About Alex Ballard

We're a youngish :0) family with a real love for the culture, food and way of life Italy has to offer. We are lucky enough to have built wonderful Italian friendships, who are now part of the family. With their help we have renovated a home to its true Pugliese style, whilst adding the little home comforts everybody needs for the perfect holiday. We're biased, but we really feel there is no better place to eat, drink, laugh and relax...

Alex Ballard purchased this villa in 2000

Why Alex Ballard chose Alberobello

After travels around the world, and our love for Thailand, on a holiday (quite by mistake) we ended up in Alberobello, Puglia. After just a few days we realised what a truly beautiful and unspoilt place we had found with incredibly friendly people, amazing food and wine, beautiful surroundings and quite simply the closest place we found the the warmth and love we'd found in our travels in Thailand. The people remain the same as bygone years, and after visits to other parts of Italy I maintain this area holds on to it's true Italian heritage, free from over tourism and 'kiss me quick' attitudes.

Puglia is every bit what Italy should be and with the family values, the delightful sounds of the italian language and rural beginnings it really is home from home for our family.

What makes this villa unique

We were lucky enough to find this unspoilt area before it was named the new Tuscany. We were one of the first to buy in the area, so had our choice of properties, after viewing practically all available! and feel we have struck the right balance of beautiful quiet countryside whilst having easy access to the famous Alberobello. When we bought, there were no airports, no English menus and it really felt quite remote. Whilst the airports have now arrived (along with the helpful English menus) the place remains true to its character and hasn't (and I feel will not) allowed it to be changed by the new visitors who can't help but be romanced by it's beauty. Lonely Planet guides visited our Trullo (the editors father also an architect) and they commented on how true the renovation is to Puglia.

The Trullo has been a great place to explore the area and relax in the evenings. It has been fun to stay in and we appreciated having the pool and outdoor area. We have had a great week at Trullo Famiglia relaxing by the pool most afternoons. In the mornings we visited local towns, Alberobello, Locorotondo and Martina Franca. We loved the deli in Alberobello by the covered market, where we also picked up fresh fish. The Craft Family 24-31 August 2013 Bath, Truro, Oxford

We have had a wonderful week in this beautiful Trullo – Well done Alex and family for renovating so well and providing a perfect place to stay.

We spent most of our week by the pool and lounging around doing little – the speakiers in the garden were fantastic!!!We did venture into Alberobello twice (one on Thursday, Market day which was very interesting). We loved the Trulli zone and wandering around the streets and the locals were so friendly and helpful. We are leaving the Trullo refreshed after doing very little for a week. Thanks for a great place to stay in a great location. Fiona, Tony and Kids.17-24 August 2013

Trulli Stunning! One of our best holidays yet, and we’ve had a few!

Alberobello, Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Ostuni and a whole host of out-of-the-way-towns and villages. Those we visited always had there own particular charm. Food everywhere has never been less than very, very good; we’ve had fantastic meals.Whether we were out exploring the area or just chilling out by the pool, this is the perfect place to kick back and relax… We’ll be back.

We've had a gorgeous, relaxing & very hot week here. It's our third time to the area but the first to this trullo and we've loved it! We thought the villa was just perfect, very well equipped & had everything we needed

for a perfect holiday. The outdoor speakers were a great hit, especially with a teenager and two early-20s! Sean is a chef & made some fantastic meals for us in the kitchen with all the local, cheap produce.

Special interest holidays:

Romance and Italy go hand in hand and we have embraced that with our Honeymoon Package. Champagne, flowers, chocolates, fresh fruits, meats, cheeses and breads are just some of the luxuries awaiting you on arrival.

Christmas: The Trullo will be decorated, making your arrival extra special. Take your presents from under the tree on Christmas day and open them to the crackling sound of the Wood burner.

Easter: Easter Eggs and chocolate can be arranged to be at the Trullo on arrival. Imagine your children’s faces as they are greeted with chocolates on their bed, or an Easter egg hunt to start their holiday.

