About the property

El Molino de la Balsiña - 4 bedroomed stone house on river

El Molino de la Balsiña is an ancient watermill and stone dwelling, fully restored to a high specification, set in the rolling hills of Galicia and on the banks of the Arnego river with gardens and mile after mile of countryside. Lying at the end of a track a few km from a country road and within its own finca, it is south facing and sits in a secluded wooded valley visited only by the occasional fisherman. Outside there is a covered barbecue area and a vine shaded terrace, ideal for dining during the day. For sun-bathing there is a large wooden deck with a wonderful view of the river which later becomes the perfect place for an evening drink to catch the last rays of the setting sun.

The terraced gardens front the river with the original mill building still containing the four mill stones. There are steps from the lower terrace into the river for swimming in front of the house. Adjacent to the Mill is a wooden footbridge over the Arnego by which you can reach the mill pool upstream, where the water is warmer and calmer, and explore both river banks.

The property sleeps a maximum of 8 people – with 2 bedrooms in each of the two stone buildings which are linked by a stone patio. The main house (Miller's house) has 2 bedrooms, store, bathroom, galleried area, kitchen, utility with toilet, dining room and cosy sitting room. The smaller Weaver's cottage has 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. The property is only ever let with sole occupancy, though groups of up to 4 persons can rent at a discount of 10% with use of the Miller's house only.

The river is unfenced so the property is not suitable for those with small children.

About Kate Turnbull

We are a family of five living in rural North Yorkshire - we know how much we look forward to holidays and how important the memories are and hope that others will enjoy this very special place as much as we do.

Kate Turnbull purchased this house in 2008

Why Kate Turnbull chose Vila de Cruces

As a family we rented the Mill twice and all fell for its unique charm, so when we tried to book it again and found it was for sale, we talked of fate and dreams ... and bought it.

What makes this house unique

We have found no better escape from our busy lives than spending time at the Mill - plenty to see and do if you wish, though lazy afternoons on the river, reading in the hammocks, sun-bathing on the wooden deck, meals cooked and eaten outside, and the chance to unwind, mean many people barely stray further than the valley. The stone buildings reflect the warmth and its history and the sound of the river is the last thing you hear at night and the first in the morning.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"The Mill is such a hidden treasure - a perfect retreat for relaxation"

Mrs TT Aug 09

"It almost goes without saying how beautiful a place this is: the house is designed and fitted perfectly, and the sounds and sights of the river and local wildlife are the perfect backdrop"

Mr GJ June 10

"We have had a wonderful week in this special peaceful place - we swam, read, played boules and got to know the lizards"

Mr SN July 10

"We've had an amazing relaxing holiday. This place is gorgeous (the difference between our hectic lives in London and life at the Mill is such a contrast). We have really appreciated time together swimming both in the river and the lake and having both to ourselves, cooking delicious Gallegan fare and chilling outside under the vine canopy.... We thought the general standard and quality of the accommodation was amongst the highest we have come across (and we have rented lots of country houses in France, Spain and Portugal)

Picture Perfect Idyllic Place to Relax...Magical

The Mill was everything you could wish for, very well equipped with all your needs catered for in the most "beautiful surroundings". Many tracks to walk through, forest & fauna, listen and watch for the wildlife, and watch the stars @ night with a good glass of local wine... fab...!! (Local bodega very helpful..) If you want to take a break from the tranquility there are many places to visit, local people were very friendly, eager to chat and help. Plenty of bars and restaurants not to far away, although you do need to drive, no worries, whilst driving we came across some great restaurants in the middle of no-where..!! Loved every minute of it, and still talking about it..!!!

A beautiful tranquil setting

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at The Mill in August 2017. It caught our attention as it seemed to be a real "get away from it" holiday and it was!

The house itself is so beautiful and you can tell that real care and attention has gone into every detail. It is more of a home than a holiday rental. The kitchen is very well equipped and there is everything you might need to really enjoy your stay.

We swam in the river every day - the children loved jumping off the rocks from the garden into the water and wading upstream to sunbathe on rocks. The setting is peaceful and you can literally go a whole day without seeing a soul!

