Villa in Hamalevri, Nr. Rethymnon, Crete, Greece - Peaceful Village, less than 10 Minutes to beach and Amenities

Villa Moira (Greek for 'destiny') is a beautiful, new bungalow situated on the edge of the peaceful, typically Cretan village of Hamalevri, just 12 km from the bustling town of Rethymno in the north west of Crete. Only five minutes drive from local beaches, with their hotels and beach-side tavernas (stroll a bit further down the beach for an even quieter experience), and the villages of Stavremenos and Sfakaki with their selection of supermarkets, tavernas, grill bars, a butcher and a pharmacy. There’s even a pizza take-away at Dimitri’s. The villa is well appointed and has air conditioning the main bedroom as well as the living area, with TV* and DVD, along with a stereo (with MP3 connection). Its valley position means you will enjoy a gentle breeze to take the edge off the heat of the day whilst relaxing on the sun terrace watching the family of resident eagles soaring overhead.

*note the TV is local channels only, but is a modern 32" flat screen with a variety of connections including USB and HDMI, so you're welcome to take your own device with you and attach it,

About Richard

We live in Northamptonshire with our two dogs. We both love the Greek islands - their food, climate, huge variety of landscapes, things to do and of course the people. We chose Crete to buy before we'd ever visited, and haven't regreted the decision.

Richard purchased this bungalow in 2007

Why Richard chose Rethymno

All five of the new houses on this development and three neighbouring villas are owned by British couples. However, this doesn't make it a 'little Britain' - far from it. The eight properties only three are lived in full time, and all of us have embraced the Cretan way of life.

The village is set a little way away from the coast - about five minutes in the car - and even further from the normal tourist areas. This makes for a peaceful base for you to enjoy the quiet of the countryside and the locals.

Although the house isn't big (65 m2), it's very comfortable and perched on the side of a hill with stunning views up and down the valley. The huge terrace catches the sun from early morning right up until sunset, and we've incorparated plenty of shade to escape to as well.

What makes this bungalow unique

Friendly but not over-familiar locals, both Greek and British; the stunning view, the peace and quiet. It's very well located for excellent beaches, history and culture, cycling and walking, great places to eat out. Or just spend your days relaxing on the terrace.

We had a great stay in your Villa. The past 2 weeks went by so quickly it's hard to believe it actually happened. The Villa is very comfortable and well equipped - it's kind of home from home and we settled in quickly. The views are the best and every day the got better, you really could never become tired of them - I think that you have the best position/view from Villa Moira and it was so relaxing there, very quiet and a real contrast to our lives here in Kings Cross. We could not believe how soon we managed to slow down. We actually preferred to spend a lot of our time in the villa which was unusual for as we love Crete so much.

The photos that you have don't do it any justice as being there in reality was much better. We could not find a better place.

Notes on accommodation: Property is available all year round, and has heating for those fresh winter evenings. It's an ideal base for exploring Crete, being fairly centrally located on the island, about midway between the airports of Heraklion and Chania (about an hour's drive from each). There is a small local Cafenion in the village (coffee shop/bar) where you will be welcomed by the locals and encouraged to practice your Greek! A couple of hundred metres up the road in Asteri there are two small convenience shops and a friendly taverna. There is parking for 2 cars on the property, and many more just up the road. Our local (English) agent is on hand to help with any queries or problems Outside: Outside there are sun beds, parasols and a table and chairs. The grounds are largely hard landscaped, with a pergola to offer some shade. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bath and hand towels, and bedlinen are provided - 2 sets per person. Cleaning/linen changing can be arranged, payable locally, however, we find guests usually prefer to be left in peace.

Lovely House, great location

My wife and I stayed in October. The house has very good facilities, well looked after and clean. The terrace patio is lovely for sitting out in the evening watching the sun set opposite. The local supermarkets(s) in Stavromenos have a good range and the baker and butcher are excellent. Loved the butchers pork and home made sausages which were perfect for the house barbecue.