Special Requests: We will always try and accommodate any special requirements you may have. Be it a surprise for a loved one, Birthday decorations and cake or a special anniversary, the ideas are yours. Contact us with your requirements and we will be more than happy to help.

Short Breaks: We offer Weekend/Short breaks, depending on our booking availability.

Coast/Beach:

The transparent sea is never too far away, bordering the long stiletto heel with white sandy beaches and rocky coves. The land itself is only 30km wide making it easy to explore both coastlines of the Ionian and the Adriatic Oceans. The bigger beaches are easiest to find, dotted along both coastlines, but dig a little deeper along the coastal road and you will discover many little secluded coves and beaches. See our website for more details.

Travel:

It is easily accessible from either of the two airports (Bari & Brindisi). The journey to the Trullo is very easy with one motorway, one turn off onto a smaller (main) road and a very easy route to the house from Alberobello. With the ring road actually bypassing the town. The journey takes around 45 mins to an hour and is stress free. Another option is via Naples. See our website for extensive directions, maps, car hire and airline links.

Distances:

There are many towns and villages to visit in and around the Trullo. A simple 10 mins cycle ride or 5 mins in the car will take you into Alberobello, the capital town of the Trulli, another 10 mins car journey and you can reach Locorotondo, Martina Franca and many more. See our website for a detailed view.

Further Details:

Settled in the heel of Italy surrounded by both the Ionian and Adriatic seas, in a vast countryside filled with giant knotted olive trees and lush vineyards you will discover a magical sun-washed town made up of light-coloured stone houses which throw off a bright white glow reminiscent of the Greek islands. The whole town, shaped like little beehives has worthily earned its World Heritage site status from UNESCO and guarantees that the pace is both slow and tranquil. Alberobello and its’ surrounding area remain true to the country’s romantic heritage and allow you to ‘Trulli’ experience the essence of the real Italy. Puglia is fascinating and a far cry from the hustle and bustle of the Northern Italian cities. The area is a holiday destination for Italians themselves, known to Rome’s radical chic as a quirky summer playground with a rich tradition of glorious food, wine, energizing folk music and art-filled cities. It boasts Italy’s cleanest coastline and has some of the finest beaches in the Mediterranean. The terrain is flat, making it easy to explore, priding itself with beautiful rolling plains in a variety of luminous greens, valleys blanketed with colourful wildflowers, acres of olive groves dating back hundreds of years (actually producing 2 thirds of all the olive oil in Italy) and lush vineyards making some of the best wine you will taste. Because the land is so unspoilt by tourism and enjoys a simple way of life, it is visited by an array of exotic birds and animals. Wild boar, roe and fallow deer, wild cats and eagle owls are amongst some of the species happily making the protected woodlands of Puglia their home. Described in the last year by many publications, broadsheets, TV programmes and food critics as the ‘New Tuscany’; now is the time to visit…

Perfection!

  • 5 of 5

Wow,! We went for our familymoon (5 of us) and I had searched for a property which would be perfect for our special event and I couldn't be happier with my choice. From the moment I touched base with Alex (the owner) I knew it was going to be just right.

Alex was quick to respond to emails at all times, he was efficient and friendly and gave loads of tips to make our holiday perfect.

The trullo is set in beautiful surroundings, the pool is sublime - we were there in a heatwave (43 degrees) so it was very welcome and clean! There was so much space outside for our 3 children to set up dens, hideout and have fun. Alex and family have left lots of equipment to keep them entertained too.

The trullo was exactly as I expected - just beautiful. There was plenty of space for us all. The roof terrace was amazing and the perfect spot to watch the thunderstorm we had (it was a long way away at the time).

The security of the place was spot on too - we felt safe at all times.

The wildlife was fabulous too - we had a fox by the pool, more lizards than we could count and even scorpions! Don't let that put you off as they aren't venomous and were actually a lot of fun - we had our own scorpion catching box and we researched them too! The children, aged 4, 7, 9, were catching them by the end of the fortnight!

