In the heart of old Kalkan this charming British owned house - one of the oldest in the village - is just minutes away from the local shops and restaurants and a minute from Kalkan beach.The traditional whitewashed walls are offset with climbing bourgainvillea, wooden balconies and shutters. The delightful roof terrace looks out to sea, and the little islands in the bay, and the back rooms onto a small square shaded by mulberry trees. This characterful house is simply but tastefully decorated and has been completely refurbished this year, with new and well equipped modern bathrooms and kitchen, without compromising the original features. Kalkan is situated east of Dalaman airport between the towns of Fethiye and Kas, and is one of Turkeys more sophisticated resorts. Built around an ancient Greek/Turkish harbour on the beautiful turquoise coast, this small town has developed to provide everything needed by the modern tourist without losing its charm

About Jash Laing

I live with my partner in a farmhouse in Northern Scotland. My 4 chidren are now grown up and all over the world but we regularly meet up in Kalkan which they have known since their childhoods, for family holidays. I am an artist and also have a small catering company. I have always loved travelling and lived in Nepal for 5 years when the children were small. We love entertaining and eating good food and drinking wine, and have had many a convivial evening in Kalkan doing just that!

Why Jash Laing chose Kaş

Having had the next door house (TK664) since 1999, we knew the area well, and had always loved being in the old village, which now that Kalkan has grown so much bigger, feels like an oasis. Yet it is so central being so close to the beach, the harbour and lots of restaurants and bars. Also the charm and hospitality of the people has not changed since we first came, which makes Kalkan such a pleasure to return to.

What makes this apartment unique

It is wonderful to be in the heart of the pretty old village yet in such a peaceful location. One can walk down to the beach for a swim before breakfast and after a hot day out at sea or on the beach it is a very short journey home, unlike most of the villas which are much higher up in the town. One does not need a car except for exploring the surrounding area. We love the fact that the house is old and full of character, and have been very aware of this while refurbishing it, but the newly put in bathrooms and kitchen gives it a modern touch. And of course its own stunning roof terrace, which has been universally popular with family and guests alike, is a great draw.

Notes on accommodation: The house is one of the oldest in Kalkan and we have completely refurbished it this year, but have kept as many as the old features as possible , for instance the wooden floor upstairs, and the beams, but without compromising comfort. the other rooms have tiled floors and killim rugs. The thick walls keep it much cooler than most modern built houses. The bathrooms are completely new this year, as is the kitchen, which is fully equipped and leads out onto a wide breakfast balcony overlooking the pretty tree shaded square below. The 1st floor double bedroom has its own balcony from which the sea can be seen. The ground floor double room opens out onto the square, and table and chairs can be provided for sitting out there. There is air conditioning in both double bedrooms and mosquito nets for both double beds. The accommodation would suit a family well. Outside: There is a spacious roof terrace, overlooking the sea one side, and mountains the other, as well as some of the pretty Kalkan roof tops, with cushions and 2 sun loungers. An umbrella, portable barbeque, and table and chairs for eating at are also up there. The 1st floor bedroom has a long balcony with a sea view, and the kitchen a large enough balcony for breakfast, with an outside staircase leading down to the pretty tree shaded square. The ground floor double bedroom also opens out on to the square, and is another area to use for a quiet drink or meal or to relax in with a book out of the sun. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen included. Weekly linen change but can be more frequent for extra price on request. Other: There is a "chill-out" room with a large sofa covered in cushions, a fridge and storage area, a table for eating in bad weather, leading out to the large roof terrace.

Great Location!

I would describe this property as a house (albeit quirky) rather than an is set over three floors with one bedroom + lounge on the ground floor, a second bedroom + kitchen on the next and a chillout room + a sea facing roof terrace on the third. There is plenty of sitting out space and it is nicely located on a small leafy square in the old town.

We had a really relaxing stay and the house is comfortably furnished with a modern kitchen but no wifi or radio so we would take our own next time. It is within spitting distance of restaurants and shops and very quiet compared to other areas in Kalkan. The local keyholder was very helpful even though we didn't arrive until nearly midnight but we did have a problem ringing him and had to rely on Whatsapp courtesy of our daughter as we would never have coped with something so technically advanced!

The ground floor bedroom is more private with its own entrance via the adjoining lounge and we would opt for that next time as the first floor bedroom is an access route for the other one so unless your body clocks are synchronised you could be awake earlier than you intended. However this can easily be overcome by the ground floor bedroom using the 2nd entrance through the 1st floor exterior door to the kitchen - need to remember this next time.

All in all it was a perfect place to recharge our batteries and hopefully we will be back.

A fabulous old house with all modern amenities in the centre of the village

We have just returned from our holiday to Kalkan and our stay at this beautiful old house! What can we say?...we were delighted with the property, the description and pictures gave us an indication of the style and what to expect and I must say we were not disappointed!

The layout suited our family perfectly and the location of the house was far better than expected being so close to the town beach and restaurants for the evening...that said, you would not have thought you were so close to all the amenities as it was so quiet!

The house was spotlessly clean, with recently refurbished bathrooms and kitchen, which was fully equipped, for the odd occasion that we ate in.

Halis was very friendly and arranged the airport transfers for us and was also keen to make sure that everything was ok during our stay.

All in all, we would hope to return again in the future and would definitely recommend a stay at this house, a real gem!

1 min walk from Kalkan beach (pebbly, clean and well kept) and harbour from where daily boat trips go.

10 mins drive to Kaputas Beach, a small golden sandy cove.

20 mins drive to the famous Patara Beach, its 18km of white sand backing onto dunes and fascinating Roman and Greek ruins.


Dalaman, 1 1/2 hours drive.

Antalya, 2 1/2 hours drive.

Transfers can be arranged, and also car hire though this is not essential.


Ruins at Xanthos, Myra, Letoon are within 1 hour's drive. Patara, 15 mins drive. The delightful harbour town of Fethiye, 45 mins drive. Many Lycian tombs and other ruins close by. The gorge at saklikent is about an hour.

Further Details:

A local grocer shop, 'Figo' is 1 mins walk from the house, an ATM less than 5 mins and banks, supermarkets, post office and taxi/bus station all within 5 - 10 mins. There are lots of small shops close by selling carpets, leather goods and spices, pottery, gold and silver, antiques and Turkish knick-knacks.

A multitude of excellent bars and restaurants are within 1-10 mins walk and the very friendly and helpful locals are always happy to help with directions and advice. Daily boat trips on the pretty gulets are a must, with swimming and snorkelling trips off beautiful islands and rocky coastline. A wonderful on board lunch is included in the price. There are beach clubs and water sport facililities around the bay. There is a weekly market selling all sorts of goods -clothes, fabrics, jewellery, household , food and much more. Nature lovers will find many walks, including the famous Lycian Way, in the vicinity. Farming surrounds the area, and a meal in one of the local trout restaurants set high in the mountains should not be missed For the teenagers there is a vibrant bar scene with a few small oudside discos.
