About James Shenton

Married with 3 children children living in Kent. We have been running Kingfisher Cottage a highly successful holiday home business since buying it in May 2007. During this time the cottage has been extensively refurbished and we also enjoy our holidays at Kingfisher Cottage.

James Shenton purchased this barn in 2007

Why James Shenton chose South Hams

We bought Kingfisher Cottage after visiting the South Hams area many times as we realised that it was the ideal place to have a holiday home with excellent beaches, pubs and estuary towns (Kingsbridge, Dartmouth, Salcombe) combined with a host of activities and sports for all ages. The area also offers a fine range of local produce to cook in or sample in the local pubs. We specifically bought Kingfisher Cottage as it is a spacious character barn conversion which is located in a beautiful location next to a spring fed duck pond. The cottage is close to all the attractions and award winning beaches, but is in a peaceful location and has plenty of parking.

What makes this barn unique

Kingfisher Cottage is a spacious barn Conversion which is set in a Area of Natural Beauty and is ideally situated in the South Hams centrally between Dartmouth and Salcombe and close to Kingsbridge. The cottage offers luxury accommodation and benefits from Free WI-FI / Broadband, incoming phone line, 32 Inch Sony LCD TV, Blue Ray Player with DVD Library, iPod / iPhone HIFI. Kingfisher Cottage also has its own great tasting filtered spring water supply so no need for bottled water. The rental prices also include linen, towels, electricity, heating.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Lovely, homely and so well equipped. We have stayed in good accomodation before but this was excellent. All the bedrooms were very spacious, extremely comfortable and well furnished. We have 2 daughters, 4 years and 12 weeks old, and would recommend the barn to any other family. We had a great time exploring the South Hams area from this perfect location.

Brilliant holiday home in the South Hams. Very large accomodation, plenty big enough for 7 + cot. Very clean and high standard of fittings. Really good location for exploring this lovely part of Devon. Highly Recommended.

Fantastic cottage in an area of oustanding beauty - secluded yet close to some of the best beaches in Devon with only short drives to Kingsbridge, Dartmouth and Salcombe - in short an excellent base for foraying into South Hams. The cottage itself is very comfortable, ample space for a family of up to seven with all the mod-cons one could wish for (even wi-fi! so bring your laptop...).

Beautiful cottage in a great location

  • 4 of 5

We had a fantastic week. The owner was incredibly helpful and accommodating. The cottage is lovely, 3 good size bedrooms and plenty of living space with a well stocked log fire. It is also superbly equipped, a real home from home. The setting is beautiful though quite rural, the single track lanes take some getting used to but the views and tranquillity are worth it. Would highly recommend for all ages and being dog friendly js a big bonus too.

A wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

We booked Kingfisher cottage as a surprise family holiday to celebrate my mums 60th birthday, we travelled with 5 adults, one child (age 3) and two doggies. The booking process was very easy and James always replied promptly to all correspondence.

When driving to the property we did start to worry we had chosen the wrong place, to get to the cottage you have to drive down the most narrow lanes that I can only compare to rabbit warrens! quite nerve wracking to start with, especially when something comes the other way!! but how wrong could we be....once we found the cottage we were blown away with how lovely it is. And by the end of the week the lanes only added to the charm!

The cottage itself is warm, homely and so very well equipped. There is ample space for more than 5 adults and so we never felt like we were on top of each other. Every part of the cottage was exceptionally clean (and I'm very fussy) I don't think I've ever stayed anywhere so beautifully clean. Anything we needed we found - the children's toys/dvd's/books/games were a lovely touch! my daughter loved playing with her "holiday toys!"

The gated garden is perfect to keep doggies and children safe, we also enjoyed walking over to the duck pond. The children who live next door were wonderfully polite and very sweet . We made use of the bbq and the log burner (a very mixed week of weather!!) and it really did feel like a home from home.

The location of the cottage is VERY remote and there is nothing in walking distance (I may be wrong here but we didn't find anywhere) so this does mean you need to drive for each outing but this didn't bother us. There were plenty of shops within easy driving reach.

We visited Kingsbridge and ate at the Crabshell which I would highly recommend. We went to North/South sands beaches which were absolutely stunning and dog friendly. We ate at the Winking Prawn which again would highly recommend. We had a day out in Salcombe which we all really enjoyed, a visit to the old sweet shop and the Ferry Inn are a must!! on our final day we went into Dartmouth which was a beautiful place with plenty of shops and cafe's to choose from. Some of our party went on a boat trip to Agatha Christie's home and some just on a general river cruise but we all had a fantastic day and would recommend either trips.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property to anyone, it really is an exceptional holiday letting.

Beautiful Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Excellent cottage in a wonderful location, truly the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere but only a short drive from many of the excellent beaches, towns and restaurants in the South Hams. The property was great, very spacious, clean, well appointed and excellent kitchen and living area. Would recommend eating at both the Tower Inn and Crabshell Inn, and visiting Blackpool Sands, Slapton and Beesands. We also had nurmerous trips into Kingsbridge aswell as Salcombe, and up to Becky Falls in Dartmoor. All in all, a fantastic cottage and a fantastic holiday, certainly will come back!

Lovely comfy cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was our second holiday at this cottage and we just love it. It is extremely comfortable, clean and has everything you need. They even cater for children with games, books and dvd,s. My daughter and her family joined us this year and they loved it. The lanes are a little narrow, but you soon get used to them and the cottage is very central for lots of lovely places. We are already contemplating booking again for next year.

Kingfisher cottage - beautiful, with lovely garden and a great base for touring South Hams

  • 5 of 5

5 adults + grandchild + dog stayed for a week late July 2016. A great cottage, spacious accommodation, and the Prosecco waiting for us upon arrival was most welcome - thank you. Kitchen very well equipped (Miele and Bosch white goods - quality theme), roomy dining room and lounge. Bedrooms good size and with comfortable beds and pillows. New BBQ outside which came in very useful. Neighbours very friendly and gave us helpful local information. Couple of minor points that the owner is aware of, but not worth a mention here.

Would recommend Kingfisher cottage to any family wishing a great stay in a beautiful part of Devon

Beautiful cottage in pretty surroundings

  • 5 of 5

Kingfisher Cottage is a lovely place to spend a relaxing holiday. It is beautifully maintained, clean and comfortable, with an amazing kitchen. The only thing I would say is that the smallest bedroom (that is not shown on the blurb) is really only suitable for children, having no wardrobe and only a bedside table my daughter and her fiancé found it a little cramped and I really feel that should be made clear on the description. It also only has a skylight and no window so can get a bit stuffy on a hot evening even with the skylight open.
