About Clare Muller

We live in London and the opportunity to get away and enjoy some sunshine and fresh air is so wonderful. I still think the best thing I ever did was buy this house. It gives me and my family enormous pleasure and I feel so energized and refreshed after a few days spent sitting on the terrace with a drink listening to the bird song...

Clare Muller purchased this house in 1998

Why Clare Muller chose Axarquia (Costa del Sol)

I love the mountains for a walk/drive in the morning and walking to the square in Torrox village for a tasty tapas lunch in bar paco , home for a siesta and some pool action , then getting to the beach for sunset and a swim followed by a glass of tinto and some delicious fried fish in the local "chiringuito" beach bar! Only 40 mins from Malaga airport so I can have breakfast on the plane and lunch on my terrace...bliss

What makes this house unique

What I love about this house is it is so dirt tracks to deal with, private parking space and a short walk into the village. Still feels private and secluded without being remote. Picking fruit off the trees for breakfast...cooling swim after walking up hill from village ... Car boot sale on Sunday morning ... Exercising on terrace and chips and salad for 5€....Rioja , Albariño and cava for under 3€ A bottle....strolling on the BALCON de nerja with an ice cream....

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Clare,

Today we had to leave your casa clara, hopefully in a way that allows us to return some day soon!

You have an absolutely magical house. It is the first place we have rented where we really felt that we stepped into a place that someone really cared for. We loved the different coffee cups, the "share everything, just replace if it runs out" the colored lamps outside and all the other personal touches you have put in the house.

The kids loved the pool! And I loved the view from the terrace from morning to night.

Please know that we loved every minute we spent in casa clara! It lived up to all our expectations and I really hope we can return again soon. Do you by any chance rent out the bottom apartment? We were telling friends about it and it would be lovely if two families could stay there together.

A beautiful villa with amazing outdoor space.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Casa Clara at the end of July. It was perfect! The house has everything you need. It is so comfortable and tastefully decorated. The terrace was gorgeous, really big with great seating. It was ideal for watching the sun set every evening with a glass of wine. The pool was really well used by us all. The children particularly liked it and it was great for cooling off after a day in the sun. The owner Clare was really helpful too. We definitely plan to return next year.

Good outside, Shabby inside plus wild cats.

  • 2 of 5

Beware of the cats! This property comes with resident cats which are being fed and watered by the owner/house-keeper and you will be expected to feed them too! So if you dont like cats don't book it! After booking and paying we were informed by email about the cats which is a bit late really. It was impied that there was one stray cat lurking but actually there were several and there were pictures of them as kittens on the mantlepiece!

The outside gardens, terraces and pool are very pleasant. However the inside is very tired, old and shabby. The lounge furniture is a collection of old junk all covered with various throws and covers and there's not anywhere to sit comfortably. The kitchen is very basic but everything works and there are plenty of pot, pans and cooking implements.

Beds are OK but again the dressers and furniture are all old junk and most of the mirrors have de-silvered and blackened.

Overall we felt it was over-priced compared with other villas we have rented in the region. Not very clean either. There was dust on surfaces and cobwebs on the shelves in lounge. Bath emamel is chipped in several places.

This is more like an owners home share house than a luxury rental villa.

Owner's Response: In response: wild cats roam freely in the countryside and some guests love them and are happy to feed them, which of course encourages them to hang around. We would never ask or expect anyone to feed them and there are hoses to chase them away. Going forward, we will always advise potential guests about this before payment. This property is not marketed or priced as a ‘luxury villa’. It is presented as a comfortable, family home that we love, and do appreciate that it may not be to everyone’s taste – it is not IKEA. It doesn’t match and the photos of the interior featured here show it exactly as it is. We love the uniqueness and don’t find it uncomfortable and no other reviews or feedback have complained about this. One man’s shabby is another woman’s chic. The white marble-topped dressers and bedside tables are coveted by many guests and the foxed ( antiqued ) mirrors are seriously ‘on trend’ at the moment. Maybe this hasn’t reached Watford yet. We review the cleaning brief regularly and appreciate the odd cobweb and microscopic chipped enamel may occasionally escape us. We would hope future guests may overlook this when the sun is shining on the glistening swimming pool, it’s 30 degrees and the birds are singing beautifully. Obviously, we offer a full refund if guests are unhappy and unable to stay , as there are many other rental homes and hotels the area. These guests declined this offer. we appreciate guests giving constructive feedback and will try our hardest to address any issues brought to our attention.

Our Stay at Casa Clara

  • 5 of 5

We were met by Sandra as agreed in Torrox and then we drove approximately 5 mins to Casa Clara. The large terrace and lovely pool were certainly an added bonus to the very nice and well equipped villa. Each night we went down to the town and eat at various restaurants all were excellent. Our week went much too quickly but we came home well relaxed.

A lovely and relaxing stay!

  • 4 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay at Casa Clara. It's a lovely house, and the pool made it very special. Very rural and rustic feel to it. A reasonable walk in to the town of Torrox, and then a short drive to stunning beaches (Maro being one of them).

The perfect house for a relaxing holiday.

  • 5 of 5

The setting on a hillside above Torrox allows for lovely views across the valley, down to the distant sea and up to the mountains.

The pool and wide terraces are perfect for relaxing in the sunshine for a whole day or as a welcome home after enjoying the nearby beaches and sightseeing.

We visited beaches atTorrox Costa, Nerja and Maro which were all different and worth a trip. The villages of Frigiliana and Competa are lovely to wander round. Torrox is a short walk down the hill and worth spending some time exploring the narrow passageways and town centre.

The house is clean and comfortable and the four of us had plenty of space to relax. We were met by Sandra who was helpful and efficient.

We would love to return!

Beautiful, relaxing, everything you need!

  • 5 of 5

Had a fantastic 10 days here in July. The house is very lovely with a relaxed feel but contains all you would need for a perfect holiday. The situation is beautifully private and quiet but not isolated. Beaches and shops close. The pool a godsend in the heat of summer. The flowers and pot plants and attention to detail made our stay all the more lovely with BBQ and alfresco eating and wine on the amazing terrace well into the night. We really didn't want to come back and considered claiming squatter's rights! (Only kidding) highly recommend- great communication and assistance from owner and her representative in Torrox, divine area, beautiful house and garden and Paco the gardener very friendly and sweet. Would love to revisit this lovely place

There are many leisure activities such as golf, horseriding, walking, snorkeling and scuba diving. During the year there are lots of feria (festivals) in different nearby towns and villages.Overlooking the Mediterranean, the 11th century village of Torrox is a typical white-washed village with many steep streets and pretty squares. Protected from the north winds by the Tejeda and Almijara mountains the average temperature sees little difference between winter and summer.
