous holiday stay
In July this year,we spent a very restful week at Bois Blanc. The website and photos are a true reflection of this very beautiful holiday home. The Design Cottage was immaculately clean with everything you require and more from a holiday rental.
Badger was incredibly helpful with advice on places to see and visit. He has mastered the art of being available whilst being unobtrusive.
We will definitely be booking again.

Bois Blanc - A Perfect Place to Stay in France!
This was our second stay at Bois Blanc and we love it there. We've stayed in Design Cottage and Modern Barn and they are both exceptional properties, beautifully designed and well thought through. The pool is lovely and well maintained with comfortable pool furniture around it. The properties are set amongst vineyards in the French countryside and it's beautiful as well as peaceful. We stayed a second time as there is so much to see and do we couldn't manage it in one visit. The owners, Badger and Mandie are amazing hosts and nothing is too much trouble. There are ingredients for a meal and drinks when you arrive, helpful additions such as dishwasher tablets, toilet rolls, fruit and veg generously offered from their kitchen garden and fresh bread delivered by Badger. They can also give lots of advice and tips on places to visit (saved us making a wasted journey on a French bank holiday) if you want. All in all a wonderful place to stay in beautiful rural France and we will be back as we will struggle to find anywhere else that compares to Bois Blanc!
This is a beautiful property in rural Southwest France. It is surrounded by gorgeous French countryside and the vineyard runs literally to the wall of the cottage. Badger made us feel very welcome. Pool is excellent for relaxing in. If you're looking for a holiday which is quiet and gives you the chance to get away from it all this is the place to go.

We have had a wonderful week despite the weather being wetter than the norm for the season. The accommodation is beautiful, comfortable and peaceful. The attention to detail makes the experience.

A high quality property in an attractive region
Executive summary for Design Cottage: this is a very good quality property. It is located in an interesting region. Book without hesitation. Highly recommended.
We are no strangers to renting French holiday homes, so it takes quite something to impress us. Badger's cottage did.
From the minute you arrive, it is obvious that it has been prepared by someone who wants the property and the experience to be 'just right.' It is. The cottage is a tastefully done. It contains everything you need and nothing you don't. Those who rent often know exactly what I am saying here.
Conveniently, there is a small Carrefour about 6km away. A good road system allows easy access to many places.
We were not familiar with the Charente area prior to this trip. It has many enjoyable short and long trips to keep you fully occupied. When you do not wish to be occupied, the pool area is the nicest we have had.
We wondered how a different region would compare with Dordogne, Lot and Garonne visits. I can assure you it compares very favourably. We absolutely loved our trip to the Ile-de-Re. Talmont is a pretty village. The Charentaise style has a lot to recommend it.
Badger has perfected the home owner art of being there when required and subtly absent when not. He is an interesting and lovely chap.
We thank you for quality beds and bedding; comfy pool furniture and a great pool area; a very clean house (I am super fussy about cleanliness); tasty courgettes and green beans fresh from the garden; delicious fresh bread in the morning; all of the useful tips about where to visit; making our holiday peaceful and memorable; and taking the time to give of yourself.

If you have an interest in cognac, we can arrange visits to some of the smaller producers as well as the larger cognac houses. If you are visiting over the November to January period, there would be the opportunity to see the distillation process carried out on traditional stills. Please email us if you want us to arrange this for you or to put together a cognac lover's package including lots of visits and tastings.
About 50 mins drive from the coast. You can explore the Gironde estuary, the beaches around Royan, La Palmyre and the Cote Sauvage. The Ile de Ré and the Ile d'Oleron are close enough to make a day trip. All the beaches are sandy and it's easy to find secluded spots.
Nearest airports - La Rochelle (1 and a half hour's drive), Angouleme, (1 hour), Bordeaux, (1 hour 10 mins), Poitiers (2 hours). Due to the isolated location a car is quite important, but not essential if you just want to chill out here and not go anywhere. We can arrange pick up from a station or airport (at an additional cost).
Nearest village is 3km with small shop, post office, bar, cafe (it's all in one!). Cognac is the nearest town, about 15km away with restaurants, cafes, bars and shopping . St Emilion 80km, Bordeaux 90km, Angouleme 45km, La Rochelle 65km, Ile d'Re 70km.
Plenty of historic towns to visit within an hour: Cognac, Saintes, Angouleme, Royan, La Rochelle, St Emilion and Bordeaux. Fantastic scenery, stone villages and a sea of cognac vines. Outdoor activities include: canoeing, cycling, walking, swimming. There are miles of off-road tracks through the vines which are great for walking, cycling or riding. The Atlantic coast and the famous islands of Oleron and Ré. Quaint costal villages, huge stretches of sandy, dune backed beaches. Oysters, Seafood, wine, cognac and pineau. Lots of independent Cognac estates to visit. International Blues Passions event (awesome!) in Cognac (2011 Moby, Morcheeba, ZZ Top - 2012 The Cranberries, Sting, Hugh Laurie). Street theatre festival in September. Fete d'Cognac outdoor music and food festival (fantastic). Contact us if you want to know if anything is going on when you visit.
Changeover Day: Changeover day is Saturday. 4pm arrival, 10am departure. Notes on prices: The prices are for one week, regardless of how many people are staying. We do not charge extra for towels and linen. Pool towels are provided. Your welcome pack includes your first nights 3 course meal, with wine and cognac and your breakfast for the following morning. Out of season short breaks are priced on a percentage rate: 1, 2 or 3 nights 65%, 4 nights 75%, 5, 6 or 7 nights 100% of weekly rental price.