There are lovely tracks for running and we also enjoyed some great cycle rides (beware it's hilly, but we like that!).

We ate all our meals outside under the vines.

We were met in a local town and shown to the property so we didn't get lost which was a nice touch. We also loved that this is not a busy tourist area, and so we were forced to practice our Spanish in local shops and bars!!

Just perfect. Bucolic paradise.

We bought a road atlas to navigate from the airport. We had deliberately left our guidebooks at home. This part of the world is thankfully not in the guidebooks. We were met by Karen, the friendly and helpful housekeeper in one of the bars in Vila de Cruces. She escorted us to The Mill and showed us what was what.

It is an elegant, spacious, comfortable and well equipped house in a glorious secluded location with a river to jump into from the garden, and some exquisite wild swimming in warm waters a short walk downstream.

We lounged under the vine-covered logia, watched the comical green lizards, cooked on the BBQ and made full use of the excellent kitchen. Every meal was eaten outside. The children (14,12,9) decided to sleep in the separate annexe. Sometimes, when not in the river, they persuaded us to get up and play badminton on the lawn. An occasional fisherman wondered by, but otherwise the only sound was that of the crickets and cicadas.

We made some low-key exploratory forays to Santiago, Lugo, and Pontevedra. All well worth a visit for the purposes of random wondering and really good cheap food. We did not see a single British tourist outside Santiago in 2 weeks. Lovely countryside and good, almost empty roads.

Time slowed down. Food tasted better. The children woke up late. It was great.

We found that the small town of Vila de Cruces, a 10 minute drive up the track, seems to operate under the the same special time dilation that affected us at The Mill. Cars drive slowly. There is no hurry in any of the shops or the post office. Everyone appears completely content with this fact. Excellent butchers, bread, fish etc, who speak no English or Welsh, but who can understand you anyway. There are some friendly bars with wifi and cold beer. Once a fortnight there is a market where a lot of people gather to eat boiled octopus.

If you want a luxury executive holiday with a super highspeed multimedia office away from home, activities organised from dawn to dusk with a creche for the nippers, a tiki bar and a really bangin' club scene, then this place is really not for you.

We stayed for 2 weeks and we left reluctantly.

The Mill and Weaver's cottage are a stunning holiday location, loads of space, privacy and every facility you could wish for for a relaxing stay. The main house and cottage have thick stone walls and tiled floors, beamed ceilings and solid old wooden doors. Nice and cool on a hot day, snug and cosy when it's raining! We didn't miss TV/internet at all, though took laptop for watching DVDs. We had trips to Santiago, Lugo and out to the coast - a long drive but the beach at Carnota was fabulous! The mill is quite remote, down a very rough stony track. The local area is not at all 'touristy', mainly small farms and rolling hills. It is not a rich or glamorous part of Spain, but the people we met were all friendly and kind, in spite of our complete lack of Spanish. The best memories of the holiday are of being around the mill itself - lazy meals under the vine terrace with plenty of local fruit & wine, splashing about in the river, watching the resident lizards. The river when we were there was deep and fast-flowing, not good for small children or non-swimmers. Perhaps it would be gentler after a dry spell of weather. Younger children could have lots of fun paddling around the edges but would need supervision. However our group had a great time in and around the river and the mill pool.

WOW !!!

  • 5 of 5

If you like your cottages to be away from everyone else , with beautiful countryside , wooded walks and a swimming river to die for this is the one for you ! I can highly recommend this lovely mill cottage for charm, cleanliness and modern facilities. Everything is finished to a high standard and you feel at home immediately. We had a fantastic relaxing holiday with sandy beaches within a 1.5 hours drive or just stay at the mill and swim / float on the river ! We have been to many cottages over the years and this rates at the top for relaxation, facilities ( walk in shower , new bathrooms, kitchen etc etc) . The guest book was full of comments about how everyone enjoyed their time at the mill. In terms of activities , you are limited to more cultural days in the towns, walks ( canoeing on lakes not rivers ) or nice beaches. There are no theme parks and you need to be a family who likes to make their own entertainment rather than have it laid on a plate, but for us that was ideal. No hesitation in 5 stars.