I really didn't want to return to England and could have stayed in this beautiful place forever! Thank you, Alex for the bottle of celebratory fizz on arrival too. It was enjoyed and appreciated. I can bot recommend this place highly enough.

Grown up family break

  • 5 of 5

Chasing the better weather at end of year. 6 adults looking for a chilled out break but with things to do and places to visit. Alberobello ticks all the boxes. Very central for the area and easy to get to lots of little towns to visit for coffee and lunches. Food and wine is sublime and cheap and easy to get a terrific taste of the region. The Trullo that Alex offers is fabulous. Can't fault anything. Information and lead up to going was perfect. Car hire easy, directions faultless, location amazing, pool awesome, bikes handy. Very comfortable and well equipped villa. Didn't want for anything. Highly recommended and would definitely do it again! Thank you Alex.

Lovely peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

We were a family group of 3 adults and 1 teenager in search of sunshine, peace and relaxation in an area of Italy we had not previously explored.

This property is conveniently situated just outside Alberobello , about an hour from Bari airport . It is in a beautiful location and the owner, Alex, has obviously put in a huge amount of work to create a lovely place to stay, but still in an authentic trullo setting. He could not have been more helpful in terms of information pre-trip, and also advice and tips for places and restaurants to visit during our stay.

The trullo could comfortably accommodate a couple more younger visitors although we felt might prove a bit more cramped for more adults staying . It is well equipped and the outdoor facilities around the pool and gazebo area were excellent - there are even bikes available for exploring the beautiful surroundings.

All in all an excellent holiday destination and an extremely helpful owner. Thank you

Trulli Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

An absolutely beautiful Trullo in an idyllic and peaceful setting amongst the olive groves. We travelled as a family with two teenagers and it ticked every box for all of us.

Very well equipped Trullo, Alex, Maria and Chris the pool man were very helpful and responsive to any queries both before and during our stay.

We enjoyed lazy days by the lovely large pool or exploring the coastline and it's villages.

In the evenings we either bbq'd or enjoyed visiting the local towns, highlights included Martina Franca, Polignano a Mare, Alborebello, Ostuni, Locorotundo and slightly further afield Lecce.

During our holiday we celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary and Alex arranged a special menu for us at the Paradiso di Puglia, where we experienced fantastic hospitality and food (we had also visited the week before and received the same welcome)

All in all would highly recommend for a perfect holiday in an unspoilt and welcoming beautiful area.

Fantastic Trullo - Highly Recommend

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week at the end of May in this trullo and it was fantastic. It is exactly as described and more. Working with Alex was great. He is very responsive and helpful. The trullo itself is so unique and has everything one would need for an exceptional stay. The outdoor setting was beautiful. We enjoyed a few nights on the rooftop with our local wine. Indoor the rooms are well appointed and all the special custom touches are superb. If you are over 6 foot you just need to watch you head in a few areas ;-) We also enjoyed eating at the Paradiso di Puglia and it's definitely worth ordering the "house specials" although you will gain a few pounds if you do. We ended up touring a lot of the local towns and they were all so wonderful. Our favorite was Monopoli. We spent one day at the beach outside of Monopoli in a private beach club from there we showered and headed into the walled town of Monopoli and it was our favorite day of the trip. We also loved touring the Albea winery. The wines are delicious and the owners are even better. All in all I couldn't recommend more a stay at this trullo in Alberobello. I would however recommend getting a good GPS system with local maps. That way you can find all the neat places in the area without fear of getting lost. We took this approach and it worked out beautifully.

Every detail covered!

  • 5 of 5

Every detail of a luxurious and tranquil stay has been poured over and considered by the owners. A hammock for two, bikes to collect the fresh bread from Alberbello for breakfast, a proper coffee machine, and even Sky TV (not that it was needed). Highly recommended!