Do go to the Cretan music evening at the Poliou house on Thursday night in Asteri (the next village). Only 10 minutes walk so you can enjoy the local wine! You may want practise drinking brandy from a glass held in your teeth while doing a press up :-)

We were travelling round the island looking at historical sites as well as a few beach visits. The house was well positioned for this with Knossos, Chania and South coast all being about an hour's drive along some very interesting roads

Finally, thanks to Richard the owner for his help and flexibility - a pleasure to deal with him.

Would definitley go again or recommend

Peace and Tranquility

So much more than expected. spacious, spotlessly clean, good quality furnishings, comfortable. obviously a well loved holiday home. The best thing for me was the absolute peace and tranquillity, the views really are stunning across the valley towards the sea, a fantastic place to totally unwind and relax away from any stresses and have come home totally rejuvenated. My other half who likes to be more active wasn't disappointed either and had some good scuba dives locally, some early morning runs on the beach and had a day riding around the island on a horse galloping across the beach and the stunning countryside. (and was happy to come back and fire up the bbq) local food is fresh and delicious and no need to go out as this is not just a base to holiday from, but staying here in this beautiful apartment with stunning views, for me is the holiday itself. Will definitely be returning.

Superb Villa with stunning views

Everything you could want from a villa. Ideally located for trips into town or a stroll through the hills. For any keen divers, Evelin Divers are only a 10 minute drive away in Rethymno. Moira Villa was very clean and comfortable and i made use of the outside shower as the weather was stunning and needed to cool off. The views from the patio are absolutely breathtaking. I will definitely be returning to Villa Moira.

Great Villa

Villa Moira is a comfortable, well equipped property in a quiet village. Although it gives the impression of being remote it is very close to all amenities such as shops, restaurants etc. and the beach is only a few minutes drive away. However a car is a must if staying at this property. The villa is well maintained and the furniture and fittings are of a good standard. Sitting on the one of the terraces with a glass of wine looking at the amazing views was a lovely way to end our day. The only fault we had was the noise from barking dogs both nearby and across the valley but this is a common problem in the countryside and in no way reflects on the quality of the villa or the owners. There is so much to see in Crete and the villa is well placed for visiting the different tourist sites and a delight to come back to away from the busy resorts. The local beaches are excellent and there are numerous restaurants and bars close by. The Cretan Evening in the next village only 5 minutes walk away is a must. This was our first visit to Crete and we were so lucky to have spent it at Villa Moira and would have no hesitation in making a return visit.

Crete 2014

Lovely villa which is well placed for getting out and about (which we did). You do need a car and we highly recommend Athens Car Rental. Good prices and good service, actually on the airport so dead easy to get out and return at the end of the holiday.

Loads of places to see, scenery is stunning. It was our first time in Crete and we loved the place and the villa. Lots of places to eat in the villages which are close by and the resorts which are about 10k away.

Overall a great service and we would recommend a visit to the villa.

Great Find

Our first, and hopefully not last, visit to Crete. This villa was just great, private and ideally located in a residential area. Very clean and all you need for some self catering meals if that's your fancy. Swing and loungers on the patio area looking out down the valley to a sea view. Air con available but we did'nt need it in early May, although the weather was pretty good. A must visit is the Poliou House in the next village of Asteri, 10 minutes walk away, it's a Traditional House Museum and Taverna. Guided tour of the rooms and plenty of Cretan history thrown in! The meals were very traditional with recommendations from the owners son. Well priced with their own house wine and to end the meal their own "Poliou Nectar". We also visited an olive factory at Melidoni owned by the Paraschakis family. The DVD's provided a couple of evenings entertainment when we decided to eat in. Overall a really good holiday in a great villa! We would definitely recommend it!

Five minute drive to local beaches and tavernas, bars and supermarkets. Venture slightly further afield for more cosmopolitan areas, or a twenty minute drive to Rethymno. A very quiet, 12 km long beach is a short drive away.


Hamalevri is about midway between the airports of Heraklion and Chania, being about an hour's drive from each. Although taxis are available, car hire is suggested. We can recommend excellent and good value car hire. The property is very easy to find and clear directions will be provided by us.

Note: EasyJet now fly to Crete from Gatwick, Manchester or Luton, and Jet2 from some airports in the north and Midlands.
